One of the most important tools for successful content creators is a camera. The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is one of the most versatile cameras in the market, producing impressive 4K video and amazing photographs in a compact design. One of the key aspects of the new G5x Mark II is the compact body which makes it easy for the content creators to grab and go without worrying for lens and a separate bag for the camera. The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is beautifully crafted and feels premium. The rubber on the grip is nice and sticky, and textured paint helps keep the camera-less slippery and more secure in your hand.
In terms of ports, the G5 X Mark II comes with a USB-C connector and a micro HDMI port. However, it lacks the microphone port making it less valuable for content creators who prefer separate high-performance mic with the camera. One of the most impressive features is the G5X II can charge over USB, though you may find you’ll need a high rated powerful charger to quickly charge the battery. It also comes with a separate charger which can charge the battery externally. The control layout is similar to what we found on most of the Canon based compact cameras. The shutter button has a good half-and-full-press feel and is surrounded by a zoom toggle. The exposure compensation and mode dials have just the right amount of resistance. There is a separate video record button which is handy when we quickly want to record a video. One of the key design elements of the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II has to be its three-inch adjustable touch LCD, which can be flipped 45 degrees down or 180 degrees up to face its user. The display is very bright, boasting a resolution of 1.04 million dots and features a touchscreen. The touchscreen interface is similar to Canon existing interface, polished and responsive. You can tap to move your focus point or initiate tracking. The touchscreen can also be used to navigate the menus and images in playback.
Talking about performance, the G5x Mark II has a 20-megapixel sensor, combined with the Digic 7 image processor. The lens on the Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II boasts a nine-blade iris diaphragm that allows for beautifully out-of-focus backgrounds and isolated subjects that are typically seen with DSLR lenses. The camera creates sharp and usable images. It does struggle sharpness in the low light environment and it does lose sharpness. Video quality is good, with good colour reproduction, reliable exposure and good focus. Image stabilization helps keep the video steady and stable and there are options to enhance the Dynamic stabilization.
The Canon Powershot G5 X Mark II is a stylish compact camera which will be perfect for taking snaps of the family. We loved that when using auto mode, the camera screen displays and the EVF shows exactly the type of photo you’re taking. Sadly, there are some downsides. Photos in low light were particularly disappointing, often lack sharpness. However, the controls are well thought-out, the touchscreen is excellent and the pop-up EVF is especially handy for daylight shooting.
