Dash Cams – Set It and Forget It – Not so much

Dash cams have become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to their aggressive pricing and their ability to capture and record accidents and unexpected events on our road journeys. Infact, dash cam footage saved us a ton of aggravation in resolving a he-said-she-said dispute with the insurance company of the redlight-runner who totalled our car. However, a recent road incident and our dash cam’s failure to capture video documenting the event, alerted us to the widespread misconception that dash cams are ‘set it and forget it’ devices. In this article, we’ll describe the dash cam’s failure and give you some helpful tips for dash cam setup and maintenance, so your dash cam will continue to be functional and you can count on it to document the events it was purchased to capture.

Setup

Ensuring a proper setup is pivotal. Check that your dash cam is positioned so that it doesn’t obstruct your vision, it is securely fastened to the windshield (usually with a rubber suction cup) and properly positioned to capture the desired viewing perspective.  Most dash cams have a viewfinder to help establish the viewing area. Next, check that the correct date and time are configured – this will be critical to document when an incident occurred. Refer to your owners manual to find an appropriately sized high-endurance memory card (usually an SD card) and format the card with the recommended compliant filesystem. Then ensure video recording options are configured with high resolution and loop recording is configured. Check whether your dashcam supports locked video clips (meaning that designated video files will not automatically be deleted when the dashcam deems an incident has occurred) and determine whether you want file locking on or off.

Checkups

Regularly check the positioning of your dash cam and clean the camera lens. It is important to periodically remove your memory card from the dashcam and plug it into a computer to validate the dashcam capture angle, the integrity of the memory card and which clips are locked and not automatically overwritten (are new recordings happening?) so there is plenty of memory space to capture new video.

Our Failure Mode

Our dash cam automatically locks (meaning will not automatically delete) footage that it thinks is important, which seems to mostly be events caught while the car is off. None of these supposedly important clips were important to us. Gradually over time, the number of these locked files grew to the point where there was not much space to record new videos. By the time we returned home after the road incident, the footage that documented the incident we needed was overwritten. Had we ensured a proper initial setup and performed routine checkups, we would not have lost this critical evidentiary video. Fortunately, we lucked out that our passenger used her cell phone to record the incident in addition to what we had hoped we would find on the dash cam, so we were able to establish fault with the cell phone video and photos. Often there is no passenger to depend on to document things when an incident occurs.

Dash cams can be incredibly useful tools for protecting yourself on the road, but they require regular attention and maintenance in order to work effectively. By staying informed about the features and settings of your dash cam, periodically checking the memory card, and being vigilant about potential malfunctions, you can ensure that your dash cam is always ready to capture important footage when you need it most.

First Look – Exploring the Power of Nikon Z8

Finally, Nikon Z8: A camera that’s been a long time coming, igniting the imaginations of passionate photographers worldwide. For those enchanted by the allure of gear-talk, the question lingers: Should this marvel have graced us with its presence years ago? Yet, there exists a tribe of photographers untouched by the grip of Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS), patiently awaiting the arrival of the Nikon Z8, their holy grail.

Nikon reveals that it is a compact rendition of their illustrious, multi-award-winning Z9 camera, aptly named the “Baby Z9.” While the opinions of these loyal enthusiasts hold immense significance for the Nikon Z8’s triumph, detractors from rival brands will inevitably emerge, casting their shadows upon its path. The mirrorless Baby Z9 camera is out for sale and is now available for pre-order.

First Impressions

Complicated emotions stir within the heart of the beholder contemplating the Nikon Z8, for it is a camera that evokes both elation and reservation. The compact marvel encompasses the vast capabilities of its larger sibling, the Nikon Z9. Finally, Nikon unveils a contender to rival the Sony Alpha 1 and the Canon EOS R5 with earnest intent. However, in the grand tapestry of the photography market, this offering fails to exude an aura of exceptionalism.

Some might argue that this camera is, in essence, already over a year old. Furthermore, it finds itself challenged by a three-year-old counterpart and another born merely two years prior. Nonetheless, Nikon endeavours to traverse uncharted realms by boldly eliminating the mechanical shutter, a feat previously observed solely within the domain of Sigma, a brand whose cameras elicit limited regard.

Build Quality

The Nikon Z8 stands tall, surpassing the Leica SL2s, Canon EOS R5, Panasonic Lumix S5 II, and the Sony a7r III in stature. It proudly claims the title of the loftiest mirrorless marvel bereft of an integrated vertical grip. In this grand theatre of mirrorless marvels, the Nikon Z8 assumes the mantle of one of the largest contenders. Brace yourself for your camera bag configuration, which may necessitate a reverential transformation.

Ease of USE

Amongst the vast array of Nikon cameras he has wielded, the illustrious Nikon Z8 emerges as an unparalleled titan, enchanting the senses with its impeccably smooth touchscreen menu. With a mere flick of a finger, one glides effortlessly through its digital realm, while navigation unveils itself as a realm of the utmost simplicity. Yet, within this harmonious symphony, unmistakable echoes of Nikon’s indomitable spirit resound.

The lenses, graceful in their turning; the button layout, a testament to familiarity; and the myriad configurable buttons that adorn this marvel all bear the distinctive hallmark of the Nikon lineage. Even to the uninitiated, fear not, for with the passage of time, this enigmatic entity shall reveal its secrets, unravelling a captivating dance between mind and machine, wherein understanding takes root with ease.

The long-awaited summer season is upon us, and it’s time to gear up for your next outdoor adventure. Whether you’re planning a thrilling mountain biking expedition or an underwater scuba diving excursion, capturing the perfect shot is essential to reliving the moment. In a world where action cameras are as ubiquitous as sunscreen, it can be daunting to choose the right one. Fear not, adventurers! We’ve scoured the market and compiled a list of the top 5 action cameras to make your summer escapades unforgettable. So, grab your helmets, tighten your straps, and get ready to capture your most epic moments yet.

GoPro HERO 11 Black

The GoPro HERO11 Black is a significant upgrade with best-in-class stabilisation and a versatile, almost square sensor. The camera shoots great-looking videos and has new modes like light painting. The standout feature is its 8:7 aspect ratio, allowing content creators to create new clips from a single video. The camera can shoot in 5.3K at 60fps, 4K at 120fps, and 2.7K at 240fps and capture 27MP stills from 5.3K video. Despite no significant improvement in lowlight performance, the HERO11 Black’s simplified interface and enhanced horizon levelling make it appealing to social media enthusiasts.

Insta360 One RS

Get the best of both worlds with Insta360’s One RS. The camera comes with three interchangeable lenses: a 4K mod, a dual-lens 360-degree camera, and a Leica lens with a 1-inch sensor that captures 5K video. The 4K mod and 360 mod pairing offer the best value, while the Leica 1-inch mod delivers top-notch video quality. The updated Insta360 One RS shoots 5.2K video with its improved 4K mod and processor, which features a motion-smoothing algorithm. Plus, firmware updates continuously enhance its features, making it a wise investment.

AKASO Brave 7 LE

Looking for a

GoPro alternative that won’t hurt your wallet? The AKASO Brave 7 LE is an excellent option. This affordable camera has an IPX7 rating and feels sturdy. It can endure submersion in 1m of water for 30 minutes, but you’ll need a protective case for more comprehensive underwater adventures. The Brave 7 LE features a front screen for vlogging and decent stabilisation, albeit with a 1.6x crop. Although it maxes out at 30 fps in 4k, it can still record 120 fps slow-motion footage in 1080p. Overall, it’s an excellent action cam for the price.

DJI’s Osmo Action 3

DJI’s Osmo Action 3 combines the form factor of the original with the magnetic clip system of the second. Its GoPro-like design features dual touch screens and a magnetic quick-clip system, making it a solid alternative to GoPro. With great battery life and excellent video stabilisation, the Osmo Action 3 is cheaper than GoPro, making it a compelling option. However, GoPro Hero 10 and 11 have better video resolution, with the Osmo Action 3 maxing out at 4K and 12-megapixel stills, compared to the Hero 11’s 5.3K stabilised video and 26-megapixel stills. Nevertheless, at 30k, the Osmo Action 3 is an excellent value for money.

DJI Pocket 2

The DJI Pocket 2 may not fit the traditional definition of an action camera, but its built-in gimbal makes it stand out. This pocket camera stabilises footage smoothly and effectively across three axes, with customisable settings like horizon lock and tilt prevention. Additionally, it has an active tracking mode that can lock onto subjects and follow them. While lacking some frame rate options, the camera’s 1/1.7-inch sensor provides superior video quality and low-light performance compared to most action cameras. It’s an excellent option for capturing handheld, stabilised video without carrying additional gear.

Panasonic Lumix S5II Review – Mighty Good

The Panasonic Lumix S series was introduced in India back in 2019 and quickly emerged to become one of the premier camera series in the country. The latest variant in the S series is the Panasonic Lumix S5II which adds a new 24MP CMOS sensor featuring phase detection autofocus and many other exciting features. However, does this new addition to the Lumix series hold up to the S series legacy? To put it simply, YES! Let’s take a deep dive into the latest offering by Panasonic –

Design and Features

The DSLR-style design of the S5II will remind you of several other digital cameras in the market though it is a little bulkier. The viewfinder bump has been given a size bump to accommodate a cooling system that is a step in the right direction. The build quality feels premium, and the camera can feel hefty in the hands, but the textured material and a good grip ensure its security in the user’s hands. The overall handling of the device is excellent, thanks to the balance struck between weight and dynamics. It features a bright screen that can be turned around almost in every direction (unless you’re using the HDMI or USB-C ports) It features a revamped OLED viewfinder this time around, which is a treat to capture photos and videos with.
The extra hump on the camera houses a new heat management system that allows users to record long 4K videos at a stretch. A little hump to the camera in exchange for uninterrupted video shooting is not big of a sacrifice, in my opinion. Battery life is passable on the S5II, and nothing out of the ordinary. The full-fledged connectivity options with HDMI, USB-C and a dedicated mic, along with headphones and remote shutter release sockets, make the user’s life easier. The dual SD card slot took me by surprise!

Performance

The Lumix S5II features the latest hybrid autofocus setup that is a noticeable upgrade over the previous Panasonic shooters. The device sports phase detection and contrast detection, which allows it to easily detect both animals and human subjects and also track them automatically. The handheld shooting experience with the S5II is impressive as the new in-camera Active I.S. setup allows users to pan and tilt clips easily. There are an array of options for users to choose from as the S5II can shoot in MP4 and MOV format at 10-bit and 8-bit quality ranging from Full HD to 8K resolutions. The frame rate options here range from 24fps to 180fps with native ISO of 640 and 4000. In conclusion, the S5II is capable of shooting in all lighting conditions. The still image quality does not disappoint either, as it is capable of producing vivid and punchy shots. However, the main attraction of the Panasonic Lumix S5II has to be its Real Time LUTs feature. This allows users to enable real-time colour grading on photos and videos within the camera by applying LUT (look-up-table) saved in the SD memory card.

Verdict

The Panasonic Lumix S5II is an all-rounder capable of performing well in a range of lighting conditions, if not all of them. The build quality of this camera feels premium in hand, and its performance solidifies it as one of the best cameras around right now.
