Samsung Galaxy M55 5G Review: Respectable Mid-Ranger

Samsung has a set to capture the relative mid-budget segment market with M-series. The Samsung Galaxy M55 stands as a testament to Samsung’s commitment to innovation and meeting the demands of its diverse consumer base. Positioned within the mid-range segment, the Galaxy M55 boasts a fusion of performance, style, and affordability.

BUILD & DESIGN

Samsung has chosen a sleek and modern design language for the Galaxy M55, featuring clean lines and a minimalistic approach. The device has a slim profile with gently curved edges, providing a comfortable grip and a premium feel in hand. It is made of a combination of glass and plastic, making it lightweight yet durable. The camera module is seamlessly integrated into the rear panel, maintaining the samsung aesthetics. Despite being a mid-range phone, Samsung has maintained its reputation for delivering phones with solid build quality. The slim profile and curved edges enhance grip, reducing the likelihood of accidental slips. The Galaxy M55 feels sturdy and well-constructed, with no creaks or flexing observed during handling. The materials used offer a good balance between aesthetics and durability, ensuring that the phone can withstand daily use.

The placement of physical buttons are easy to reach. The size and weight of the phone are well-balanced, making it suitable for extended periods of use without causing hand fatigue. Whether browsing the web, streaming media, or engaging in productivity tasks, the Galaxy M55 offers a pleasant ergonomic experience. The slim bezels and notch design maximize screen real estate while maintaining a modern aesthetic. Additionally, features such as an on-screen fingerprint sensor and facial recognition further streamline the user experience, offering convenient and secure authentication methods.

PERFORMANCE

The Galaxy M55 is a mid-range smartphone positioned to offer a balance between performance, features, and affordability. It features a sleek and modern design with a sturdy build quality. Its ergonomic design makes it comfortable to hold and use.

The device boasts a vibrant and immersive display, with a 6.7-inch SuperAMOLED+ and 1080×2400 pixels capable of running up to 120Hz. Colours are vivid, and viewing angles are excellent, making it suitable for multimedia consumption and gaming. Overall, Samsung didn’t compromise on visual quality and offered the best display for a mid-range smartphone.

Surprisingly, the Galaxy M55 packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset instead of its in-house silicon Exynos. It also comes with a maximum of 12GB RAM; the Galaxy M55 delivers smooth and responsive performance in day-to-day tasks such as web browsing, social media, and productivity apps. Multitasking is handled well, with no minimal lag or slowdowns. Running on Samsung’s One UI 6.1, the Galaxy M55 offers a user-friendly interface with many features and customization options. Like other similar mid-range devices, even Galaxy M55 shipped with multiple unwanted pre-installed apps.

The gaming experience on a Galaxy M55 is decent, thanks to the Adreno 644 GPU graphics processor. When playing casual games, the device can maintain high frame rates without overheating. However, when it comes to more demanding titles like BGMI and Call of Duty, the performance is average, with an occasional dip in frame rates.

The Galaxy M55 is a smartphone with impressive battery life. It comes equipped with a powerful 5000 mAh battery, lasting more than a day even with moderate usage on a single charge. I recently tested the phone’s battery life by watching an entire 2-hour 4K movie, and I was pleasantly surprised to observe that the phone only drained 30% of its battery. Considering the power-hungry nature of 4K videos and the movie’s length, this is an excellent result.

CAMERA

The Samsung Galaxy M55 features a triple-camera system on the back, led by a 50-megapixel primary sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS). In daylight, the 50-megapixel primary sensor captures good detail and acceptable colour accuracy, producing sharp and vivid photos well-suited for sharing on social media or taking casual snapshots. The OIS also helps in taking steady images. However, the M55 struggles in low-light conditions, as photos can appear noisy with noticeable grain, and details get lost in darker areas.

The 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor provides a broader perspective for capturing landscapes or group photos in tight spaces. It performs well in well-lit environments but expects some drop in quality compared to the primary sensor.

After taking many photos, I noticed that the camera software over-processes photos, leading to slightly unnatural-looking colours. While this is pleasing to the eye for casual users, photography enthusiasts prefer more control over the final image.

This device also has a 2-megapixel macro sensor, which is quite common in its price range. While it can capture decent close-up shots, it may not deliver exceptional detail, given its limited resolution. Nonetheless, the macro sensor can be useful for day-to-day photography, especially if you’re looking to capture images of small objects or details up close.

If you like taking selfies, you will be pleased to know that the device features a top-of-the-line 50-megapixel front-facing camera. This camera takes sharp, high-resolution photos, making it an excellent choice for video calls or close-up portraits.

VERDICT

The Galaxy M55 is an all-around phone that focuses on providing the essentials. If you prefer a reputable brand with stunning display, extended battery life, efficient performance, and software support at a reasonable price, the M55 is an excellent option. However, if you prioritize having the best camera in this price range, there are other alternatives available.

Samsung Presented Bespoke Appliances powered by AI

Samsung recently held a showcase event at their BKC store in which they presented their Bespoke appliances that are powered by AI. These appliances offer a glimpse into the future of connected and sustainable homes. Samsung is aiming to provide customers with appliances that are so smart that they can exceed their expectations. The latest appliances from Samsung, equipped with Bespoke AI, can be easily managed using the SmartThings application, which is available on Samsung devices as well as other smartphones. This seamless connectivity provides customers with convenient home management with easy-to-access controls.

“We are introducing Bespoke AI, our next big innovation in home appliances which will ensure smarter living for Indian homes and reduce energy consumption, contributing to a greener planet. With our Bespoke AI-powered home appliances, consumers will be able to customise their choices, get easy controls for elders and kids, and get seamless diagnosis for their home appliances. With the transformative power of AI, we are confident that Bespoke AI will strengthen our leadership in the digital appliances market in India,” said JB Park, President & CEO, Samsung Southwest Asia.

Bespoke AI not only makes appliances smart but also helps increase their longevity and sustainability. With the SmartThings App, users can get notified when it is time to replace their refrigerator’s water filter or air conditioner’s filter. By introducing AI, Samsung aims to reduce the time required for managing these appliances.

“With AI, appliances can now be smarter, and help reduce users’ time and energy spent on home chores. Through enhanced connectivity and AI capabilities, these appliances take the consumer experience to the next level by revolutionizing the smart home experience. With AI appliances, our objective is to further strengthen our premium portfolio and increase our share in the premium appliances segment,” said Saurabh Baishakhia, Senior Director, Digital Appliances, Samsung India.

Samsung’s AI-powered Bespoke appliances, including Refrigerator, Air Conditioner, Microwave, and Washing Machine, are now available in India.

Refrigerator: The Samsung Refrigerator is equipped with an AI vision camera that can automatically recognize up to 33 food items initially, and more items will be added in the future. The number of items that the camera can identify will increase over time based on the user’s stored items. The refrigerator features a large touchscreen display that suggests recipes for lunch or dinner based on the food available.

With its smart food management system, users can easily track the expiry dates of specific food items in the refrigerator. Additionally, the single wide-angle camera offers a wider view, capturing not only the refrigerator shelves but also the door bins, providing a “View Inside” the refrigerator from anywhere at any time.

Air Conditioner: Samsung Air Conditioners allow users to remotely cool their homes using AI Geo fencing. The SmartThings application enables users to set commands, and when they are within a specified range or moving away from it, they will receive a notification to start or turn off their appliances. The range specified by Samsung is between 150 meters to 30 kilometers.

Microwave: One of the interesting features of Samsung Microwave is the ability to personalize diet recipes. The Bespoke AI can automatically customize the recipe to a ‘low-fat’ version, helping users to stay healthy.

Washing Machine: Samsung’s new Front Load Washing Machine comes with AI Control, which allows it to learn your laundry routines over time and adjust its wash cycles accordingly. The machine automatically adapts to your most frequently used wash settings, unless you choose to manually customize a different wash cycle. In addition, the AI Wash feature is able to detect the weight of your laundry, the type of fabrics, their softness, the soiling level, and the detergent level to create a personalized wash recipe.

Samsung is dedicated to delivering a superior home experience and is committed to developing products that can help build a better future for the environment and society at large. With SmartThings Energy, users can easily monitor and control the amount of energy consumed by their connected Samsung appliances. We are confident that this feature will prove to be a game-changer in the way people consume energy and contribute towards a greener future.

Samsung has developed an energy-saving method that uses AI algorithm based on usage patterns. This method, called AI Energy Mode, can provide up to 10% energy savings in refrigerators, up to 20% in air conditioners, and up to 70% in washing machines. In addition, Samsung’s Bespoke appliances are designed to reduce CO2 emissions. For example, a 5-star rated Samsung Refrigerator can reduce CO2 emissions by 359kg/year. When used with AI Energy Mode, the savings increase by 10%, resulting in a total reduction of CO2 emissions by 395kg/year.

The appliances are equipped with a service named Smart Forward, which offers regular software updates that include AI features such as Home Care, ensuring that the devices remain secure and up-to-date. Samsung has not yet confirmed how long the software updates will be provided for in the future. However, SmartThings Home Care keeps a check on your appliances, alerts you if any abnormality arises, and suggests a solution, making maintenance easy. Moreover, you will receive a notification in case an accessory needs replacement, ensuring hassle-free operation of your devices.

Samsung Galaxy XCover7 Review: Toughness Redefined!

Samsung has recently launched the Galaxy XCover7, a smartphone specifically designed for enterprise customers in India. This is the first time that Samsung has released an enterprise-exclusive smartphone for the Indian market, which is also manufactured in India. Unlike other smartphones, the Galaxy XCover7 is built to withstand extreme conditions and aims to ease the lives of professionals.

DESIGN

The Samsung Galaxy XCover7 has a rugged design, which makes it appear like it comes with a pre-installed rugged case out-of-the-box. The device looks bulky, but its ruggedness enhances its durability. The device is 10 cm thick and weighs 240 grams, making it sturdy for enterprise-level usage.

Samsung designed this device with a removable back cover, making it easy to quickly swap out the battery in the field without interruptions. Removing the back cover reveals both the removable battery and SIM slot. The back body is made of plastic, which may feel flimsy when removed, but the device feels sturdy when attached to the device. The removable cover reveals a 4050 mAh removable battery, which also accommodates the NFC antenna for NFC payment or any NFC-enabled software.

The device supports dual SIM, with one physical slot and one eSIM, and also has a slot for a MicroSD memory card. However, the phone’s battery must be removed to access these physical slots. The Galaxy XCover7 has 128GB of storage but can be expanded up to 1TB, providing ample storage space. Samsung added a big customizable functional key named XCover key on the left side of the device, which can be customized within the software. There are two options, a Single Press and Press and Hold option; both are customizable. It acts as a quick shortcut. For example, a single press can be configured to Turn ON the flashlight and a long Press to Turn the Camera ON. This can also be accessible even when the phone is locked, that can be enabled or disabled depending on the need.

The Samsung Galaxy XCover7 is designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, as it comes with an IP68 dust and water resistance rating. This means that the device is well protected from dust, sand, and water and can survive being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for as long as 30 minutes. Additionally, the device has undergone military-grade testing and can withstand drops up to 1.5 meters without getting damaged. Overall, the Galaxy XCover7 is a rugged device that can handle tough situations and environments with ease.

The device has a 6.6-inch display and is reinforced with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+, a premium glass material known for its exceptional durability and resistance to scratches and cracks. The device can be used without worrying about damaging the screen. However, it’s worth noting that the device’s thick bezel around all sides may be noticeable to some users.

In addition to the Type-C charging port, Samsung has also included POGO Pins on the smartphone, which are used to charge the device with a POGO charging dock, available separately. The Samsung Galaxy XCover7 can be charged with a maximum 15 watt wired charger. Samsung only provides a Type-C charging cable, so adapters need to be purchased separately.

PERFORMANCE

With the enterprise in mind, Samsung has created the Galaxy XCover7, ensuring that it provides adequate performance capabilities without increasing the product cost. The device is equipped with a MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ octa-core processor supported by 6GB of RAM, which enables it to efficiently handle the latest Android 14 operating system and ONE UI. I put the device to the test by running a variety of everyday work related apps such as Mail, Calendars, and social media and performed multitasking. The device performed smoothly without any noticeable lags. The processor’s high clock speed ensures the device can handle multiple tasks simultaneously and switch between them without delay. The 6GB of RAM provides ample memory to keep multiple apps open in the background without affecting the device’s performance.

Not everyone might want to play games on this phone, but it can play any casual game without experiencing lags. However, when it comes to heavy gaming titles like BGMI and Call of Duty, there is a slight frame drop after prolonged gaming. While playing BGMI, I achieved an average of 30 FPS, which is decent for gaming on this phone. It’s worth noting that this phone wasn’t primarily designed for gaming, so these results are expected.

The Galaxy XCover7 is known for its exceptional security features. It comes with Samsung Knox Vault, which stores all security data, such as password patterns and critical information, on separate tamper-resistant hardware. Additionally, the Galaxy XCover7 Enterprise Edition offers a Knox suite subscription for 12 months, providing users with the essential tools to secure, deploy, and manage their devices throughout their lifecycle.

The phone has a 6.6-inch FHD+ LCD display that offers a decent colour and an impressive viewing angle with high resolution. However, its refresh rate is limited to 60Hz, which means that the visual transitions on the screen may not be as smooth as some high-end phones. Moreover, the display’s maximum brightness is just 600 nits, making viewing in bright or under direct sunlight difficult. On the bright side, the phone’s touch response is impressive and accurate, so you can use it conveniently, even with thick gloves or wet hands.

With medium day-to-day usage, the 4050mAh battery of Galaxy XCover7 can keep the phone running for a full day. It can be quickly charged with a maximum 15 Watt fast-charging, which takes nearly 3.5 hours to fully charge the phone up to 100%. The phone has a removable battery, which can be swapped without turning off the smartphone. While connected to the charger, the phone can stay ON for up to 10 seconds, giving the user enough time to quickly change the battery without turning it off.

CAMERA

The Samsung Galaxy XCover7 is a reliable and durable smartphone with a single primary camera and dual LED flash. A 50-megapixel primary camera primarily optimized for multiple barcode/QR code scanning. This feature makes the Galaxy XCover7 an ideal choice for professionals who need to scan codes frequently for their work. The camera also delivers decent image quality, whether you’re taking photos in low-light conditions or bright outdoor environments. Additionally, the smartphone features a 5-megapixel front camera that delivers crystal-clear selfies and video calls.

VERDICT

The Samsung Galaxy XCover7 is a smartphone designed specifically for enterprise-level use, focusing on durability and harsh environments. Its rugged design provides protection from drops, water, and dust, making it an ideal choice for businesses that require a device that can withstand everyday wear and tear. The device also features a removable battery, offering added convenience. With 5G connectivity, the XCover7 allows for faster and seamless communication across India, providing businesses with a reliable method of staying connected. If you are a business owner in need of a smartphone that can handle the demands of daily use, the Samsung Galaxy XCover7 is an excellent option.

Samsung reclaimed the throne of best-selling smartphone maker in India

In a dramatic turn of events, Samsung has reclaimed its throne as the smartphone king in India for 2023, toppling Xiaomi’s six-year reign. Despite this, Xiaomi showcased remarkable resilience by maintaining its supremacy in Q4 with an impressive 18.3% market share, courtesy of Redmi and Poco brands.

The overall smartphone shipments for 2023 stagnated at approximately 152 million units. The industry faced a challenging first half, but a spirited recovery in the second half, fueled by 5G upgrades and robust festive sales, breathed life into the market. Notably, Apple achieved a historic milestone by surpassing 10 million shipments in India.

Samsung’s resurgence was attributed to aggressive offline marketing and stellar performance from the A series, while the premium segment adopted a focused strategy. Vivo secured the second spot with its innovative CMF design approach, prominently featuring the vivo V29 series and achieving success with the T series in the offline segment.

Xiaomi maintained its edge in the final quarter by introducing 5G phones in the affordable segment and streamlining its portfolio, avoiding duplication and consumer confusion. The premium smartphone market in India experienced a staggering 64% YoY growth, propelled by financing schemes that enabled more customers to embrace higher-priced smartphones.

As the industry looks ahead, the forecast for the upcoming year anticipates a surge in demand for devices supporting Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, and Generative AI. Foldables are poised for a prosperous future, with Counterpoint predicting the segment will surpass 1 million shipments in 2024.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 will arrive with a larger 3.9″ cover display and a bigger battery

Samsung fans get prepared for an imminent upgrade in the iconic Flip series. Battling the perennial woe of battery longevity, Samsung has heeded the cries of Flip enthusiasts. It’s time to welcome the Galaxy Z Flip6, poised to steal the limelight in the middle of this year with a formidable power boost.

Venturing beyond the constraints of its predecessors, the Flip6 is set to house a 4,000 mAh battery, a leap from the modest 3,700 mAh of the Galaxy Z Flip5. While it may trail slightly behind Oppo’s Find N3 Flip and its robust 4,300 mAh powerhouse, the incremental upgrade is a lifeline for avid Flip users who crave every ounce of endurance.

Delving into the intricacies, the Flip6 orchestrates its energy symphony with a dual-cell configuration – 1,097 mAh paired with 2,790 mAh. A cumulative rated capacity of 3,887 mAh promises a tangible 4,000 mAh typical capacity. In comparison, the Flip5’s dual-cell setup musters a total rated capacity of 3,591 mAh, translating to a typical capacity of 3,700 mAh.

Beyond the power play, whispers in the tech corridors hint at a larger 3.9″ cover display, a half-inch augmentation from its predecessor’s 3.4″ counterpart. A photographic upgrade is also on the horizon, with the Flip6 boasting a 50 MP main camera, a leap from the Flip5’s 12 MP lens. As the Z Flip6 prepares to unfurl its innovations, the anticipation for a foldable revolution with extended vitality and enhanced features reaches a crescendo. Buckle up, Samsung enthusiasts; the future of Flip is on the horizon.

SAMSUNG TRANSPARENT MICRO LED TV

Samsung showcased the world’s first transparent Micro LED TVs in 76, 89, 101, and 114-inch screen sizes, featuring a transparent panel that allows content to be viewed through the display. The TVs use an innovative manufacturing process that prints Micro LED chips on a single piece of glass, giving it a glass-like look. The high pixel density of Micro LED ensures sharp and clear images. Samsung’s Micro LED panels are transparent and modular, allowing for customization in any aspect, such as ratio, shape, and size, making them perfect for giant scoreboards and commercial use. The transparent Micro LED displays have high brightness, making them not affected by ambient light, and remain clear and crisp regardless of the surrounding light.

SAMSUNG FLEX IN & FLEX OUT PROTOTYPE

Samsung has revealed a new concept phone called the Flex In & Out Flip. This phone has the ability to fold in both directions, including completely backward, allowing users to still use the 6.7-inch screen when the phone is closed. Although it is still in the prototype stage, it showcases Samsung’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of foldable technology. The device’s user interface is designed to adjust seamlessly to its movement, displaying icons, media controls, quick settings, battery level, and the time on the larger screen. One noteworthy feature of the Flex In & Out Flip is that its camera is not obstructed when the phone is folded backward. Samsung has also emphasized the device’s durability by putting it through rigorous testing, such as folding it in extreme temperatures and testing it against bouncing basketballs on its foldable panels.

SAMSUNG MUSIC FRAME

Samsung has innovatively applied its Frame smart TV concept to speakers by introducing its new Music Frame, a customizable Bluetooth speaker that looks like a 12.9 x 12.9 picture frame. It has two built-in woofers, two tweeters, two mid-range drivers, and intelligent audio processing. It can operate as a standalone stereo wireless speaker. The frame can also pair with Q-Symphony-compatible Samsung TVs and soundbars to expand virtual surround when placed to the left/right of the screen or provide true rear channels from the side/back. You can hang it on the wall or use its built-in stand to place it on a table. The company’s transducer development for thin flatscreens has contributed to the frame’s surprising bass, whether mounted free or flush. Nearby Share and Quick Share Merging into one cross-Android Solution

Apple has AirDrop and AirPlay to share files between devices or stream content to connected displays, but being an open ecosystem, what does Android have in common? Well, not much to be proud of (at least until 2023), but now they have something valuable in their quiver.

Google has unleashed a series of cutting-edge features at the CES 2024, with the spotlight on the revolutionary Quick Share system. Crafted in collaboration with Samsung, this innovation is poised to supersede Google’s 2020-introduced Nearby Share.

What’s intriguing is Google’s adoption of Samsung’s terminology for this service, now dubbed Quick Share. Billed as the epitome of technological convergence, Google asserts it has seamlessly integrated experiences with Samsung, fashioning the ultimate default, built-in option for peer-to-peer content sharing across all Android and Chrome OS devices.

Google is also partnering with leading PC manufacturers, including LG, to extend the Quick Share functionality to Windows PCs as a preinstalled app in the near future. The simplicity of the new system is striking, just tap the Quick Share icon, and a list of available nearby devices materialises. Users can control who discovers their device and sends files, choosing from options like everyone, only contacts, or exclusively their own devices. The anticipated rollout of Quick Share to existing Nearby Share-enabled devices is slated for February.

Shifting gears, the Fast Pair feature is set to expand its reach to Chromecast with Google TV in the coming month, with plans to encompass additional Google TV devices later in the year. Connecting compatible headphones or speakers to your Google TV becomes a seamless experience with a single tap after putting your accessory in pairing mode. Google tantalisingly hints at user-friendly audio output controls for swift transitions back to default TV audio.

Google foresees LG’s 2024 TV lineup, along with devices in LG Hospitality and LG Healthcare, featuring Chromecast built-in, opening avenues for seamless casting from your phone to the LG TV in your hotel or hospital room. The tech giant reveals an impressive user base of over 220 million monthly active Google TV and Android TV devices.

An upcoming casting feature, slated for later this year, will empower users to seamlessly shift what’s playing on Spotify and YouTube Music from their Pixel phone to a docked Pixel Tablet when in proximity. This functionality promises a smooth transition from on-the-go listening to an immersive tablet experience at home.

Looking ahead, LG TVs and select Google TV and Android TV devices are poised to evolve into hubs for Google Home, simplifying the process of adding Matter protocol-supported devices to home networks and enabling local control through the Google Home app.
