Android Vs iOS: Which One Should You Choose In 2021

Android vs iOS

If you’re looking to buy a new smartphone in 2021, the first question you’ll encounter will most likely be: Android or iOS? Both offer something unique to their users and also feature their respective set of advantages and limitations.

This year Apple rolled out one of the biggest software updates dubbed iOS 14 for its iPhones, which brought a ton of new features. Meanwhile, Google’s Android 11 is already in beta and will roll out sometime next year with another set of new updates.

Given both these choices and the state of their upcoming updates, which one should a potential buyer choose in 2021 to get their money’s worth? Here’s a detailed comparison to help you out.

iOS Vs Android: The Key Differences

Apple Android

Most of us know if you want an iPhone then you’ll have to spend a fortune. However, that might not be the case in 2020. Sure, iPhones are still pretty expensive as compared to an average android but they’re a lot more affordable now.

An iPhone SE 64 GB model can cost you between Rs 31,000 to 35,000. It is not cheap by any means but the specs on this phone are definitely worth it. The latest iPhone SE supports the flagship A13 Bionic chip, same as in iPhone 11, and a 12 MP main sensor similar to the one found in iPhone XR.

The camera and performance of iPhone SE is top-notch by every standard and the phone looks very premium thanks to its all-aluminium chassis.

However, Android still beats iPhones, in terms of affordability, by offering a complete flagship at Rs 35,000 price range. You can get a Samsung S20 FE for the same price featuring a 120 Hz AMOLED display, 128 GB storage, triple camera setup and near bezel-less display.

Apple Android

A Smartphone is nothing without its features. Although iPhones used to lack a certain set of quality-of-life features, with the iOS 14 update that is no longer the case. You can now customise your iOS home screen by adding widgets, new icon packs and much more.

iOS 14 made iPhones a lot like Android by enabling features like picture in picture mode, app drawer/gallery, quick-search bar, home screen management tools and so on.

Suffice it to say, some Android users can switch to iOS 14 without feeling that big of a pinch brought on by the lack of customizability earlier. However, Android again has the upper hand in this case, it features more in-depth customization by offering limitless app-launchers, themes, and icon packs.

Security And Privacy

Apple Android

In this case, iOS easily beats Android. Although the latter has made some improvements in providing privacy to its users, the control isn’t as granular as offered on the former.

For example, if Instagram asks permission to access your photos before you can use the app, you can manually select the photos you want. In this way, you can make sure that Instagram cannot access any of your personal photos or videos.

Furthermore, if another iPhone app asks for your location data, you can instead give it the approximate location. In this way, you can have total control over your privacy while using an iPhone.

Long Term Aspects

Apple Android

Android phones are not supported in the long term by security patches and OS updates. Meanwhile, Apple recently updated the iPhone 6S, a five-year-old phone with the latest iOS 14 software update.

Owning an iPhone may be expensive in initially but it lasts for quite a long time, provided you intend to use it. Many iPhone users are using iPhone 6 and 7 to this day. They continuously swap the old battery to get better battery life and Apple software updates keep their phones running like brand new.

There was that debacle when Apple tried to deliberately slow down older iPhones to force people to buy new ones, but the company paid dearly for it as well.

Needless to say, if you buy an iPhone 11, SE or 12 today, your purchase will last you at least until 2024, that’s really impressive.

Apple Android

There are only limited models of iPhones, however, there are thousands of Android phones on the market. Apple is also in a special position as it makes the software and hardware of its iPhones and hence has direct control over them.

As a result, Apple keeps its devices performing like flagship phones very easily for a long time. On the Android side of things, in addition to the stock OS, every manufacturer also applies its version of “Android skin” as well. The process further takes up more storage space.

In Conclusion

Apple Android

If you want a really affordable phone or a mobile with a ton of flexibility, customizability and features, then Android 11 is the way to go.

However, if you prefer a more personalised experience, regular software updates, and exceptional long-term performance then buying an iPhone is the best option for you.
