Netflix’s Damsel: Subverting Expectations with Nothing

Damsel is Netflix’s latest fantasy film that didn’t quite hit their maximum potential. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the movie starts by informing the viewers it isn’t the typical “damsel in distress” trope. For the most part, they kept their promise but at the cost of an inspiring ending. Their main selling point is that their leading lady, Elodie, is played by Millie Bobby Brown. Brown nails the role given to her in every way possible but it only makes the audience want more out of the movie.

Elodie and Henry

Marriages and Rituals

Damsel follows the engagement of Elodie and Henry, played by Nick Robinson, after receiving a proposal from the Queen of Aurea and Henry’s mother, Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright). She and her family set course to Aurea to scope out the kingdom and also help their poverty-struck community. Henry and Elodie don’t hit it off right away until they discover their shared love for travel. However, not all seems rosy as Lady Bayford (Angela Bassett) instinctively feels something is off.

Angela Bassett as Lady Bayford

Elodie, despite her stepmother’s advice, does not break off the engagement but everything takes a turn when she is deceived into a deadly ancient “ritual” deep in the mountains. It strikes a series of thrilling events where she has to successfully evade and survive against a dragon looking for her next sacrifice. The dragon is voiced by Shohreh Aghdashloo, whose deep, gravelly voice brings a hint of terror to the story. Brown’s performance is the saving grace of the movie’s overall lack of nuance.

People praise the VFX of the dragon

So What Went Wrong?

The biggest criticism of the movie is that every aspect had wasted potential. The harsh environment could have been utilised more effectively or at least emphasised and explored. The characters deserved fleshed-out arcs with better chemistry. More than that, the ending of the film was predictable and boring. Brown’s performance was inspiring to young girls who need a strong leading female protagonist of their age. However, the overall message the ending conveys is nothing short of lazy. The poor writing choices and inability to fully employ the creative freedom the fantasy genre allows you are disappointing.

Dune: Part Two – How to Revive the Sci-Fi Genre

Whoever said sequels are not worth it must watch Dune: Part Two. The masterpiece of a sequel to the 2021 film Dune (also titled Dune: Part One) has grossed $367.5 million globally. The director of the film, Dennis Villeneuve, shows that the science fiction genre can not only be artsy but also grand. With brilliant sound design and cinematography, Dune: Part Two is a delight for those seeking a thrilling tale of politics, religion and love.

Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya)

Where They Pick It Up From Dune: Part One

The main protagonist, Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, and his mother, Lady Jessica, played by Rebecca Ferguson, seek refuge on the desert planet Arrakis after the devastating events of Dune: Part One, witnessing the loss of their family. Part Two explores the impact left on the duo and the universe as a whole by the death of Paul’s father, Duke Leto Atreides, played by Oscar Isaac. It escalates the long-standing feud between the Harkonnens and the Atreides. It’s hard to top the brilliance of Part One, but Villeneuve has done it again. On top of fleshed-out character arcs, it dives into the different cultures and the surrounding environment’s beauty (and absurdity).

Lady Jessica takes a dangerous turn

The Story So Far

The native people of Arrakis reluctantly take in Paul Atreides and Lady Jessica, called the Fremen. They are divided in their beliefs of the two. Despite this, Paul has an intense romance with Chani, played by Zendaya, and is guided in the ways of the Fremen. Jessica, on the other hand, converts to a Bene Gesserit Reverend-Mother. Their respective arcs highlight a distinct drift between the mother-son duo. Jessica seems to draw in chaos and Paul wants peace in a possible disaster only he can determine. He must choose between loving someone without political advantages or deciding the fate of their universe.

Javier Bardem returns as the Fremen leader, Stilgar, whose fundamentalist beliefs and his growing devotion towards Paul are terrifying and comedic.

Dune: Part Two also introduces significant additions to the trilogy. Notably, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, played by Austin Butler, is the antithesis of Paul’s story. The bloodthirsty nephew and heir to Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) is a formidable and clever foe. His character adds tension to the stakes and deepens the lore of Dune. The off-screen Emperor Shaddam IV from Dune: Part One finally makes an appearance and is played by Christopher Walken whose presence is demanding and powerful. Opposite him is his daughter, Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh). She plays an integral role in the background of the movie’s events. Her intelligence immediately exudes respect from the audience and her actions are like a chess game.

The fight for the universe’s most valuable resource, Spice, that puts a target on Arrakis and their people is a mirror to real-world events. Frank Herbert, the author of the original 1965 novel Dune, did this intentionally through the lens of science fiction. This fight for Spice and the treatment of the Fremen is a terrifying reminder of what people in power will do.

Which Format Does Justice to Dune: Part Two?

The best way to dive into Dune: Part Two is without a doubt on IMAX. The massive screen does justice to the expansive world of Dune and the explosive soundtrack, created by legendary composer Hans Zimmer, enhances the experience. If you are craving or want to be introduced to the science fiction genre, Dune: Part Two has got you covered for a journey you won’t want to miss. Dune: Part Two is paving the way for science fiction in 2024 and sets a precedent for better adaptations.

It is an eternal form of cultural and social expression, and this tradition is still alive. Here are some of the best and most diverse narratives this March 2024.

When Comedy Meets Music

Writer’s Note: With our April issue centred around comedy and the spirit of fun, I thought it would be interesting to highlight music written and performed by comedians. It’s important to remember that stand-up comedians are people of many different sides and talents and these comedians are only a few examples. While these songs are mostly silly, it takes an awfully creative mind to make music that people can digest.

Bo Burnham – Bezos I

Bo Burnham

With a criticism of disaster capitalism, Bo Burnham’s ‘Bezos I’ was featured in his 2021 movie, Bo Burnham: Inside. The song is a satirical take on Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos’ life and journey, which became a huge hit on social media with Gen Z. The infectious energy and short length of the song is a genius tactic for catching the attention of social media. Burnham is known for his bold and satirical takes on world issues.

The Lonely Island – Threw It On The Ground

The Lonely Island – Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg, and Jorma Taccone (L to R)

The Lonely Island is an American comedy trio consisting of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer. After their several features on Saturday Night Live, the trio ventured into more comedy music and ‘Threw It On The Ground’ is their most bizarre but since this is their most clean song, it is the perfect intro to them. The entire song never has a moment you won’t laugh at as it paints ridiculous scenarios with a strangely catchy beat.

“Weird Al” Yankovic – Smells Like Nirvana

“Weird Al” Yankovic

The definitive Godfather of musical comedy and parodies, “Weird Al” Yankovic’s discography is difficult to pin down with his extensive parodies. While his music is not for everybody, his comedy is a classic and his energy is unmatched within the industry. ‘Smells Like Nirvana’ was singled out as it seems impossible to make a parody of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ but Yankovic always challenged music norms.

Jack Black – Peaches

Jack Black

The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023 was a hit or a miss for most people but the highlight was Jack Black’s Bowser’s performance of the song, ‘Peaches.’ The repetitive but emotional song with dramatic screaming is both relatable and hilarious. The credit definitely goes to Jack Black’s natural charisma and comedic timing. Black’s discography is filled with wild songs and interesting vocals.

Kenny Sebastian – Die Trying

Kenny Sebastian

With talent and wit, Kenny Sebastian is a serious addition to this list with his song, ‘Die Trying.’ Featured on the album of the same name, Sebastian’s surprisingly smooth vocals and introspective lyrics show his worth as a musician and add layers to his career. His album features other meaningful songs and collaborative pieces. More than just his original songs, Sebastian also performs accurate impressions of famous musicians.

Garfunkel & Oates – Me, You and Steve

Garfunkel & Oates – Kate Micucci and Riki Rindhome (L to R)

If you’re online most of the time, this song might be familiar. Garfunkel & Oates are a folk duo with Riki Lindhome (Garfunkel) and Kate Micucci (Oates). Their upbeat melody with sarcastic lyrics in ‘Me, You and Steve’ is one of the most meme-worthy songs of the decade. The song points out the awkwardness of the third wheel and is often used humorously in videos where there are trios and one person stands out. Their other songs are similar, pointing out the behaviour of others most people would shy away from speaking out about.

Illusion Cakes and How They Fooled Us

Have you come across reels on Instagram where there’s an innocent object and someone suddenly cuts into it and reveals it’s actually cake? That’s right. This pandemic trend is still going strong. Talented bakers who dabble in arts began making Illusion Cakes – essentially edible cakes that are shaped and decorated to look like something entirely different, for example, a famous book or even a glass of water.

How did this trend start?

Illusion cakes in popularity, as many strange things did, during the pandemic when everyone had a lot more free time on their hands. Tuba Geçkil, a Turkish baker, is thought to have popularised it on social media with her hyper-realistic cakes that made everyone question their reality and trend #EverythingIsCake. Our feeds were filled with objects being cut into and turning out to be cake. The level of precision and accuracy wowed and fooled us all. Illusion cakes require time and effort, with a minimum of 4 hours for good results, and these bakers had social media questioning what they were seeing.

The trend is still thriving, with Netflix introducing a show titled, ‘Is It Cake?’ in March 2022 and it was renewed for a third season, premiering on 29th March 2024. The season will be cleverly titled, ‘Is It Cak3?’, only on Netflix. A few famous illusion cake bakers to follow are – Jonny Manganello (@thejonnycakes on Instagram), Ben Cullen (@the_bakeking on Instagram), Natalie Sideserf (@nataliesideserf on Instagram) and the trendsetter herself, Tuba Geçkil (@redrosecake_tubageckil on Instagram).

Best of Tuba Geçkil

The original trendsetter and creator, Tuba Geçkil, is a hidden gem within the food industry. The Turkish baker and owner of Red Rose Cake in Istanbul creates the most artsy pieces that could belong in a museum. With precise designs and beautiful visuals, it’s almost sad that her creations have to be eaten. She has recreated Johannes Vermeer’s painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and her canvas is her cake.

Best of Jonny Manganello

Jonny Manganello (also known as Jonny Cakes) is a Lebanese-American baker who was a contestant on Season 1 of Netflix’s ‘Is It Cake’ and now creates content around his baking. He’s also a popular guest on The Try Guys’ YouTube Channel as a judge for their food-related content. Jonny dabbles in optical illusions and brings fiction to life. He also sells simpler baking kits for illusion cakes.

Rising Decibels: The Golden Era of Indian Rock Music (1980s-1990s)

In India, rock culture is nothing new. Indian Rock, or Raga Rock, entered the scene in the 1960s when everyone was listening to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Raga Rock is a kind of Indian and Western music blended together.

Where it began…

In the past, rock bands from India were referred to as beat ensembles. Bands like the Thunderbirds, Mystiks, Beat-X, and Flintstone made their mark in this genre in the 1960s and early 1970s. Singers with a reputation for covering songs include Ashwani Bali and Usha Uthup. It was at this period that well-known Western bands started releasing music heavily influenced by Indian classical music.

Where did it go after…

By the 1970s, rock music had made its way into Bollywood songs. This style was bravely attempted by composers, and the public enthusiastically accepted it. Still, only All India Radio played music; thus, the audience was minimal as well.

Indian musicians began producing independent rock songs and blending rock with traditional Indian music, although ‘filmi’ songs continued to dominate this genre. At this point, the independent Bengali band Moheener Ghoraguli from Kolkata began to play full-fledged rock music. Even though Moheener Ghoraguli only recorded in Bengali, they are perhaps the first rock band in India.

In 1984, a band known as Rock Machine became the first non-vernacular Indian rock band. Their debut album, Rock and Roll Renegade, hit the market in 1988, matching their inspiration from Def Leppard, Deep Purple, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, etc.

The amazing enchantment persisted…

When MTV debuted in the early 1990s, Indian music fans were at last exposed to a wide range of newly emerging musical styles. Rock, thrash metal, grunge, punk, and other genres were now played on television, and none of them was rejected by the younger viewers. This shift in preference inspired upcoming musicians in India, who experimented with many genres. 1993 saw the launch of Rock Street Journal, India’s first publication devoted to Indian rock music, under the direction of Amit Saigal.

Additionally, bands like Skinny Alley, Pseudonym, Hobos, Agnee, Cassini’s Division, Parikrama, Motherjane, Indian Ocean, and others came into being during this period. In 1996, Parikrama won hearts with their famous song, But It Rained, a song devoted to the kidnappings that were occurring in the Kashmir Valley at the time.

Motherjane, a rock band from Cochin, made history by being the first Indian rock band to have songs performed internationally.

Sounds of the ‘90s…

In India, the 1990s were a booming decade. The tech boom was starting, liberalisation was just getting started, and Indians were realising they had more options than ever before. Additionally, indie rock bands were starting to gain popularity at this time thanks to publications like Rock Street Journal, MTV, and the Great Indian Rock Festival. The demise of Sonam Sherpa, who co-founded Parikrama in 1991 with Subir Malik in Delhi, has refocused attention on the heyday of Indian rock music. Here’s a list of a few Rock bands that thrashed the floor with their amazing music back in the day.

Indian Ocean (1990)

The group is credited with pioneering folk rock and fusion by fusing rock with classical ragas. Amit Kilam, Susmit Sen, Asheem Chakravarty, and Rahul Ram comprised the original group. These days, the sole members of the original band are Kilam and Ram.

Indus Creed (1993)

In 1984, Uday Benegal, Jayesh Gandhi, Mark Selwyn, Zubin Balaporia, Mahesh Tinaikar, and Mark Menezes formed Rock Machine. However, in 1993, they renamed the ensemble and started experimenting with different sounds, incorporating Indian instruments such as the tabla. When Pretty Child, their debut video, was released in 1993, it became a tremendous smash and earned them an MTV Video Music Award.

Euphoria (1998)

The band’s 1998 first album included the song Dhoom Pichuck Dhoom, which you may remember if you were alive in the 1990s. After its debut, the “Hindi rock band” led by Palash Sen, a medical student, had an exponential rise in popularity. Euphoria performed at the UN in 2001, accompanied by the Pakistani band Junoon.

Pentagram (1996)

Vishal Dadlani, a founding member of the band, is now more well-known for composing soundtracks for Hindi films. However, Pentagram was well-known for its rock and then electronica music when the group first formed.

Skinny Alley (1996)

Jayashree Singh, her husband Gyan Singh, and Amyt Dutta founded Skinny Alley, one of the most well-known bands the city has produced. The group fused jazz, funk, and rock, and they had a late-night side project named Pinknoise.

Motherjane (1996)

Motherjane, who had originally formed to cover another band at a college event, went on to open for Machine Head and Megadeth. In the 2010 list of bands of the decade by Rock Street Journal, it came in first place.

Motherjane, a rock band from Cochin, made history by being the first Indian rock band to have songs performed internationally.

And it’s still Rocking

The Indian public has been influenced by rock culture for a long time. Filmmakers boldly use punk and rock in their compositions, whether they be heard locally, nationally, or internationally. And it turns out beautifully most of the time.

These days, there are internet resources like NH7, Headbangers India, IndianMusicMug, Unholy Maunder, IndianMusicRevolution, Indian Metal Scene, etc., that preserve the splendour of Indian rock.

However, music is amazing whether it comes from a digital device, your iPod, your father’s radio, or your grandmother’s gramophone. Rock will never stop rocking.

Best films reboot from the 80s/90s

The 1980s and ‘90s were the epitome of the ‘Hollywood Blockbuster’ Some would also say that Hollywood peaked during the ‘80s and ‘90s and what has followed since then has been a sad attempt to recreate the same magic while the original IPs take the backseat and reboots mint billions at the box office. The movie business might be littered with reboots and franchises as of now which can also be seen in the Indian film industry with the likes of the Cop Universe or the LCU, but there are some reboots which actually manage to hit the right spot. Beloved classics have turned to money spinners and that’s the world we’re living in right now but that does not take away the merit of some actually good reboot films.
So, here is a look at some of the best film reboots from the ‘80s and the ‘90s –

1. The 1980s: Ghostbusters (2016)

Okay, hear me out! I understand the 2016 Female-led Ghostbusters film did not impress a lot of people but we cannot deny that it was actually fun! The original “Ghostbusters” from 1984 is a beloved classic that defined the comedy genre for a generation. When the decision was made to create a reboot in 2016, it was met with both excitement and scepticism. The reboot, featuring an all-female cast led by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, took the spirit of the original and gave it a contemporary twist. While it faced its share of criticism, it introduced a new generation to the paranormal-hunting antics of the Ghostbusters while offering a fresh take on the story, complete with updated special effects and a unique comedic tone.

2. The 1990s: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)

The Rock’s ‘Smoldering Intensity’ was enough to make this reboot a winner for me! “Jumanji,” originally released in 1995, was a family adventure film starring Robin Williams. It enchanted audiences with its magical board game that brought the jungle to life. In 2017, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” emerged as a modern reboot with a video game twist. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black took the reins in this action-packed and humour-filled adventure, creating a fresh narrative while paying homage to the late Robin Williams. The film’s clever approach to the concept of video games and body-swapping added a new layer of humour and excitement for both new and old fans.

3. The 1980s: Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

“Mad Max” was a post-apocalyptic film franchise that began in the late ‘70s and continued into the ‘80s, with Mel Gibson playing the titular role. In 2015, “Mad Max: Fury Road” reimagined the world of Max Rockatansky with Tom Hardy as the new Max. This reboot, directed by George Miller (the creator of the original series), retained the gritty, high-octane spirit of the originals while introducing a new generation to the wild, chaotic, and visually stunning world of “Mad Max.” The film was celebrated for its practical effects and daring stunts, earning critical acclaim and becoming a hit at the box office.

4. The 1990s: Jurassic World (2015)

“Jurassic Park,” directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1993, was a groundbreaking film that brought dinosaurs back to life on the big screen. Over two decades later, “Jurassic World” reignited the franchise, transporting us to the fully operational dinosaur theme park on Isla Nublar. With a new cast led by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, the film combined nostalgia with thrilling action and the awe-inspiring spectacle of prehistoric creatures. The film was a box office sensation and breathed new life into the Jurassic Park series. Too bad, the third entry in the Jurassic World franchise failed as a cohesive film even with the original cast returning!

5. The 1990s: IT (2017)

Stephen King’s “IT,” originally adapted into a TV miniseries in 1990, is a classic horror story featuring the terrifying clown, Pennywise. The 2017 film adaptation, directed by Andy Muschietti, brought the story to a new generation. Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Pennywise captivated audiences, and the film successfully captured the eerie and unsettling atmosphere of King’s novel. With its skilful blend of nostalgia and modern horror, “IT” was a critical and commercial hit, ensuring that the tale of the Losers’ Club and Pennywise continued to haunt the nightmares of moviegoers.

There is a reason why we call blockbuster films from the ‘80s and ‘90s as ‘Classics’ They carry an essence which cannot be recreated no matter how many reboots are launched. However, the younger generation requires independent representation which these reboots bring. I hope with time reboots stop being pure cash grabs and put some value to their classic counterparts

Retro Binge – Shows From 80’s & 90’s

I did not grow up in the ‘80s and perhaps was too young to understand English in my growing days. It was only when I was in junior college that I got introduced to ‘foreign’ content, especially TV shows and what followed was an unhealthy amount of content consumption. Be it Friends or The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, I watched everything I could get my hands on. I can give up everything in order to experience these shows again in life but knowing that is not a possibility, I can at least recommend them to you. Here are some of the best TV shows from the ‘80s and ‘90s you can binge-watch right now –

1. THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR (1990-1996)

“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” is a timeless classic that brought the infectious charm and comedic genius of Will Smith into our living rooms. The show’s premise of a streetsmart teenager, Will, moving from a tough Philadelphia neighbourhood to live with his affluent aunt and uncle in BelAir, provided endless humour and heartwarming moments. With memorable characters like the lovable butler Geoffrey and the preppy Carlton, the show was a masterclass in blending comedy with social commentary. It addressed issues of race, class, and family dynamics, making it as relevant today as it was in the ‘90s. Will Smith’s charisma and comedic timing remain a highlight, making this show an enduring favourite. Too bad the reputation of our Fresh Price Will Smith has now been tainted by the infamous Oscar incident and the tumultuous relationship with his wife but the show remains amazing nonetheless.

2. FRIENDS (1994-2004)

RIP Matthew Perry! “Friends” is the epitome of a show that has stood the test of time. This beloved sitcom about a group of friends living in New York City has been a cultural touchstone for multiple generations. With its relatable characters, witty humour, and exploration of the ups and downs of adult friendships and relationships, “Friends” continues to be a bingewatching favourite on streaming platforms. The show’s themes of love, loyalty, and the search for one’s identity are universal and continue to resonate with viewers today. Its iconic catchphrases, such as “How you doin’?” and “We were on a break,” are still part of our everyday lexicon.

3. THE X-FILES (1993-2002, 2016-2018)

“The X-Files” was a groundbreaking series that blended science fiction, horror, and paranormal investigations. The show’s core duo, FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, had a dynamic that was both intellectually stimulating and emotionally compelling. Their pursuit of unexplained phenomena and government conspiracies kept viewers on the edge of their seats, and the show’s “Monster of the Week” episodes allowed for endless creativity and suspense. “The X-Files” showcased a perfect blend of scepticism and belief, exploring themes of trust, the unknown, and the pursuit of truth. Even after its initial run, the show returned for two revival seasons, proving its enduring appeal.

4. THE GOLDEN GIRLS (1985-1992)

“The Golden Girls” is a prime example of a show that transcends time and age. This classic sitcom featured four older women living together in Miami, providing viewers with a refreshing and hilarious perspective on friendship, ageing, and life’s challenges. The show’s witty writing and strong performances from its leading ladies, including Bea Arthur and Betty White, still make it a hit today. Its discussions on important issues such as sexuality, ageing, and relationships were ahead of their time and remain relevant in the 21st century. “The Golden Girls” continues to warm the hearts of audiences young and old, proving that good comedy is truly timeless.

5. THE SIMPSONS (1989-PRESENT)

“The Simpsons” is an animated juggernaut that has been entertaining audiences for over three decades. The satirical show follows the lives of the Simpson family in the fictional town of Springfield and provides incisive commentary on society, politics, and pop culture. With its vast array of memorable characters and clever humour, “The Simpsons” has remained a cultural touchstone, adapting and evolving with the times. It has tackled various societal issues while maintaining its iconic humour and irreverence. The show’s creators have managed to keep it fresh and relevant, making it a beloved staple of television for multiple generations.

HONORARY MENTION: TWO AND A HALF MEN (2003-2015)

While “Two and a Half Men” doesn’t hail from the 1980s or 1990s, it’s worth an honorary mention for its significant impact on television during the 2000s. This popular sitcom, created by Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn, featured the comedic talents of Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, and Angus T. Jones. The show’s humour and often risqué content made it a memorable part of the television landscape during its 12-season run. Though it came a bit later, “Two and a Half Men” still holds a special place in the hearts of viewers who fondly remember the comedy of the 2000s. The 1980s and 1990s delivered a treasure trove of television shows that, like fine wine, have aged with grace and continue to captivate audiences. Whether you’re in the mood for heartwarming sitcoms, gripping mysteries, or mind-bending science fiction, these two decades offered a diverse array of timeless classics.
