BMW Motorrad India recently launched the S 1000 R in India. Along with three variants, the naked roadster is available with a plethora of electronic and mechanical upgrades. The German manufacturer has ensured to offer class-leading features at a competitive price. Here are some of the best ones:

  1. It is derived from the BMW S 1000 RR and enhances its character as a dynamic roadster.
  2. The ‘tail up – nose down’ look gives the all-new BMW S 1000 R a significant visual impact along with its new body elements.
  3. The new LED headlamp lends an even more muscular look. The fuel tank side panels, the tank centre cover, the side panels in the shape of a stylised ‘R’ and the engine spoiler have also been redesigned.
  4. It also gets a reversible handlebar clamp for increased reach and better riding position and options for seat height adjustment.
  5. In addition to the primary colour Racing Red non-metallic, the M Motorsport paint finishes are available with the Style Sport and the M package options.
  6. The S 1000 R is the first model in BMW Motorrad’s portfolio to inherit the iconic colours of the all-new BMW M 1000 RR.

  7. The exclusive M Motorsport paint finish is reserved for the M package with the base colour Light White non-metallic in combination with Light Blue, Dark Blue and Red.
  8.  The S 1000 R is fitted with a newly developed 999cc, water-cooled 4-cylinder in-line engine.
  9. It is based on the all-new BMW S 1000 RR engine and generates 165 hp of maximum power and 114 Nm of peak torque.

  10. The bike has a 0-100 Km time of 3.2 seconds and can achieve an electronically limited maximum speed of 250 km/h.
  11. It features a ‘Flex Frame’, which is the optimum interplay between the frame design and the engine as a load-bearing element. It improves the aerodynamics of the motorcycle and helps keep the weight low.
  12. The BMW S 1000 R is fitted with the four modes ‘Rain’, ‘Road’, ‘Dynamic’ and ‘Dynamic Pro’ as standard. These enable individual adaptation of the most diverse control functions such as Engine (throttle), Engine Brake, Traction Control, Wheelie-Control, ABS and ABS Pro to suit the rider’s own skill level and riding style.

Benelli Motorcycles: From Shoguns To Shotguns

Benelli motorcycles might not be as famous or as appealing as Ducatis or MV Agustas of the world, but they nevertheless have a concrete and rich history. What began as a small garage opened by a grieving widow has bloomed into one of the most prolific motorcycle manufacturers worldwide. If you have wondered how Benelli motorcycles came to being, here is how it all started:

  • Beginning

Teresa Benelli was a widow and mother of six sons who hoped to provide her sons with a secure job and a stable income source. To that extent, she used all of the family’s capital to start the Benelli Garage in 1911, which repaired cars and motorcycles. It soon morphed into producing the spare parts that motorcyclists needed.

By 1920, Benelli had built its first in-house engine that was a single-cylinder two-stroke 75cc model. It fitted well in a bicycle frame which went on to become the basis of its motorcycles. The company soon upgraded to 98cc engines that powered Benelli’s first motorcycles. In December 1921, the first real Benelli motorcycle appeared: the “Velomotore” presented in two models, Touring and Sport (125cc). It was followed in 1923 by a bigger 147cc motor.

  • A legacy of racing

The youngest scion of the Benelli family proved to be the most radical when Antonio Benelli began his racing career. Known popularly as Tonino, Benelli was a natural racer and proved it repeatedly by winning Italian championships in 1927, 1928, 1930 and 1931.

This turned the spotlight on the Italian brand, and it became a full-fledged motorcycle manufacturing company. Owing to Tonino’s success, Benelli’s production increased, and its sales success led to the enlargement of the factory. In 1932, the Benelli brothers bought the pavilions of the sawmill Molaroni in ‘viale Principe Amedeo’, which is now ‘viale Mameli’.

  • A worldwide hurdle

Benelli’s journey to success was cut short by the inception of World War 2. The global conflict saw Benelli’s factory wholly destroyed. However, it could not destroy the passion the Benelli brothers had for motorcycles. Even during the war, the company upheld its spirit. Ted Mellors won the Tourist Trophy in 1939, riding a Benelli motorcycle. After the end of the war, they rebuilt their business, and in 1947, the company hired the motorcycle racer, Dario Ambrosini. The sports success of the new Benelli culminated in 1950 in Ambrosini’ victory of the World Championship in the 250 class.

  • Dawn of a new age

At the end of the ’40s, Giuseppe Benelli, due to irreconcilable disagreements with his brothers, left the company. It was the beginning of Motobi, with the classic two and 4-stroke egg-shaped engine of small and medium displacement. A new sales and sports success: more than 1000 racing victories in the ’50s and ’60s.

Benelli’s manufacturing continued in 1951 with the presentation of the ‘Leoncino’ whose great commercial success was at its peak when Benelli won the first ‘Motogiro d’Italia’ in 1953 with the racer Tartarini.

In 1961 the company of Pesaro celebrated its first 50 years, and the following year, to tackle the crisis of the motorcycle industry, the two brands Benelli and Motobi, were merged into one. This was the heroic time of Provini e Pasolini, of the 4-cylinder 250cc and the second world title in 1969 with the Australian racer Kelvin Carruthers.

  • Journey to the future

As the Japanese became increasingly fierce and technically advanced, the decline of the company soon became inevitable. In 1989, Benelli was saved from obliteration by industrial tycoon Mr Giancarlo Selci, owner of the Biesse group. It seemed that a new time had begun, but after the first moments of euphoria, the prospects became uncertain again.

In 1995, the Merloni Group of Fabriano purchased the majority stake of the historical brand. Andrea Merloni, the son of Vittorio, was the new company leader, and the fresh start arrived with the aggressive scooter 491. New ambitious projects, scooters and even sports bikes: the Tornado 900cc three-cylinder will also compete in the Superbike championship and the TnT 1130cc. But Benelli had soon to face a new crisis again.

In December 2005, Benelli became part of the group Q.J. It is a Chinese conglomerate spanning multiple models, segments and even manufacturers. Since then, Benelli has been somewhat underwhelming but a steady contributor to the market nonetheless.

Indian Motorcycle to bring Chief Line up in India

In 1921, Indian Motorcycle unveiled the iconic Indian Chief, one of the most historic and influential motorcycles. Now, in celebration of 100 years, America’s first motorcycle company is all set to bring an entirely new line-up of Chief in India.

Combining iconic, American V-twin style with modern performance and technology, Indian Motorcycle has designed the new Chief with a simplistic and mechanical aesthetic that pays homage to the glory days of American motorcycling. Indian motorcycle’s iconic Chief is expected to make its debut in the 2nd quarter of 2021 and capture the Indian market with its looks and performance.

All the models are based on a timeless, simplistic steel-tube frame powered by Indian Motorcycle’s powerful Thunderstroke motor; the new Indian Chief, Indian Chief Bobber and Indian Super Chief will offer three unique takes the classic American V-twin, each appealing to a slightly different rider.

Speaking about the new lineup, Mr Lalit Sharma, Country Manager, Polaris India Pvt. Ltd. said, “What could be the best way to celebrate the 100 iconic years of the Indian Chief than to introduce our iconic new lineup of Chief in India?” We look forward to bringing in a new lineup of motorcycles for Indian bike lovers. We are very optimistic that the new lineup will be a huge success for our Indian range of motorcycles.”

The new Indian Chief lineup marks the intersection of simplicity and power. Mechanical and simple; Chief models are based on a classic steel welded tube frame. The lineup features a four-gallon fuel tank, bobbed rear fender, dual outboard preload-adjustable rear shocks, dual exhaust, LED lighting, keyless ignition, and Pirelli Night Dragon tyres. Along with cruise control, Chief riders can adjust their throttle response by choosing three ride modes: sport, standard or tour.

Featuring a short wheelbase of 64-inches, a low seat height of 26-inches and a wet weight as low as 670 pounds, the Indian Chief lineup inspires confidence and is approachable for any rider. The Chief’s conventional 46mm front forks with 5.2-inches of travel, 28.5-degree lean angle, and comfortable ergonomics, create a capable machine for even the most technical ride routes.

Top riders will have access to over 80 accessories, including parts designed explicitly for Chief models, as well as several existing pieces available for Scout and Thunderstroke models. Indian Motorcycle’s accessory line has been designed to enhance performance, personalise the style and add rider comfort.

BMW G 310 GS review: No BS, GS.

When BMW Motorrad and TVS collaborated to share their engineering and technology, there was no doubt about its results’ brilliance. Among the trifecta of motorcycles that spawned in 2018 was the G 310 GS, that bore the BMW badge. It filled the gap of an entry-level adventure tourer in the German manufacturer’s lineup, thus enabling a significant audience to experience the off-road life. Although the erstwhile model had no flaws, BMW felt it needed a periodic update.

Enter the 2020 G 310 GS. Along with aesthetic updates, the motorcycle also gets a fresh appeal and a BS6 motor. Although the engine has become cleaner, its power output has remarkably remained unchanged at 34bhp and 28Nm. The bigger GS siblings inspire the three new colour schemes in its lineup, and you will be forgiven if you mistake the 310 GS as one of its bigger brothers, mainly due to the new “rally e” colours. BMW has also replaced the levers with adjustable ones, just to add that extra bit of personalisation. Apart from that, the engine, chassis, brakes, tyres, and frame, among other components have been carried forward. Not that they needed a change anyway.

Having long legs means I don’t find many motorcycles accomodating. But that was nothing that worried the G 310 GS. I was snugly nestled in its seat, and the 835mm seat height meant I could put my foot down without having to bend it much. Also, the raised handlebars meant standing on the motorcycle was equally comfortable and manoeuvrability was hardly compromised, regardless of the riding stance. Though the older G 310 GS was 5 kilos lighter than the one I reviewed, the weight was quite manageable, and I hardly noticed the change. The combination of the seat, handlebars, and slightly rear-set footpegs offer a comfortable ride, even making long distances bearable. However, its sheer bulk makes it difficult to push by hand.

The bike’s happy place is between 6000 and 7000 rpm, with peak torque kicking in at 7500 rpm. Beyond that, the engine does not complain, but instead, the vibrations that seep through all points of contact will let you know that it has begun to grumble. Nevertheless, the engine stayed faithful and pulled all along; even then, I had twisted the throttle wide open. Also, the 5th and 6th gears are impossible to redline. Trust me, I tried. The bike can cruise comfortably at three-digit speeds and tops out at 142 kmph, though it might go higher with a lighter rider. Who knows.

With a heavy clutch, riding in peak traffic does become cumbersome after a while. The motorcycle itself can be taken through tight gaps, but the clutch action means the engine might conk off a couple of times. At least till you get used to it, anyway. However, it is an entirely different scenario when munching miles on the highway or taking the unbeaten path. The brakes, on the other hand, work in reverse. While they offer good bite in city rides, they will suck the fun right out of off-roading. Why, you ask? Well, BMW has opted out of switchable ABS, and as a result, you cannot lock the rear brakes. Get the point? No. Slides.

BMW has equipped the G 310 GS with 41mm USD forks and an adjustable rear monoshock. Though the suspension setup has been carried over, what’s new is the LED lights. Along with a long and bright throw, the LEDs also add to the motorcycle’s visual appeal. However, there are some chinks in the otherwise glistening armour.

TVS updated the Apache RR 310 with almost superbike level technology, offering different ride modes, a feature-packed colour TFT instrument cluster and much more. It is somewhat disappointing that BMW did not share this technology with TVS, which would have significantly improved the G 310 GS as an overall package. Nevertheless, it is a solid deal.

With a Rs 2.85 lakh (ex-showroom) price tag, the G 310 GS might seem a little pricey. But BMW has cut Rs 65,000 from its previous price, offering a much better value-for-money deal now. However, with the competition getting stiffer, the G 310 GS will be given a run for its money by the Royal Enfield Himalayan and the KTM 250 Adventure. How will it fare against them is something only time will tell, but until that happens, you can be assured that this GS is no BS!

We can’t wait for people to try our first offerings for 2021 that are meant to be ridden hard, and ridden far!”

On the Scrambler Icon, modern yet authentic materials are combined to perfection. The Scrambler Icon version incorporates the new aesthetics. Riders will also appreciate the new Multimedia System which lets you ride while listening to your favourite music,  answer incoming calls or chat with the passenger on the intercom. The Ducati Scrambler Icon is now available in  “Ducati Red” paint scheme alongside the classic “62 yellow” colour with black frame and black seat.

The Scrambler Icon Dark represents the essentiality of this iconic family of motorcycles: two wheels, wide handlebars, a simple engine and lots and lots of fun. Scrambler Icon Dark is the perfect gateway to the “800”  range, as well as the ideal starting point for creating a personal version of your Ducati Scrambler experience. The  Scrambler Icon Dark is now available in “Matt Black” paint scheme with black frame and black seat with grey trim.

Furthermore, the Ducati Scrambler 1100 Dark PRO represents the entry model to the “Land of Joy” 1100 range. An elegant, pure and utterly customisable bike, characterised by the “Dark Stealth” livery, combined with a tubular steel frame and rear subframe in aluminium, both black. The 1100 Dark PRO has the same iconic and original design as the other two models in the range. Still, it differs from its “big brothers,” in the form of a matt black colour with parts in natural anodised aluminium and rear-view mirrors of classic style. Made to fully transmit some typical elements of the Ducati Scrambler brand, such as purity, essentiality and a sense of freedom, the 1100 Dark  PRO is the right bike to get on the saddle and conquer every road with oodles of style and character.

The Scrambler 1100 Dark PRO incorporates a 1,079 cc engine characterised by a generous torque available from low revs and a 15-litre tank that allows you to tackle even the longest journeys with comfort. In terms of electronics, the new entry of the “Land of Joy” is equipped with Ducati Traction Control (DTC), specially calibrated for this model, and Cornering ABS, which guarantees maximum safety and agility in all types of turns. In addition to that, the three standard Riding Modes (Active, Journey and City) help less experienced motorcyclists to find the right balance in the use of electronic components, choosing their riding style.

While the 2021 models offer a solid starting point, the original Ducati accessories will further enhance the Ducati Scrambler’s creative spirit, which is available at Ducati stores. The Scrambler range also comes with a new apparel line-up which ranges from jackets to t-shirts and ensures that the new motorcycles are enjoyed in style.  Based on the Scrambler line-up, Ducati India already sells the Scrambler 1100 Pro and Scrambler 1100 Sport Pro in India.

Considering the need for the hour, Ducati also started the Ducati Cares Program to welcome customers again to the dealerships and ensure that all safety protocols related to COVID are met at its stores. Bookings for the new Scramblers are now open across all Ducati dealerships in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad,  Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi, Kolkata and Chennai and deliveries will begin by 28th January 2021.

Ducati launches its first BS6 Multistrada 950 S in India

Italian motorcycle giant Ducati launched the all-new Multistrada 950 S today. The smallest ‘multibike’ in Ducati’s portfolio, it is designed to provide all the excitement of the Multistrada in a more accessible and versatile package.

The new Ducati Multistrada 950 takes things to the next level thanks to a series of improvements designed to make it safer and even more enjoyable. For the very first time, a super-technological S version featuring state-of-the-art electronics is available to fully satisfy the needs of an even greater number of motorcyclists. The motorcycle is equipped with a 937 cc twin-cylinder Testastretta 11° engine that makes 113 hp at 9,000 rpm and 96 Nm of torque at 7,750 rpm.

Mr. Bipul Chandra, Managing Director of Ducati India said, “The Multistrada 950 S is a perfect design amalgamation of the bigger Multistradas which has led to the creation of a bike with typical Multistrada shapes which is at the same time, compact, and not just visibly. The Multistrada family has gained immense popularity in India considering the growing popularity of long-distance touring and our idea behind the new Multistrada 950 S is to make Sports touring more accessible, allowing riders to explore the beautiful terrain that India has to offer.”

Clean surfaces, taut lines, and contrasting front and rear volumes remain the Multistrada hallmarks, but this time they reach new heights of quality and style. The latest Multistrada 950, in fact, features new side wings, taken from the Multistrada 1260, which make the front end even cleaner and more streamlined.

The Multistrada 950 combines Multistrada 1260 and Multistrada 1260 Enduro’s design features to perfection, taking the ‘lightest’ elements from both. The front end – with the distinctive horizontally extended headlight, the ‘beak’, adjustable screen, side ‘wings’, and tank – takes its cue from the Multistrada 1260. The rider’s seat, passenger seat, rear grab rail, the design of the exhaust and swingarm, and the wheel sizes are, instead, inspired by the Multistrada 1260 Enduro. This mix has produced a bike with classic Multistrada lines that’s also compact, and not just visually. The Multistrada 950 S includes new, lighter aluminum alloy wheels.

The tubular steel Trellis frame is linked to a new, lighter double-sided aluminum swingarm, giving the new Multistrada 950 excellent dynamic performance. The 19″ front wheel ensures comfort and fun on any road surface, asphalted or not, in the city or on country tracks. Suspension with a generous 170 mm of travel keeps comfort levels high while ensuring outstanding agility. Moreover, the 20-litre tank puts plenty of kilometers between refueling stops.

Built with long-range touring in mind, the Multistrada 950 has been designed to ensure outstanding comfort even when fully laden. This has resulted in an ergonomic “triangle” that guarantees comfort and control for rider and passenger alike. The Multistrada 950 flyscreen allows for one-handed vertical adjustment within a range of 60 mm; the accessory line also includes a lower screen. There are two 12 V power sockets, one in the zone immediately beneath the passenger seat, the other in the dashboard zone. These can be used to power items such as thermal clothing, intercoms, or mobile phone chargers. The Garmin sat-nav, available as a Ducati Performance accessory, is powered via a dedicated connector. There’s also a USB port underneath the seat, which can be used to charge smartphones.

The electronics package now includes Bosch Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Vehicle Hold Control (VHC), and the iconic semi-active Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) which continuously adjusts fork and shock absorber, based on a 48 mm diameter fork and rear shock (both electronic), Ducati Quick Shift up/down (DQS), Ducati Cornering Lights (DCL) and Cruise Control. The Multistrada 950 S can now mount the Ducati Multimedia System (DMS) and also features a full-LED headlight, 5″ colour TFT display, a Hands-Free System, Cruise Control, and backlit switchgear controls.

The entire Multistrada family features a Brembo braking system with the ABS 9.1ME Cornering device, an integral part of the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP). Bosch Cornering ABS makes use of the Bosch IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) platform to optimize front and rear braking power even in critical situations and with the bike at considerable lean angles. Through interaction with the Riding Modes, the system provides solutions suitable for any situation or riding condition.

Priced at ₹15.49 lacs, the Multistrada 950 S is now available in the Ducati Red color. Bookings are now open across all Ducati dealerships in Delhi – NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kochi, Kolkata & Chennai and deliveries will begin by the second week of November.

Unleash your inner Avenger with TVS NTORQ 125 SuperSquad Edition!

Many adults (like me) have an inner child hidden deep somewhere. Although we don’t usually get a chance to let the child loose, TVS is offering a great opportunity! Even if that is not the case, parents of today’s generation can now help their children unleash their inner Avenger!

The global two-wheeler and three-wheeler manufacturer recently launched the TVS NTORQ 125 SuperSquad Edition inspired by Marvel’s Avengers. The Company has associated with Disney India’s consumer products business to introduce a special SuperSquad edition of TVS NTORQ 125 – India’s first Bluetooth connected scooter with RT-Fi technology, inspired by the iconic Marvel Super Heroes.

In 2018, TVS NTORQ 125 was launched as India’s first Bluetooth connected scooter. In the past year, TVS NTORQ 125 has also introduced Race Tuned Fuel Injection across its portfolio. It continues to evolve and seeks to delight its new-generation customers – Gen Z. For Gen Z, the Marvel Universe is a strong affinity area. TVS NTORQ 125 breaks new ground with the launch of the SuperSquad Edition inspired by Marvel’s Avengers.

The SuperSquad Edition will comprise three new enticing offerings, namely Invincible Red, Stealth Black, and Combat Blue inspired by Iron Man, Black Panther, and Captain America respectively. The edition brings forth finer nuances associated with each Marvel Super Hero through the product design. To further delight the enthusiasts, the fitting campaign tagline for the edition is ‘Play Smart. Play Epic’.

The SuperSquad logo and the iconic Avenger’s ‘A’ are prominently placed on the front panel, leg shield, and below the speedometer.

Stealth Black

Inspired by Black Panther, this edition packs in the jet-black colour along with hues of purple. The scooter sports elements from the Black Panther suit as a large part of the decals. For enthusiasts, it packs more surprises with the signature salute Wakanda Forever and the inclusion of the number 66 (1966), denoting the year when the character was introduced in the Marvel Universe.

Ducati Scrambler launched in India. Avengers! Scramble!

Luxury motorcycle brand, Ducati today announced the launch of the all-new Scrambler 1100 Pro and the 1100 Sport Pro for the Indian market. Created for those who love to ride motorcycles even outside the city, perhaps also with a passenger, these new models are a further evolution of the bike that identifies with the Ducati Scrambler “Land of Joy”.

With a complete range of accessories available, the bike comes in two distinct versions – 1100 Pro and 1100 Sport Pro. Both are the ideal choice for those who want to ride a motorcycle with generous torque available right from the bottom of the rev-range. The Scrambler 1100 Pro also features a 15-litre steel tank that, combined with an all-new comfortable seat, ensures that even the longest rides are enjoyed in comfort.

The 1100cc L-twin two-valve engine inside the motorcycle 86 bhp of maximum power at 7,500 rpm and 88.4 Nm of peak torque at 4,750 rpm. It is equipped with a 6-speed gearbox and a servo-assisted slipper function that limits rear-wheel destabilization during down-shifts. Designed to be simple and accessible, this twin-cylinder engine features competitive 12,000 km maintenance intervals.

Mr. Bipul Chandra, Managing Director of Ducati India said, “Scrambler is one of the most characterful, free-spirited, and powerful entry-level Ducati in our portfolio. The new Scrambler 1100 Pro range takes those qualities a notch higher allowing riders to explore endless possibilities on their rides. It’s a mix of style, comfort, and performance that makes Scrambler 1100 Pro versatile and adaptive to everyone’s individual and demanding riding style. The meticulously thought Scrambler 1100 Pro and Sport Pro are designed to provide complete Scrambler experience as soon as you swing a leg over it. Both experienced and new riders will be able to extract the maximum out of this motorcycle considering its friendly nature and we expect them to have a lot of fun!”

The Ducati Scrambler 1100 Pro stands out for its new two-tone “Ocean Drive” colour scheme, combined with a steel trellis frame and a rear aluminum subframe, which are both black. A new right-side dual tailpipe and low-slung number plate holder ensure distinctive rear-end styling and, together with the new livery, give the bike a coiled, compact look. Another hallmark is the framed headlight; inspired by the protective adhesive tape used back in the ‘70s, a black metal ‘X’ has been incorporated inside the headlight: a detail that makes the bike instantly identifiable, even with the lights off. The 1100 Sport Pro also features a Matt Black paint scheme, complemented by side panels sporting a painted 1100 logo.

At the rear, a full-LED taillight assembly emits a soft light, making use of technology unique within the motorcycling world. LED indicators positioned alongside the headlight assembly and the rear mudguard, complete the Ducati Scrambler 1100 Pro-style to perfection.

The Ducati Scrambler 1100 PRO twins are also at the forefront of electronics. They are equipped with Ducati Traction Control (DTC), regulated specifically for these models, and Cornering ABS, which ensures safety on every bend. The three standard riding modes (Active, Journey, and City) help even less experienced riders to find the right balance in the use of electronic components by choosing their riding style. Also, both the models mount a Pirelli MT60 RS 120/80 ZR 18 tyre at the front and the 180/55 ZR17 tyre at the rear, which have been specially developed for the Scrambler.

The Ducati Scrambler 1100 Pro instrument panel has two elements. Like the other bikes in the range, the main one has a round design. Positioned above and to the right of the headlight, this unit is fully digital. It features new multi-function switchgear that lets riders select Riding Modes and modify them. A Ride by Wire throttle is accompanied by hydraulically operated brake pumps and clutch, making the controls modern yet faithful to the classic Scrambler style.

In perfect Scrambler style, the 1100 Pro comes with the new two-tone “Ocean Drive” livery and 1100 Sport Pro in its sporty attitude comes in a “Matt Black” paint scheme. The all-new Scrambler 1100 Pro and the 1100 Sport Pro, priced at ₹ 11.95 lacs and ₹ 13.74 lacs respectively (Ex-Showroom Pan India).
