Twitter’s fierce competitor Threads grabs 5 million users in a blink

Threads, the anticipated rival to Twitter developed by Meta, experienced a staggering surge of five million sign-ups within a mere four hours of its inception, as stated by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In an endeavour to entice users away from Elon Musk’s beleaguered platform, Threads offers an array of distinctive features, including the opportunity for longer posts, support from prominent celebrities, and an uncanny resemblance to its rival.

The parent company of Facebook and Instagram expedited the app’s launch by 15 hours, propelling it into the public sphere at 7 pm EDT in the United States and midnight in the United Kingdom. Threads became readily available in 100 countries through the Apple and Google app stores, albeit with the exception of the European Union due to prevailing regulatory concerns.

As the curtains were drawn on Threads, notable brands such as Billboard, HBO, NPR, and Netflix promptly established their presence on the platform. Meta proudly announced that initial celebrity supporters included renowned personalities like Shakira and Gordon Ramsay, with unconfirmed reports speculating that influential figures such as Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama had also been approached.

To access the application, users must possess an Instagram account, which serves as the gateway for login. Once registered, users have the option to follow the same accounts they currently engage with on Instagram, assuming those accounts have also migrated to the new app. Visually, Threads bears a striking resemblance to Twitter, although certain terminologies have been altered. Retweets are now labelled as “reposts,” and tweets have been rebranded as “threads.”

Unlike the restrictive 280-character limit imposed on most Twitter users, Threads allows for posts of up to 500 characters. Additionally, the platform accommodates videos lasting up to five minutes, and posts can be shared as links on other social media platforms. Users retain control over their interactions, with the ability to unfollow, block, restrict, or report other individuals. Furthermore, users can customise their experience by filtering out replies containing specific words.

Meta’s launch of Threads materialised amidst a tumultuous period for Twitter, which recently imposed viewing limits on tweets due in part to concerns regarding data collection by companies leveraging artificial intelligence models. In subsequent Threads posts, Zuckerberg addressed these challenges, articulating his belief in the necessity of a public conversations app with a user base surpassing one billion individuals. Acknowledging Twitter’s unfulfilled potential in this regard, he expressed hope that Threads would succeed where its counterpart had fallen short.

Reactions to Threads’ debut on Wednesday spanned the spectrum from cautious appraisal to unbridled enthusiasm, with many lauding its user-friendly interface and some conjecturing that Elon Musk ought to be apprehensive. Observers also highlighted the swiftness with which Threads integrated with Instagram, a testament to Meta’s formidable influence. Ironically, much of the ensuing discourse transpired on Twitter itself, where the hashtag “Threads” trended throughout the evening.

Describing Threads as a “new, distinct arena for real-time updates and public conversations,” Meta aspired to amplify the strengths of Instagram and expand them to include text-based content, fostering an environment that encourages positive and creative expression of ideas. Twitter currently boasts a user base exceeding 250 million, while Instagram reportedly commands a staggering two billion users. The race is on to witness which public conversations app will be the first to surpass the coveted milestone of one billion users.

Folding Forward – Motorola launched the Motorola Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra

Motorola has unleashed its latest innovations in the form of two elegant flip-folding phones, namely the Motorola Razr 40 and its counterpart, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra. These cutting-edge devices arrived nearly three years after Motorola’s initial Razr launch, which pioneered the era of flip-folding phones in the nation, boasting a unified display, albeit divided by a subtle crease.

However, the landscape has changed since the advent of the original Razr, with new players entering the segment. Samsung joined the fray by introducing their fourth-generation Galaxy Z Flip 4 last year, while earlier this year, Oppo tantalised consumers with the introduction of their Find N2 Flip in India.

On the surface, the Motorola Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra exhibit a remarkable resemblance, both showcasing an expansive 6.9-inch unfolded display. Nevertheless, a discernible distinction emerges in the realm of external displays. Furthermore, disparities in processor and camera specifications set the two devices apart.

India’s price tag for the Motorola Razr 40 is set at an attractive Rs 59,999, while the higher-end Motorola Razr 40 Ultra demands a higher investment of Rs 89,999 for the 256GB storage model. The Motorola Razr 40 tantalises users with a vibrant spectrum of colour options, including Sage Green, Summer Lilac, and Vanilla Cream. On the other hand, the Ultra model offers a choice between Viva Magenta and Infinite Black.

Motorola Razr 40

Kicking off with the more accessible option, the Motorola Razr 40 exudes a visual resemblance to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4, featuring a compact cover display. This OLED screen provides users with a modest 1.5-inch viewing area, boasting a 2:1 aspect ratio, sufficient for effortlessly monitoring apps and call notifications.

Upon unfolding the Razr 40, a splendid 6.9-inch viewing space exhibiting a 22:9 aspect ratio graciously presents itself. While the cover display offers a conventional 60Hz refresh rate, the main display boasts an impressive 144Hz refresh rate, elevating the visual experience to unparalleled heights.

Motorola Razr 40 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC, synergising with a substantial 4,200mAh battery. The battery accommodates 33W charging, facilitated by the included charger. The device encompasses 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, complemented by USF 2.2 storage. A myriad of sensors, including a fingerprint reader, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, ultrasonic sensor, accelerometer plus gyroscope, e-compass, and hall sensor, further enhance the device’s capabilities.

The dual-camera system on the Razr 40 encompasses a remarkable 64-megapixel OIS-enabled primary sensor and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera, boasting an expansive 120-degree field of view (FoV). For impeccable selfies, the main display elegantly accommodates a discreet cutout housing a 32-megapixel camera.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra presents a striking transformation, particularly in terms of the cover display size. This external display offers a more expansive 3.6-inch viewing area, granting users the luxury of making calls and engaging with select applications. Motorola raises the bar by adorning the Ultra model’s display panel with cutting-edge advancements.

The 10-bit display ensures an unrivalled 144Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support, and an astonishing peak brightness of 1100 nits. The main display, featuring a 10-bit LTPO panel, pushes boundaries further, delivering up to a staggering 165Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1400 nits.

Despite their divergent specifications, both phones share a robust build quality, safeguarded by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection for their external displays. The choice of materials remains consistent, with vegan or metal variants available, depending on the chosen colour scheme. Moreover, both devices boast an IP52 rating, ensuring resistance against dust and water intrusion.

Fueling the extraordinary capabilities of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, complemented by 8GB of RAM and a generous 256GB of internal storage. The device’s battery, slightly smaller at 3800mAh, supports 30W wired and 5W wireless charging. Due to its reduced size, the Razr 40 Ultra may charge more swiftly than its counterpart when utilising the bundled charger.

While the primary camera on the Razr 40 Ultra may sport a lower 12-megapixel resolution than its sibling’s 64-megapixel counterpart, its wider aperture enables greater light intake, resulting in vivid colours and enhanced night photography capabilities. The primary camera seamlessly combines with a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera that doubles as a macro snapper. Selfie enthusiasts will revel in the 32-megapixel front-facing camera. Additional features encompass dual speakers with Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound spatial audio support, 5G connectivity, NFC capabilities, Wi-Fi 6 compatibility, and Bluetooth 5.3 integration.

Motorola has indeed crafted an unparalleled duo with the Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra, exemplifying a fusion of sophistication and technological prowess. As the Indian market eagerly anticipates their arrival, consumers can undoubtedly look forward to experiencing an extraordinary and refined smartphone experience with Motorola’s latest offerings.

Eyes of Luxury – Introducing the Apple Vision Pro Caviar Edition by Caviar

Caviar, the renowned Dubai-based luxury brand revered for its bespoke high-end creations, presents the Apple Vision Pro Caviar Edition, known colloquially as the CVR Edition. Apple’s proclamation of the Vision Pro as a revolutionary “spatial computer” kindled Caviar’s ambition to transcend mere technological marvel and fashion a masterpiece of artistic design.

Drawing inspiration from the audaciously innovative flip-up glasses curated by Tom Ford and the avant-garde ski masks brought forth by Gucci, Caviar has breathed new life into the Apple Vision Pro headset, transforming it into an epitome of pioneering technology and exquisite style.

Embracing a sumptuous opulence, the Apple Vision Pro Caviar Edition, accompanied by its protective mask, proudly dons an embellishment of no less than 1.5 kilograms of resplendent 18K gold. Additionally, the headband is meticulously handcrafted using the prestigious Connolly leather, an esteemed material favoured by both the British Royal Court and the revered Rolls-Royce, ensuring a superlative and indulgent experience for the fortunate possessor.

The original Apple Vision Pro, priced at $3,499 (approx. ₹2.9 lacs), integrates the remarkable EyeSight technology, which artfully conjures the illusion of transparency by exhibiting the wearer’s eyes when approached by another. However, acknowledging that not everyone revels in the exhibition of their gaze upon the device’s screen, Caviar introduces a privacy option for the CVR Edition. This ingenious feature empowers users to enshroud their eyes on the external display, giving them greater dominion over their privacy.

Regaling in the realm of pricing, the Vision Pro CVR Edition is expected to commence at an awe-inspiring $39,900 (approx. ₹33 lacs), a reflection of the exceptional artistry, luxurious materials, and limited availability bestowed upon this exclusive offering. Caviar’s intentions lie in releasing a mere 24 units of the Apple Vision Pro Caviar Edition, heightening the anticipation surrounding its fall 2024 debut.
