Asus Zenbook DUO(UX8406MA) Review: The Multitasker

I always prioritize having a dual-display PC for maximum screen real estate and faster work. Recently, Asus launched a new laptop that claims to offer similar functionality in a laptop form factor. I decided to give it a try and put it to the test.

BUILD & DESIGN

The ZenBook series has always been known for its sleek and premium design, and this laptop is no exception. The device is crafted using high-quality materials, including a durable chassis, which makes it more durable for daily wear and tear. The laptop’s design showcases attention to detail, from the precision-engineered hinge to the built-in kickstand. All these features come together to create a laptop that not only looks great but also feels great to use.

The Asus ZenBook Duo is a laptop that offers a unique and innovative dual-screen setup, which sets it apart from other laptops in the market. At first glance, it may look like a regular 14-inch laptop with a screen and a keyboard, but upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that it has a detachable keyboard that reveals a 14-inch second display. This dual-screen setup allows you to multitask efficiently and boost productivity, as you can work on multiple applications simultaneously without any hassle.

The laptop can be used in multiple ways: laptop mode, landscape mode, or portrait mode. Both screens offer excellent image quality, with sharp details and accurate colours. The OLED displays boast a high resolution of FHD (1920x1080p), which provides a stunning viewing experience for both work and entertainment purposes. You can watch movies, edit photos and videos, play games, and do much more with the ZenBook Duo’s dual-screen setup.

The laptop’s dual display and stylish design make it a perfect fit for anyone wanting to stand out. The build quality is top-notch, and the laptop feels dense, sturdy and durable. The keyboard is comfortable to type on, and the touchpad is responsive and accurate.

PERFORMANCE

The ZenBook Duo is a high-performance laptop packed with top-of-the-line hardware, particularly in the variant we received. Its powerful Intel Core Ultra 9 processors and Intel Arc graphics card offer impressive performance. This laptop’s performance is so smooth that it can easily handle any task. Additionally, the laptop has an impressive 32GB DDR5X RAM and 1TB NVMe storage, providing ample space to store files and run multiple applications simultaneously without any noticeable lag or slowdowns.

This laptop is ideal for users who require high-performance computing power for activities such as video editing, graphic design, and gaming. The powerful hardware configuration ensures that the laptop can handle these tasks without hiccups, creating a smooth and seamless user experience. We tested the smoothness and lag of our laptop by opening multiple Chrome tabs and simultaneously editing reels on VN software. All our tasks were easily handled, and no lag was observed during the testing. While detaching the keyboard, the dual-screen mode transition feels slow despite the top-of-the-line Intel Ultra 9 Processor. We expect a smoother experience.

KEYBOARD AND STYLUS

The ZenBook Duo has a separate keyboard that is the same size as a laptop. It gets attached on top of the 14-inch secondary display. The keys have good travel and provide tactile feedback, which makes it easy to type for long periods. The keyboard is backlit so that it can be used in low-light environments. The trackpad is located on the usual bottom right side of the keyboard. ASUS has made the keyboard panel so slim that the laptop lid can be closed without being detached. They even fit Bluetooth and a battery inside, allowing the keyboard to be used separately from the laptop in dual-screen mode. The keyboard has its own USB-C port for charging, and there are Bluetooth switches to activate when you want to connect the keyboard once it’s detached from the laptop.

This laptop comes with a touchscreen display that supports the use of a stylus on both screens. With 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, you can enjoy a precise and natural writing or drawing experience. Additionally, select models of this laptop come with the ASUS Pen 2.0 stylus included in the box, making it easy to get started right out of the box.

CONNECTIVITY AND PORTS

The ZenBook Duo offers good connectivity options, with USB Type-A and Type-C ports, HDMI, and a headphone jack. However, due to its slim design, Asus has not included an Ethernet port or an SD card reader, which some users may find helpful.

BATTERY LIFE

The ZenBook Duo boasts decent battery life due to ASUS’s effective power management and optimization techniques and Intel’s efficient chipset. Despite the potential power consumption of dual screens, ASUS has incorporated an OLED panel that uses less power and introduced several energy-saving features to prolong battery life. When I use my device for daily tasks like watching YouTube videos, editing articles, and browsing the internet, it lasts 5 to 8 hours on a single charge.

The device comes equipped with a compact 65Watt fast charger, capable of charging the 75Wh battery in 3 hours. This means that you can quickly recharge your device and have it up and running in no time without having to wait for long hours. The charger is designed to be lightweight and portable, making it easy to carry it around wherever you go without any hassle.

VERDICT

Overall, the Asus ZenBook Duo is a compelling choice for users who need a multi-monitor setup in a portable format for enhanced creativity and productivity. Its innovative dual-screen design sets it apart from traditional laptops, offering a unique and efficient workflow experience. While it may not be perfect for everyone, especially those prioritizing slim and lightweight laptops over additional screen real estate, the ZenBook Duo provides a productive and immersive computing experience.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED (UX3405MA) Review: Stylish Powerhouse

The 2024 Asus Zenbook 14 OLED is a newly updated laptop with a compact design and a stunning OLED display. Despite its small size, the laptop packs impressive specs. The unit I received for review isn’t a higher-tier configuration but has an Intel Core Ultra 7 CPU and 32GB RAM.

BUILD & DISPLAY

Asus has maintained its reputation for crafting premium laptops with the Zenbook 14 OLED. The metal chassis is sturdy, and the design is sleek and sophisticated. Weighing just 1.21 kg, it’s easy to carry to meetings and events. Thanks to its thin and light design, the Zenbook 14 OLED is ideal for professionals who need to work on the go. The main highlight of the ASUS Zenbook OLED is its 14-inch OLED panel with a 3K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and vibrant colours. Thanks to the OLED display, it offered stunning visuals for work, creative tasks, and even entertainment. Additionally, the Zenbook 14 OLED has a touch screen that makes navigating the Windows 11 operating system easy. The touchscreen features Corning Gorilla Glass, which enhances scratch resistance and reduces scratch visibility.

PERFORMANCE

The ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED is a high-performance laptop that comes equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155-H processor with Intel Arc graphics. This processor has 16 cores and 22 threads and can reach speeds of up to 4.8GHz. Using this laptop for everyday office tasks is a breeze, and it can handle even the most demanding workloads with ease. I have personally opened over 40 Chrome tabs on this laptop, and it didn’t even lag a bit. I could also edit photos and create shorts/reels without any issues. The fast and efficient Intel Core Ultra 7 155-H processor and 32GB LPDDR5x RAM ensured everything ran smoothly.

In terms of storage, the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED comes with 1TB NVMe SSD, which is incredibly fast and provides plenty of space for a travel laptop. You can store all your important files, including movies and software, without worrying about running out of space.

BATTERY

With its efficient components and low-power OLED display, the Zenbook 14 OLED stands out as a laptop with impressive battery life. It comes with a sizable 75Whrs battery, allowing you to work uninterrupted for an entire workday without worrying about running out of power. However, the battery depletes more quickly when performing graphics-intensive tasks or rendering. The laptop also supports 65W fast charging, providing quick battery power whenever needed. Whether you need a reliable laptop for long work sessions or are working on the go, the Zenbook 14 OLED’s battery life will surely impress.

Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Ultra

Samsung isn’t just killing it in the smartphone and foldable arena, their laptops are making waves, too! Meet the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra, a legit jaw-dropping 16-inch screen that’s basically a visual feast and not just a pretty face. This bad guy is powered by a 13th Gen Intel Core i7, rocks Nvidia GeForce RTX 40-Series graphics, throws in 16GB of RAM, and serves up a speedy 1TB SSD storage, all crammed into a chassis that’s just 0.65 inches thick. Yep, you read that right.

The Book 3 Ultra flaunts a dazzling 2880 x 1800-pixel, 120Hz, Super AMOLED 2X masterpiece display. It’s a showstopper, no doubt. With its heftier weight of 3.95 pounds, indeed, it’s a heavyweight champion. The webcam and battery could use a little boost, but seriously, those are just minor blips in a laptop that’s dangerously close to perfection. If you’re after a powerhouse that doesn’t compromise on looks or performance, the Book 3 Ultra is where it’s at.

Apple MacBook 14” Pro (M3)

Apple recently launched the MacBook Pro 14-inch with the M3 chip, and it’s a performance powerhouse with a dazzling display, robust graphics, and an epic battery life that won’t stop. The 14-inch mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display steals the spotlight, it’s among the best in laptop town, shining even brighter with improved SDR content. Sure, you miss out on the Space Black colour, but Space Silver and Space Gray still bring the chic vibes.

Under the hood, the M3 chip is a game-changer, handling everything from a swarm of tabs to quick photo edits like a champ. Geekbench confirms it, scoring 20% faster than its predecessor. Yes, it’s significantly costlier than the 13-inch, but the upgrades are worth it—bigger, more colourful display, sharper webcam, more ports, and a performance boost that’ll make you smile. And let’s not forget that jaw-dropping 17 hours of battery life. It’s the upgrade you’ve been waiting for.

LG Gram Pro 17 (2023)

The LG Gram Pro 17 is the heavyweight champ of big-screen ultraportables. Sporting a massive 17-inch display with a sleek 16:10 aspect ratio, this gangsta brings the wow factor. It’s not just about the size, though; it’s got the performance to match and the battery life to live long enough. Sure, it’s a bit heavier than its predecessor, but that’s because it’s flexing a discrete Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 graphics chip.

It may not win the sturdiness award or the budget-friendly category, but dang, it’s a delightful surprise in the “having it all” department as it is lightweight and rocks a spacious display. If you’re craving the portability of an ultraportable but drooling over-the-screen real estate of a desktop-replacement laptop, the LG Gram Pro 17 is your match made in tech heaven. It’s the dream combo in an easy-to-carry package.

Dell XPS 15 (9530)

Dell’s XPS lineup still reigns supreme, and the XPS 15 (9530) is the shining example of why. If you’re not in the market for a one-trick pony but want a laptop that can handle your everyday hustle, the XPS 15 is your tech soulmate. Packing a punch with a killer 13th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU, the laptop doesn’t flinch when it comes to performance. It’s your go-to for seamless multitasking. Stacked with 32GB of RAM and a speedy 1TB SSD, it’s not just brains; it’s got the brawn, too.

Graphics-wise, you’ve got Intel Iris on the entry models, but if you’re feeling fancy, the pricier versions boast an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070, making the laptop a legit gaming contender. The XPS 15’s 3.5K OLED display is definitely a showstopper, it’s sharp, vivid, and downright stunning, it’s like carrying a visual feast wherever you go. If you want a laptop that’s as versatile as your day-to-day needs and looks damn good doing it, the XPS 15 is your ticket to ride.

Asus Zenbook 14″ OLED

Don’t wanna break the bank but still want a killer ultrabook? Then, the Asus Zenbook 14″ OLED (UM3402YA-WS51T) is all set to see you. It might not have the same longevity as the Spectre x360, but it won’t make your wallet cry either. Let’s talk perks: fingerprint reader? Check. USB-C charger? You bet. And the touchpad? Surprise—it moonlights as a number pad. The webcam isn’t winning any Oscars, but it gets the job done. Still, the Zenbook 14″ is no slouch, it’s got that on-the-go vibe and the battery? It’s a workhorse, lasting you through a full day of hustle. So, if you’re all about that great value without burning a hole in your pocket, the Zenbook 14″ is here to rock your tech world.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 (G733P) Review: Amazing Performance with Minor Complaints

Let’s get real for a second here, the gaming laptop market is beyond oversaturated! There is a plethora of options for people to consider before they get their hands on their gaming companion. However, it becomes easier to choose a laptop when it packs top-end specifications. The Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 laptop goes all out with the latest and fastest AMD and Nvidia silicon which simply puts it on top of the gaming laptop food chain. So, should the Strix Scar 17 be your gaming machine in the near future? Find out below –

Design: A Familiar Touch

Asus has focused predominantly on the internal components of the Strix series thus we pretty much get a similar design from the 2022 variant. The highlight of this design has to be the popping LED trim which runs at the front base of the laptop which tenfolds the aesthetic appeal of the laptop. Sadly some flex can be experienced around the keyboard deck which is not a major issue but isn’t acceptable for a laptop at this price.

While the laptop looks sleek, it packs in heavy at nearly 3Kgs coupled with a  power brick that is also thick! Hence, carrying it around from office to home was a hassle for me. While we have ample port selection over here, it can only be defined as awkward. Here’s why – you get two USB-A ports coupled with a 3.5mm port on the left whereas all the other ports are placed on the back. There is not a single port on the right side of the laptop which could have been used to at least have a single type-c port. The keyboard here is good consisting of individually backlit keys. The overall build quality here is just passable. It’s basically made entirely of plastic if we exclude the lid which sports an aluminium cover. The keyboard has a flex to it and the display has a little wiggle.

Screen: Visual Treat!

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 rocks a 17.3-inch IPS LCD panel clocked at 2560 x 1440 resolution at a 16:9 aspect ratio. What’s impressive is the high refresh rate of 240Hz which even Asus’ recently introduced Nebula displays lack at this point. The screen is anti-reflective and also supports the Nvidia G-Sync technology and Dolby Vision. Watching films and playing games on this laptop is no less than a visual treat as it is capable of producing some punchy colours. What sits on top of the display is an underwhelming 720P webcam which

Users will enjoy the display the most while playing cinematic games like The Last of Us or Detroit: Become Human. It’s not the brightest of the displays out there having a peak brightness of 330 nits. Thus using the laptop under direct sunlight won’t be a pleasant experience, though this is not the kind of machine one would use outside! Overall, there’s not much to complain about the screen here and users get an immersive display with perfect colour calibration.

Performance: BEAST!

Everything boils down to the performance when it comes to laptops in this segment. I am genuinely not surprised that the Asus Strix Scar 17 2023 performs the way it does. I tested out games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Detroit: Become Human, The Last of Us, and Red Dead Redemption 2 while testing this one out. As expected, I faced no performance issues while testing these games out. Our review unit was maxed out with the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX SoC coupled with 32GB of DDR5 RAM. In the graphics arena, the laptop sports a GeForce Nvidia RTX 4090 which takes the graphics performance of this laptop to the next level. In the current performance standards, this gaming laptop gives performance output that is at par with any modern gaming desktop.

While pushing the laptop to play graphic-intensive games, the laptop does not get too loud. It is undoubtedly quieter than most of the gaming laptops in the market thanks to Asus’ updated Arc Flow Fans. Asus uses a vapor chamber design for heat dissipation which works just alright. On the software side, users get ample customization and Asus Armory Crate remains the best centralized control software for any gaming laptop in the market.

Verdict

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 gaming laptop is one of the best gaming laptops you can buy right now. It comes with the best hardware specifications coupled with high-end performance and a sleek design making a complete package. The 720P webcam and overuse of plastic stains the otherwise premium gaming machine, however, these nitpicks can be easily overlooked due to its heavy-duty performance.

ASUS ROG ALLY Review: Your True Gaming Ally

I remember the time when the PSP was an aspirational piece of tech. The handheld gaming market may have been revived by the Nintendo Switch but it was during my testing of the ASUS ROG Ally is when the nostalgia hit me hard. The ROG Ally is going up against two main beasts i.e. Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck, so how well does it hold its own? Here’s what we found out during our time with the ASUS ROG Ally –

Design

ASUS has managed to cramp in a whole Windows PC at lightweight 608 grams. It fits extremely well in hand. Being a first-time user of a handheld gaming PC, It didn’t take me a long time to figure out how the controls work. We get a familiar ABXY button pad coupled with a D-Pad on the left. One gripe would be the absence of a touchpad, however, the ample button choice makes up for it.

The power button also doubles up as a fingerprint sensor which works well and is reliable. The top of the Ally also rocks a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB Type-C port, a microSD card reader, and a Gen 2 display port. The white and black colour aesthetic of the ASUS ROG Ally is eye candy!

Performance

This is where scepticism rises as I did not expect a handheld gaming PC to hold up this well. The entirety of our office spent considerable time with the ROG Ally as each one of my team members wanted to try it out. We played titles like The Witcher 3, COD, Asphalt 9, Paladins, and Moving Out. Extended periods of gaming did not result in a drop in performance. The 7-inch 1080P display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 120Hz refresh rate is a treat to look at. While it would be good to have an AMOLED display here, it can be excused as the display is vibrant and punchy.

The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip is backed by 16GB LPDDR5 RAM which results in top-notch performance overall. The battery life of the ROG Ally is disappointing as it lasted us only an hour while playing graphic extensive games. Whereas, playing lighter games also did not get us past the three-hour mark. The haptic response and sound quality of the ROG Ally is simply phenomenal.

Verdict

Being a first-gen product, the ROG Ally does all things right when it comes to gaming performance. The battery life could have been better but the handheld gaming PC does not disappoint.

The Consumer Electronics Show, or CES, is about to kick off on 5th January 2023. However, like every year, it has already created hype as most of the world’s leading tech giants have already announced what they’re going to reveal at the show. Let’s take a quick look at the major announcements before the actual event hits the shore.

Samsung

Samsung is known to play a vital role in the event and grabs the maximum attention every year. In a recently released press conference, the company unveiled the Odyssey Neo G9, a 57-inch mini-LED display sporting a 7680 × 2160 resolution equivalent to two 4K monitors in one. The massive and immersive desktop is going to be a paradise for every gamer as it offers a 240Hz refresh rate and a 1000R curved screen.

Besides Odyssey Neo G9, Samsung also unveiled its first ultrawide QD-OLED monitor – the Odyssey G95SC, which features a more subtle 1800R curved display, 32:9 aspect ratio and 5120 x 2880 resolution. The newly revealed monitors by Samsung are one of the coolest yet, but what caught most of the attention was the Flex Hybrid – a device with a 4:3 aspect ratio that expands into a 16:10 device; it FOLDS as well as SLIDES.

LG

Samsung and LG have always made CES their home pitch, but in 2023, LG looks a little slow, at least in the initial phase. Till now, the company has unveiled the Z3, G3, and C3 OLED evo series TVs, all loaded with the new α9 AI Processor Gen6. The latest evo series TVs will offer brighter displays, greater colour accuracy, a more personalized webOS experience, virtual 9.1.2 surround sound and enhanced dynamic tone mapping.
