ŠKODA KUSHAQ: Design sketches offer a preview of the new SUV

ŠKODA has released two design sketches to give a  detailed preview of the new KUSHAQ. The midsize SUV design for the Indian market draws inspiration from the bold look of the ŠKODA VISION IN concept car. ŠKODA AUTO has adapted the MQB-A0-IN version of the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Toolkit specifically for India. As part of the INDIA 2.0 product campaign, it is the first of four models from the ŠKODA and Volkswagen brands to be manufactured locally in India. The world premiere of the ŠKODA KUSAHQ will take place on 18 March 2021.

The first design sketch shows the powerful front of the new ŠKODA KUSHAQ, whose name is derived from the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit. The word “Kushak” means king or emperor.  The sharply cut, two-part front headlights, which extend to the wide ŠKODA grille, create a  prominent appearance. The impressive front bumper with underride protection emphasises the athletic look of the SUV.

The second sketch shows the rear of the new ŠKODA KUSHAQ, which has a clear structure and is framed by an elongated roof spoiler and a rugged rear diffuser in the bumper. The midsize SUV taillights feature the brand’s trademark crystalline structures, and the ŠKODA lettering appears in block capitals on the tailgate.

The ŠKODA KUSHAQ and the other upcoming volume models are based on the locally developed and produced MQB-A0-IN platform in terms of technology. This already complies with the new,  stricter safety and emission requirements in India. With a planned 95 per cent localisation level for the new vehicles, the technical development is being carried out at ŠKODA AUTO’s  Technology Centre in Pune.

Maserati launches 2021 Ghibli range in India at Rs 1.15 Crore onwards

Maserati has launched the latest Ghibli model that carries on the spirit that shaped its first incarnation in 1966. That means exclusive luxury, glorious style, progressive technology and of course, empowering performance. Born from a passion for race-bred engineering, Italian craftsmanship and style. Ghibli is a luxury sports sedan like no other.

EXTERIOR: The 2021 restyled signature grille bearing the iconic Maserati Trident clearly states your daring character. Inspired by the Giugiaro-penned Maserati 3200 GT “boomerang” rear lights that pioneered the use of LEDs in the industry, the new MY21 tail lights are a delight for your inevitable followers to admire. Dynamically sculpted curves and gracefully flowing lines. A striking coupé look makes it impossible to go unnoticed.

ENGINE: In addition to the class-leading 3.0-litre V6 & V8 Petrol engines, an all-new 4-cylinder 2.0-litre engine with a 48V Hybrid system is now available. All powertrains offer everything you would expect of Maserati: massive power, snarling responsiveness, effortless long-distance refinement and impressive efficiency.

FULL-LED ADAPTIVE MATRIX HEADLAMPS: The Full-LED Adaptive Matrix headlamps accentuate the distinctive Maserati look while significantly improving visibility and lower energy usage. With 15 LEDs operating at full beam, these headlamps offer a 200% greater field of vision than traditional headlamps.

SAFETY & ADAS: We made safety a top priority when designing the Ghibli. The result is high-powered luxury with a 5-star EURO NCAP safety rating.

ADVANCED DRIVING ASSISTANCE SYSTEM (ADAS): MY21 Ghibli is equipped with a comprehensive range of Level 2 ADAS, the highest level of autonomous driving currently permitted. It means even greater peace of mind in a variety of traffic conditions.

SOFT-CLOSE DOORS AND KEYLESS ENTRY – The standard Keyless Entry function enables you to open the doors or boot via the handles, without touching the key fob. Soft Close Doors securely, effortlessly and noiselessly closes doors left slightly ajar, increasing the car’s safety and comfort, particularly for children in the back seat.

CHASSIS AND WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION: Lightweight construction and intelligent systems are key to the inimitable pleasures of grand touring. This is demonstrated by a rigid and secure steel cell using an array of steel and aluminium alloys. This configuration maximises strength, minimises weight and retains a perfect 50:50 weight distribution.

BRAKES AND CALIPERS: Maserati continues its collaboration with Brembo, the global leader in the design and production of braking systems. Maserati brake callipers add a substantial touch of style to your car with their metallic colour flashing from behind the wheel rims.

EXHAUST AND SOUND: Nothing can compete with the Maserati engine note. You would listen back to it over and over, just like you’d do with your favourite song. Because all the things that strike a chord are driven by passion. And passion is undoubtedly behind that unmistakable sound of a Maserati that sends shivers down your spine.

POWER TRUNK WITH KICK SENSOR: Release and close the trunk with a foot movement in the area under the rear bumper. Sensors will detect your foot movement all along and underneath the central portion of the rear bumper. The system will only operate when the key fob is within a 3-foot range.

NERISSIMO AND NERISSIMO CARBON PACKAGES: Dramatically dark with sport-styled customizations inside and out, both the Nerissimo Package and the Nerissimo Carbon Package are designed to give your Maserati a more seductive, intimidating and aggressive look.

SKYHOOK SUSPENSIONS: Ghibli is equipped with Skyhook suspensions with shock absorbers to deliver continuous damping variation. The system uses sensors that monitor the movement of each wheel and the vehicle’s body to determine road conditions and how the vehicle is being driven. It then instantly adjusts each damper for optimal ride comfort.

WHEELS: An array of wheel rims allows each owner to add a personal touch to the vehicle. The Maserati range of boldly sculpted wheel rims emphasises the vehicle’s speed, power and style brilliantly.

GRANLUSSO & GRANSPORT: There is no change in the differentiation between GranLusso and GranSport with regard to all other details. Ghibli GranLusso stands out for its enhanced exterior finish. As in previous trims, it is created using exclusive materials and with special features in the finest tradition of Italian craftsmanship.

HD TOUCH SCREEN & INSTRUMENT CLUSTER: The central HD touch screen, enlarged from 8”4 with a ratio of 4:3 to 10”1 with a ratio of 16:10, is now frameless for a more contemporary look, with almost all the surrounding bezel removed. This new high-resolution display with multi-touch function carries a new graphic interface that mixes black with a golden colour to enhance its elegance. There is a subtle but very sophisticated change to the instrument cluster, which now includes a large rev counter and the speedometer on either side of a 7” TFT display with real anti-dazzle flat glass covers over the instruments.

MASERATI CONNECT: With effect from MY21 all Maserati cars are connected thanks to the new Maserati Connect programme. Having the Maserati connected at all times enables an eye to be kept on the car’s health, and Maserati Connect will alert the driver when service is due, improving the customer care experience. Maserati Connect also enhances safety and security, with assistance in emergencies and in the case of car theft. With a Smartphone or Smartwatch, drivers can always stay in contact with their Maserati thanks to the Maserati Connect app; this is also possible from home via their virtual personal assistant (Amazon Alexa & Google Assist). Through the MIA (Maserati Intelligent Assistant) multimedia system, the Maserati Connect connected services deliver a new experience for drivers and passengers.

Ghibli Hybrid:

The spark of electrification ignites Maserati’s future: with the new Ghibli Hybrid, the Trident Brand enters the world of electrification. The new Ghibli Hybrid represents one of the most ambitious projects for Maserati, which after the announcement of the new MC20 super sports car now sets the seal on another step forward towards the brand’s new Era.

The new Ghibli Hybrid has been introduced in India at a starting price of Rs 1.15 crore and, as the name suggests, is something new, electrifying, and fearless.

A POWERFUL EXPERIENCE: Thanks to its maximum power output of 330 hp and torque of 450 Nm delivered from just 1,500 rpm, the new Ghibli Hybrid’s performance data is very impressive: top speed of 255 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Ghibli Hybrid occupants will still revel in the unmistakable sound that characterises all Maserati models, thanks to the optimised exhaust which includes specially designed resonators.

MASTERING EFFICIENCY: With 20% less fuel consumption but performance in line with the 350hp Ghibli petrol version, the Mild Hybrid technology delivers efficiency with no compromises.

REGENERATIVE DRIVE: Sometimes you might have to slow down but it is only to accelerate again. Any time you decelerate or step on the brakes, energy is recharged to boost your drive.

THE COLOUR OF EVOLUTION: A cold, high-tech grey shade with blue overtones. Grigio Evoluzione is a bespoke exterior paint that gives its elegant shape the evolution it embodies.

BLUE AIR VENT: Electric sparks pass through the iconic triple side air vents to make the Ghibli Hybrid unmistakably distinctive.

BLUE SAETTA LOGO: A symbol of strength and sophistication. The timeless Saetta logo adorning the Ghibli C-pillar is enriched by a flashy blue lightning bolt.

BLUE BRAKE CALIPERS: Brembo brake callipers accentuated in blue depict the braking energy that power charges your drive.

BLUE STITCHING: All the sophistication, character, and luxury you’d expect from a contemporary premium sedan.

Like with all Maseratis, the Ghibli range will be offered with unparalleled expertise in sales and aftersales service; and customers will also have the option to configure the exterior and interior look of the new Ghibli Hybrid in GranLusso or GranSport trim using the virtual Maserati configurator.

BMW G 310 GS review: No BS, GS.

When BMW Motorrad and TVS collaborated to share their engineering and technology, there was no doubt about its results’ brilliance. Among the trifecta of motorcycles that spawned in 2018 was the G 310 GS, that bore the BMW badge. It filled the gap of an entry-level adventure tourer in the German manufacturer’s lineup, thus enabling a significant audience to experience the off-road life. Although the erstwhile model had no flaws, BMW felt it needed a periodic update.

Enter the 2020 G 310 GS. Along with aesthetic updates, the motorcycle also gets a fresh appeal and a BS6 motor. Although the engine has become cleaner, its power output has remarkably remained unchanged at 34bhp and 28Nm. The bigger GS siblings inspire the three new colour schemes in its lineup, and you will be forgiven if you mistake the 310 GS as one of its bigger brothers, mainly due to the new “rally e” colours. BMW has also replaced the levers with adjustable ones, just to add that extra bit of personalisation. Apart from that, the engine, chassis, brakes, tyres, and frame, among other components have been carried forward. Not that they needed a change anyway.

Having long legs means I don’t find many motorcycles accomodating. But that was nothing that worried the G 310 GS. I was snugly nestled in its seat, and the 835mm seat height meant I could put my foot down without having to bend it much. Also, the raised handlebars meant standing on the motorcycle was equally comfortable and manoeuvrability was hardly compromised, regardless of the riding stance. Though the older G 310 GS was 5 kilos lighter than the one I reviewed, the weight was quite manageable, and I hardly noticed the change. The combination of the seat, handlebars, and slightly rear-set footpegs offer a comfortable ride, even making long distances bearable. However, its sheer bulk makes it difficult to push by hand.

The bike’s happy place is between 6000 and 7000 rpm, with peak torque kicking in at 7500 rpm. Beyond that, the engine does not complain, but instead, the vibrations that seep through all points of contact will let you know that it has begun to grumble. Nevertheless, the engine stayed faithful and pulled all along; even then, I had twisted the throttle wide open. Also, the 5th and 6th gears are impossible to redline. Trust me, I tried. The bike can cruise comfortably at three-digit speeds and tops out at 142 kmph, though it might go higher with a lighter rider. Who knows.

With a heavy clutch, riding in peak traffic does become cumbersome after a while. The motorcycle itself can be taken through tight gaps, but the clutch action means the engine might conk off a couple of times. At least till you get used to it, anyway. However, it is an entirely different scenario when munching miles on the highway or taking the unbeaten path. The brakes, on the other hand, work in reverse. While they offer good bite in city rides, they will suck the fun right out of off-roading. Why, you ask? Well, BMW has opted out of switchable ABS, and as a result, you cannot lock the rear brakes. BMW has equipped the G 310 GS with 41mm USD forks and an adjustable rear monoshock. Though the suspension setup has been carried over, what’s new is the LED lights. Along with a long and bright throw, the LEDs also add to the motorcycle’s visual appeal. However, there are some chinks in the otherwise glistening armour.

TVS updated the Apache RR 310 with almost superbike level technology, offering different ride modes, a feature-packed colour TFT instrument cluster and much more. It is somewhat disappointing that BMW did not share this technology with TVS, which would have significantly improved the G 310 GS as an overall package. Nevertheless, it is a solid deal.

With a Rs 2.85 lakh (ex-showroom) price tag, the G 310 GS might seem a little pricey. But BMW has cut Rs 65,000 from its previous price, offering a much better value-for-money deal now. However, with the competition getting stiffer, the G 310 GS will be given a run for its money by the Royal Enfield Himalayan and the KTM 250 Adventure. How will it fare against them is something only time will tell, but until that happens, you can be assured that this GS is no BS!

Ducati India updates Scrambler family with new, BSVI models

Ducati India today announced the launch of the all-new Ducati  Scramblers in India. The MY21 Scrambler range for India now includes Scrambler Icon, Icon Dark and 1100 Dark Pro at Rs 8.49 Lakh, Rs 7.99 Lakh, and Rs 10.99 Lakh respectively (Ex-Showroom Pan India) respectively. The new series is more contemporary, comfortable, and safer, and further enriches and completes the Scrambler ‘Land of  Joy’ in India.

The Ducati Scrambler Joyvolution continues with the arrival of three new versions: Scrambler Icon, which is the perfect blend of tradition and innovation, Scrambler Icon Dark, which represents the ideal gateway “800”  range, and Scrambler 1100 Dark Pro, which is elegant, pure and an utterly customisable bike. For MY21, all the bikes in the Ducati Scrambler family become compliant with BS6 norms.

Commenting on the launch, Mr Bipul Chandra, Managing Director of Ducati India, said, “The Scrambler range has always been a favourite amongst our customers and is the bestselling model range in India. It’s easy riding nature,  oodles of character, and accessible everyday performance make it a great bike for beginners and enthusiasts.  Scrambler Icon and Icon Dark, which are now BS6 compliant, also get a retuned suspension setup which makes it ideal for daily use. I am certain that the new as well as seasoned riders will appreciate these changes. For the purists, we are also launching the Scrambler 1100 Dark Pro, which takes the elements that make the Scrambler range such a joy to ride, a notch above. The reinforced chassis and the Dark Stealth paint job makes the 1100 Dark Pro as good to look at as it is to ride. We can’t wait for people to try our first offerings for 2021 that are meant to be ridden hard, and ridden far!”

On the Scrambler Icon, modern yet authentic materials are combined to perfection. The Scrambler Icon version incorporates the new aesthetics. It is loaded with features including a BS6 803 cc air-cooled L-twin engine, steel teardrop fuel tank with interchangeable aluminium side panels, softer-feel hydraulic clutch control, all-new DRL (Daytime Running Light) headlight which boosts bike visibility in traffic and ergonomic switchgear which makes it easier for the rider to scroll through the menu.

The Ducati Scrambler’s wide handlebars, flat seats and renewed suspension set-up merge to provide a more comfortable and relaxed riding position. The new Cornering ABS maximises active safety while braking, ensuring riders get full-on riding fun.

Riders will also appreciate the new Multimedia System which lets you ride while listening to your favourite music,  answer incoming calls or chat with the passenger on the intercom. The Ducati Scrambler Icon is now available in  “Ducati Red” paint scheme alongside the classic “62 yellow” colour with black frame and black seat.

The Scrambler Icon Dark represents the essentiality of this iconic family of motorcycles: two wheels, wide handlebars, a simple engine and lots and lots of fun. Scrambler Icon Dark is the perfect gateway to the “800”  range, as well as the ideal starting point for creating a personal version of your Ducati Scrambler experience. The  Scrambler Icon Dark is now available in “Matt Black” paint scheme with black frame and black seat with grey trim.

Furthermore, the Ducati Scrambler 1100 Dark PRO represents the entry model to the “Land of Joy” 1100 range. An elegant, pure and utterly customisable bike, characterised by the “Dark Stealth” livery, combined with a tubular steel frame and rear subframe in aluminium, both black. The 1100 Dark PRO has the same iconic and original design as the other two models in the range. Still, it differs from its “big brothers,” in the form of a matt black colour with parts in natural anodised aluminium and rear-view mirrors of classic style. Made to fully transmit some typical elements of the Ducati Scrambler brand, such as purity, essentiality and a sense of freedom, the 1100 Dark  PRO is the right bike to get on the saddle and conquer every road with oodles of style and character.

The Scrambler 1100 Dark PRO incorporates a 1,079 cc engine characterised by a generous torque available from low revs and a 15-litre tank that allows you to tackle even the longest journeys with comfort. In terms of electronics, the new entry of the “Land of Joy” is equipped with Ducati Traction Control (DTC), specially calibrated for this model, and Cornering ABS, which guarantees maximum safety and agility in all types of turns. In addition to that, the three standard Riding Modes (Active, Journey and City) help less experienced motorcyclists to find the right balance in the use of electronic components, choosing their riding style.

While the 2021 models offer a solid starting point, the original Ducati accessories will further enhance the Ducati Scrambler’s creative spirit, which is available at Ducati stores. The Scrambler range also comes with a new apparel line-up which ranges from jackets to t-shirts and ensures that the new motorcycles are enjoyed in style.  Based on the Scrambler line-up, Ducati India already sells the Scrambler 1100 Pro and Scrambler 1100 Sport Pro in India.

Considering the need for the hour, Ducati also started the Ducati Cares Program to welcome customers again to the dealerships and ensure that all safety protocols related to COVID are met at its stores. Bookings for the new Scramblers are now open across all Ducati dealerships in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad,  Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi, Kolkata and Chennai and deliveries will begin by 28th January 2021.
