Legion 5 Pro: A No-Nonsense Gaming Laptop With The Best Display

The latest Lenovo Legion 5 pro has to be one of the best gaming laptops with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H CPU and a monstrous Nvidia RTX 3070 GPU. The predecessor laptops that came with the graphics card of the 2000 series were a bit of hard luck for Lenovo since Nvidia introduced its new 3000 series soon after.

This device is quite impressive in terms of its power-packed performance. It can be a suitable replacement for a gaming desktop because a gaming PC with an RTX 3070 requires a 750W of power supply meanwhile, the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro gaming laptop uses a 300W power brick. However, the desktop GPU will always remain powerful.

Lenovo Legion 5 Pro

Design

The overall case design and build quality seem quite impressive to me. You can easily open the lid with a finger effort but don’t worry, the hinge is solid and won’t totter a bit. The device has a large keyboard and a trackpad. The key is plastic and doesn’t take a lot of force to press. It also has a curvature that helps you centre your keystrokes.

The logos on this laptop looks quite classy and subtle. One drawback, however, is that the screen does not fold back to 180 degrees which I think would have been better if the plastic piece wasn’t there for the backstop.

The entire unit feels premium with an aluminium exterior with durable plastic components. Starting on the left, there’s a single USB-C port, along with the headphone/microphone combo jack. On the left is a single USB-A port. Here is something remarkable – Right next to that is a small switch that physically disconnects your webcam when not in use.

Display

Gaming laptops tend to offer fast Full HD displays, and Lenovo excels in this domain. Legion 5 Pro offers fast refresh(165 Hz) and has upped the resolution to 2K in a 16:10 aspect ratio. The display is quite right and seems perfectly calibrated.

We like Apple’s iPad or Macbook’s display because it is bright and colour accurate. Lenovo seems to be catching up with that.

Performance

The Legion 5 Pro comes with a Ryzen 7 5800H, an octa-core processor with a maximum TGP of 140W. The model also bundles 16GB of RAM, clocked at 3200 Mhz. There are two other RAM modules that can be upgraded if desired. For storage, you got two 1TB SSD instead of one 2TB SSD, which is kind of weird, but whatever gets the device rolling!

What I like about Legion 5 Pro is that it utilizes a unique cooling solution. The device consists of large heatsinks, some heat pipes, and a pair of large fans. It offers a perfect balance between the quiet fans and the performance. The gaming loads were hot, as expected, but it was a lot cooler during regular use.

Legion 5 Pro also has a nice set of speakers that amplitudes as high as 80dB, which is good enough for playing games and streaming a show.

Whopper with a Side of Bitcoins: Burger King is Giving Cryptocurrency With Its Items

After McDonald’s, another fast-food biggie, Burger King, has jumped into the digital currency world. In a recent announcement, the company said that people who join their Royal Perks loyalty program and spend at least $5 using its app can win Bitcoin, Dogecoin, or Ethereum. interesting isn’t it?

After ordering, you should receive an email from Burger King featuring a link. Follow the instructions to claim your crypto. However, the offer is open only for US residents. The fast-food chain has partnered with online brokerage firm Robinhood to give away these digital currencies to a handful of winners. The eatery announced that they will give away 20 bitcoins, 200 ethereum, and 2 million dogecoins. To win, one has to open an account with Robinhood via the company’s app. The offer is valid till November 21.

“As a brand, we are always looking for ways to reward our most loyal guests with exclusive offers that are exciting, unique, and culturally relevant. Cryptocurrency (crypto) has been a hot topic of conversation recently, but we know it can be difficult to understand. That’s why we wanted to bring crypto to our guests in a way that was accessible and digestible (literally and figuratively) – through our food,” said the company.

A few days ago, McDonald’s had turned its item McRib into an NFT. They will be given away to 10 winners chosen as part of their sweepstakes. “Our McRib NFTs are digital versions of the fan-favorite sandwich – almost as saucy as the McRib itself- and we’re giving them away to a few lucky fans on Twitter beginning November 1,” said a release by the company. This offering comes on the occasion of McRib’s 40th anniversary.

Bringing NFT into the beverages space, a liquor company sold its own NFTs and it was a big hit. Glenfiddich Whisky sold 15 bottles of rare whisky priced at Rs 13.5 lakh each, with NFTs. According to PR News Wire, the brand partnered with BlockBar, a non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace, to launch a series of 15 limited edition liquor NFTs. The tokens not only allow buyers to show off their whisky purchases but also act as proof of ownership. The bottles were reportedly sold out within seconds.

According to the Burger King Crypto website, the chain has partnered with investment app Robinhood Crypto for the promotion. Between today and Sunday, November 21, Burger King will be giving away 2 million Dogecoin, 200 Ethereum, and 20 Bitcoin. As of this writing, one Dogecoin is worth $0.27 cents, one Ethereum is valued at $4,356, and a single Bitcoin clocks in at $61,807. (Burger King puts your odds of winning a Bitcoin at 1 in 100,011.) .lets go get ours.

Facebook Changed Its Name To ‘Meta’. But Why Though?

One of the biggest news of this year has to be Facebook changing its name. Since the company’s launch in 2004, Facebook has changed the way people interact on the Internet and connected people through all walks of life. It also purchased other social media giants such as Instagram and Whatsapp and further invested and broadened its reach in a digital wallet and Virtual Reality Systems.

What is The New Name?

Facebook has changed its corporate name to ‘Meta’ as part of a major rebrand. The name, however, does not apply to its social media platforms like the Facebook app, Instagram, and Whatsapp, but only the parent company. It has also adopted a new logo that looks like infinity.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, announced the new name as he unveiled plans to build a ‘metaverse’. We will talk about the Metaverse part in the latter part of the article.

Imagine telling people you are on Meta. They will be alarmed if you are on some sort of drug. They might even ask you to consider rehabilitation. Here’s the funny part, with all the legal abuses that Facebook has had under its belt, it should actually consider a rehab….there I said it.

Why The New Name?

In a 75-minute online presentation, Mark Zuckerberg urged users to adjust their thinking about the company since he had outgrown its problematic social media network.

The company has had multiple hits on its reputation. The move to change the name comes after multiple allegations over privately and meticulously tracking real-world harms aggravated by its platform, ignored warnings about the risk of their design decisions, and exposed vulnerable communities worldwide to a set of dangerous and harmful content.

The Washington Post also reported that internal documents leak suggested that Facebook hid facts and critical information of the vaccine during the Covid outbreak. The company also sat on research that found Instagram as a leading cause of harming the mental health of teenagers and its inability to remove hate speech from its platform.

It’s like Rakesh committed all the crimes in the world, and when his secret was unveiled in front of the world, he announced that he would be called Mahesh from now onwards. Imagine someone confronting Mahesh for his heinous deeds, and he goes like… Nah bro, that was Rakesh.

However, these are the speculations and possibilities on why Facebook made this sudden move of rebranding its company. According to Zuckerberg, it is done because Facebook wants to create a Metaverse and that the company has grown above being just a social networking platform.

What is Metaverse?

Some are considering it as the future of the Internet. But what exactly is a Metaverse?

A few years back, did it ever cross your mind that a thing called Virtual Reality could allow you to experience games and movies in a way that was happening right in front of your eyes? A metaverse is just an enhanced version of this virtual reality.

You could use a headset to enter a virtual world connecting all sorts of digital environments. This virtual world could be used for practically anything- work, play, concerts, movie theatres, or just hanging out. It is like a universe in itself that is quite vacant but ships everyone virtually. You could have a 3D avatar – a representation of yourself – as you use it.

Quite exciting and scary. Isn’t it? Am I seeing a future where everyone has lost a sense of reality and is as good as their Internet connection? I don’t know. This is just an idea of this whole thing and contains no agreed definition of Metaverse.

Companies Changing Names

Interestingly, Philip Morris Co. Inc., makers of cigarette brands like Marlboro and Chesterfield, changed its name to the anodyne Altria Group to avoid press nightmares. The company was accused of rising tobacco-related deaths. Instead of making customers forget about Philip Morris, Altria’s new name just reminded them that the company wanted to avoid being blamed for the adverse health effects caused by its tobacco products.

ValuJet couldn’t shake the bad reputation it got after flight 592 crashed in the Everglades in 1996. All 110 passengers died in the horrific incident. An investigation revealed SabreTech, the airline’s maintenance contractor, was responsible for the accident due to unsafe cargo conditions. ValuJet merged with AirTran in 1997, giving up its name in the process.

In 2015, Google decided that it would change its name to Alphabet. The reasons provided had mainly to do with clarity for investors. Google’s more controversial projects, such as its efforts to expand its reach with accident-prone drones and sensitive health care technology, no longer have Google’s name on them. They’re now owned by Alphabet, an innocent-sounding company you’ve probably never heard of. If you pick up a random stranger on the streets and ask him what Alphabet is, you will likely receive all sorts of naive and dumb answers.

Conclusion

The thing is, Facebook is not the first company that opted for rebranding after it was covered in a blanket of controversies. This has been done for ages, and sometimes it works, and other times it fails to save the image of the associated company. Only time will tell what lies ahead for Facebook, um, I mean Meta.

Nintendo Switch OLED Model To Launch In October

On Tuesday, Nintendo announced a new switch model, which is due on October 8 later this year. The new Nintendo Switch OLED model now comes with a larger and brighter 7-inch screen(slightly bigger than the regular Switch model’s 6.2 inch LCD), a wide adjustable kickstand, enhanced audio, and 64 GB of storage for gaming.

Nintendo Switch OLED will be available on October 8, the same day on which Metroid Dread, the most anticipated game in Nintendo’s 2021 lineup comes out. The device will cost $350, which is $50 more than the original. Nintendo says that the new OLED Switch will last up to 9 hours, which is more or less the same as the current Switch. It is also slightly heavier(0.71 pounds) than the weight of the current Switch(0.66 pounds).

Nintendo offers two color schemes- sharp black and white, while the remaining materials look similar to the previous model. It also offers a separate carrying base since you don’t want your $350 device scratched. The hybrid dock exhibits a wired LAN port, and the port can also be adjusted to play in the tabletop mode. Unlike Nintendo Light, it can be slotted into a dock for playing on a TV or used as a handheld console.

Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser said in a press release, “The new Nintendo Switch (OLED model) is a great option for players who want to experience the new vibrant screen when playing in handheld and tabletop mode,”
As per Nintendo, the device will arrive in two color configurations: a white set which features white Joy-Con controllers, a black main unit, and a white dock; and a neon red/neon blue set, which features neon(red/blue) Joy-Con controllers. Original Joy-Cons will work with this new Nintendo Switch, and all the existing games will run on the new model.

Nintendo’s Switch has dominated the US market for two years straight, ahead of the arrival of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox One X. Nintendo’s Switch has sold more than 85M of its consoles since its launch in 2017. The demand for the system boosted after the enormous success of 2020’s Animal Crossings: A new Horizon, a game that sold more than 30m copies.

With both Sony and Microsoft releasing new versions of their consoles last year, it’s certainly time for a big refresh from Nintendo.

Tech Saves the Day – the Dash Cam

I had been looking to buy a dash cam when one showed up on my doorstep, a gift from my son. Dash cams have been around for several years and I have read several articles about the necessity to have one in countries like Russia where if you don’t have a dash cam, you will be a victim of a staged accident. Since there are many options to consider when buying a dash cam, I remained stuck, not able to finalize a decision and bite the bullet.

Now that I have had a firsthand experience, I have seen just how invaluable a dash cam is under the right circumstances. I can now appreciate why certain features are more critical than others and the ultimate importance of having one in each of one’s vehicles. My firsthand experience was an accident with our car when my wife was driving without passengers. I got the phone call just before noon from my wife that she was in a car accident.

The damage to both vehicles was to the front end and on the other vehicle the right front wheel well. On our vehicle, it was to the front end and the left wheel well. Without witnesses, considering the damage pattern of both vehicles, and both drivers saying they had green lights, it was a matter of “she said, she said” and the insurance company would not accept responsibility. That was until I submitted the dash cam video.

So what’s the takeaway? Dash cams are relatively inexpensive devices [the one that captured my wife’s accident was purchased on Amazon for under $50 US (around ₹7,496)], had excellent reviews and made by Apeman (Apeman C420) that everyone should have in each of their vehicles. Sharing a single dash cam amongst vehicles is a very bad idea because if dash cams are not fully automatic, coming on each time the car is started and staying on for the full duration of the ride and then turning off automatically, the likelihood of the dash cam working its magic in the unexpected incidents is greatly diminished. Dash cams need to be “set up, test the results by taking a ride and then reviewing the video for clarity, positioning, and automatic operation, and then forget it,” that is until you need it.

Here is my take on the critical features/options for choosing your dash cam:
  1. Resolution – at least 1080p, 4K is now affordable and would be a better option to catch license plate numbers, but it also requires 4 times the storage space
  2. Viewing angle – at least 150 degrees
  3. Window mounting suction cup – this is critical, the dash cam has to stay on your window, if it keeps falling off you won’t use it
  4. Night vision – check out YouTube videos of the dash cams you are reviewing to confirm that the captured night video is of value.
  5. Power plug – it must fit well into the cigarette lighter (power point) or the automatic operation of the dash cam will be hindered
  6. Ease of removal of the dash cam but leaving on the suction cup – this is important for theft prevention. You do not want to keep putting on and removing the suction cup from your windshield as it can be time-consuming to affix the suction cup correctly.
  7. Removable SD memory card storage.

Dash cams are not only helpful to car owners when they are in an accident, but they can also prove very valuable when a driver witnesses a road rage incident where they are the target or when another vehicle operator is the target. Some dash cams can be set up to monitor your vehicle when it is parked and even notify you of an incident if one occurs.  Since dash cams store both video and audio a driver can read off a license plate number and car description aloud and know that it’s captured on the dash cam, so you don’t need to write it down or memorize the information.

Technological advances are often a double-edged sword, where the benefits must be weighed against the drawbacks of costs, inconvenience, and loss of privacy; dash cams are no exception. Many dash cams record all the audio (unless configured not to do so) spoken when the car is in operation, so you need to be mindful of what is said in a “dash cammed” vehicle. Dash cams will capture evidence of the cam’s owner’s own mistakes and could be used to prove the guilt of the cam owner. The vehicle operator needs to pay attention to the dash cam’s signalling indicating that the cam is in operation and when the operation has ceased or like any other technology it may stop operating and become just a useless appendage to the vehicle’s windshield. However, the benefits cannot be overstated if you need a witness and one does not come forward.

Dash cams have become a commodity product. The components used to make them are inexpensive and readily available. While there are many options that can complicate purchase decisions, the most important decision is “do I need a dash cam?” As with any product, it is important to read the reviews and make purchases from reliable companies that stand behind their products. That said, the most important decision is whether or not you need a dash cam. In my experience, the answer is a resounding “YES.” Regardless of the sophistication, options and features of the dash cam you choose, having one in your vehicle is much more important than having the “best one” in your vehicle.

Ex: What is your target audience in the Indian market for Seagate’s video surveillance products?
Sameer: With safety and security being the prime concern of individuals and organizations, surveillance systems in India are becoming an indispensable part of the country’s endeavor for a secured environment for its people. The rising need for advanced security, India’s smart cities agenda, growing IT infrastructure, increasing IT spending, surging need for video analytics and remote monitoring are the trends that have been driving the video surveillance market in India.

Ex: How significant has your role been in the foundation of a smart city?
Sameer: Seagate is continuously working towards innovations in data management space that can help transcend Smart Cities from vision and conceptual phase to reality. We are helping put data to work to help cities in their quest for comprehensive data systems.

Ex: How long do you think till the need for offline data saving is eliminated?
Sameer: Managing the storage of data is among the top 5 challenges highlighted in the Rethink Data report to exploit the potential of the data collected by enterprises. Modern-day technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), the growth of edge computing, edge data centers, and artificial intelligence (AI) coupled with consumer demand has led to data proliferation. This has led to the development of the concept of Data Sprawl. Defined by the Rethink Data report as the percentage by which the datasphere increases over time, data sprawl describes the spread of the growing data through various configurations—from endpoints through edge to cloud. Data sprawl also describes how business data is scattered. This distribution won’t change significantly over the next two years, indicating that enterprise storage environments will remain dispersed and complex for the foreseeable future. Enterprises will have an ever-increasing need to manage this scattered data wherever it exists.

Ex: Can you describe in brief Seagate’s marketing strategies for India?
Sameer: We connect with our customers and partners in the markets through the Seagate Insider partner program. This year, we will continue to focus on providing comprehensive training sessions and seminars as well as working on co-marketing initiatives to better identify evolving opportunities in the changing norms currently.

Ex: What are some opportunities emerging for Seagate keeping in mind the new normal?
Sameer: Over the years, there has been a surge globally in data creation and consumption – a trend that is helping us grow. Also, with an increase in the
number of connected devices in the new normal, there has been exceptional growth in the creation and consumption of data. In India too, we have been seeing strong demand growth in enterprise data management and also video surveillance.

Ex: What steps is Seagate taking for customer’s data protection?
Sameer: Improving data security is the most important factor driving the changes to how organizations manage central storage needs. Awareness about data preservation is another challenge that needs to be overcome to protect organizational information. Recurring data backup helps in keeping the data secure throughout and provides easy access to the information as and when it is required.

Ex: Apart from storage and surveillance devices, will Seagate like to venture into a completely new segment?
Sameer: In the recently concluded, Seagate’s first annual Datasphere event, we introduced revolutionary open-source object storage software, a reference architecture powered by it, and a corresponding developer community. All three additions have been developed to manage the massive surge and sprawl of unstructured enterprise data.

Sunil Nayyar | Top leaders In Tech & Auto

Ex: What are the learnings from the pandemic?
Sunil: Pandemic has been the most interesting journey in 25 years of my career. Everybody’s patience and mental strength were tested at home. I am really sad for everybody who has suffered, though; I feel for them. Thanks to the digital world, I was able to communicate with my team and try to give them hope, a new direction, and how we should adapt to this challenging climate.

Ex: Which is the one gadget you’re using that you wouldn’t want Sony to know about?
Sunil: I am not an ardent tech freak. I use a nice android phone, a Kindle, and of course, a laptop. However, I believe humans are the most interesting and the most complicated gadget on this planet.

Ex: Leadership mantras that you swear by?
Sunil: Ethics, integrity, and insight. I believe vision is not taught, but it is within you which you someday explore. Inclusiveness is also another prominent parameter. It is easier said than done, however, and practicing it is hard.

Ex: Which segment contributes to the biggest market for Sony India?
Sunil: Televisions needless to say contribute to almost 50-60% of the market. That is followed by audio, which is becoming bigger by the day. Lastly, digital imaging. These three comprise a significant chunk of the business as far as consumer electronics are concerned.

Ex: The PlayStation 2 was touted as the first all in one entertainment system which could also play games; do you see it returning in a new avatar with full VR support?
Sunil: A lot of changes happened to the PlayStation during this pandemic. PlayStation consoles were oversold during this time, something which I have never witnessed before. PlayStation is going to be a new culture and a new way of life going forward.

Ex: Virtual reality is gradually blending with augmented reality, what are your plans to integrate AR in your devices?
Sunil: I don’t see the television getting integrated with VR. It will still be family-oriented and will offer better displays with each update. However, I feel VR will have its own universe that is developing rapidly.

Ex: Which is the one Sony product you think that only Indians can make the best use of?
Sunil: Most Indians love most Sony products. However, I feel the most relatable product for Indians will be the TV.

Ex: Elon Musk recently spoke about a neural implant. Do you think that is the future of electronics since all gadgets are getting smaller in size?
Sunil: One thing is for sure, Sony as a corporation is working quite aggressively in the field of artificial intelligence. We have the most evolved imaging chips in the industry and Sony has a lot of patents in the segment. Sony is taking big leaps
in imaging chips, especially for the automobile segment.
