Text Rewind – Google’s Messages App Testing Editing Feature for Sent Messages!

To elevate its Messages app to new heights, Google has rolled out a series of substantial updates that promise to position the platform as a formidable contender in the messaging arena. Recent enhancements include the integration of Ultra HDR support in RCS chats, introducing a visual feast with features like photomoji and animated stickers.

However, the tech giant’s innovation doesn’t stop there. Reports suggest that Google is actively developing a message editing feature, akin to the functionality found in WhatsApp. Unearthed by The SPAndroid, the beta version of the Google Messages app, released in the final week of November, subtly reveals this upcoming capability.

Diving into the details, four intriguing flags—bugle.enable_edit_ui, bugle.load_edit_history, bugle.process_outgoing_edits, and bugle.process_incoming_edits—hint at the imminent arrival of a text editing feature. The diligent folks at The SPAndroid, through an APK teardown, unveil Google’s creation of a new table in the messages database. This table, seemingly dedicated to storing edited messages, intricately captures crucial information such as message ID, the latest message ID, original RCS message ID, edited and received timestamps, offering users a comprehensive editing experience.

Although the message editing feature remains concealed from the public eye and unconfirmed by Google, it is anticipated to become a handy tool for rectifying typos or tweaking messages post-transmission. With Google consistently bolstering the Messages app, from Ultra HDR support to potential editing prowess, users can expect an evolving and dynamic messaging experience that continues to push boundaries. As the journey unfolds, these updates are poised to transform how we communicate, one innovation at a time.

HMD is prepared to enter the smartphone market independently

HMD Global is planning to enter the smartphone market with its own independent line of smartphones. The Finnish company has been launching smartphones under the Nokia brand for the past six years. Jean-Francois Baril, the Co-founder, Chairman and CEO of HMD Global, recently announced on their LinkedIn page that HMD-branded devices will be introduced alongside the Nokia devices.

The Co-founder has articulated in an extensive statement that HMD has successfully established its independent Research and Development, software development, distribution, and operational infrastructures. Furthermore, he underscored HMD Global’s standing as the preeminent 5G smartphone manufacturer, demonstrating remarkable year-over-year growth. Additionally, the company has earned acclaim for its commitment to sustainability by introducing repairable Nokia devices within the past twelve months.

Presently, HMD enjoys the distinction of being acknowledged as the swiftest expanding 5G smartphone manufacturer, boasting a diverse array of products tailored for individuals seeking respite from the digital realm. Obviously, HMD appears to be meticulously preparing for the post-expiration phase of its licensing agreement with Nokia. It is worth noting that this agreement, originally inked in 2016, is slated to conclude in 2026, a mere two years and a few months hence.

Furthermore, there exists the potentiality of Nokia seeking to continue the licensing of its esteemed phone brand to an alternative manufacturer, thus prompting HMD to proactively position itself accordingly. The smartphone landscape is poised to welcome a fresh contender. It remains a subject of keen anticipation to discern the strategic direction that HMD will undertake. Will the company adhere to its prevailing approach, characterised by a broad spectrum of devices emphasising sustainability and affordability, or shall we witness the emergence of a competitive offering as well?

The Future of Gaming – Samsung Debuts Odyssey Neo G9 with 57-Inch Dual UHD and 240Hz Refresh Rate

Samsung has introduced its flagship offering, the Odyssey Neo G9 57″ monitor, as part of the proceedings at the Gamescom 2023 exposition. This recent addition to their product portfolio takes the form of a curved gaming monitor that touts a substantial 57-inch ultra-wide panel, equating to the combined expanse of two 4K displays.

Referred to as the Odyssey Neo G9 57″, or G95NC, this monitor employs a VA-type LCD panel distinguished by its resolution of 7680 x 2160 and a curvature radius of 1000R. The resulting aspect ratio of 32:9 replicates the effect of adjacently positioning two 16:9 3840 x 2160 panels. Importantly, the dimensions of the 57-inch display stem from its ultra-wide aspect ratio, rendering direct comparisons with displays of alternative aspect ratios impractical.

A notable feat lies in the monitor’s ability to support this expansive resolution in tandem with an equally impressive 240Hz refresh rate, translating to the refreshing of roughly four billion pixels each second. To enable this noteworthy synchronisation of resolution and refresh rate, the G95NC incorporates a hybrid connectivity approach that encompasses both DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1 interfaces.

Though specific bandwidth details for these interfaces are not explicitly disclosed by Samsung, it is pertinent to acknowledge that current connectors lack the capacity to facilitate the considerable data transfer (surpassing 100Gbps) demanded by the monitor without recourse to Display Stream Compression—an aspect that the monitor duly embraces.

Underpinning its technological framework, the G95NC integrates Samsung’s Quantum Matrix Technology despite its divergence from employing a more contemporary OLED panel. This innovation capitalises on mini-LED backlighting and integrates an impressive array of 2392 local dimming zones.

This collective array of attributes has culminated in the monitor’s attainment of the esteemed VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification. The panel’s response time registers at a minimum of 1ms (GTG) and features a matte coating. The imminent availability of the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 57″ is earmarked for the US market, with a scheduled release date set for October.

India’s Leap to the Moon: Chandrayaan-3’s Lunar Odyssey Nears Culmination

ISRO’s ambitious third moon mission – Chandrayaan 3 has the entire country excited in anticipation. Chandrayaan-3’s Lander Module (LM) is all set for a soft landing on the lunar surface on Wednesday evening. This is a historic mission not just in Indian space research, but the entire globe as India aims to become the first country to reach the uncharted south pole of the moon. The LM Consisting of the lander (Vikram) and the rover (Pragyan), is scheduled to make a soft-landing near the south polar region of Earth’s only natural satellite at 6:04 PM on Wednesday (23 August)

Chandrayaan-3’s Landing Process

After a successful lift-off on July 14, ISRO’s launch vehicle, Mark-3, propelled Chandrayaan-3 into orbit. Chandrayaan-3 took multiple elliptic circles of the Earth gaining velocity. After a long journey of 3.84 lakh km, on August 5, the Chandrayaan-3 satellite entered the moon’s orbit and stabilised there for a few days. Now, the Vikram lander has been brought closer to the moon’s surface before the much-anticipated landing descent can begin.

The twenty minutes of terror, or T-20, begin on the day of landing, setting up a suspenseful conclusion. The Vikram lander will start descending towards the moon’s surface from a height of 25 km upon receiving commands from Bengaluru. The powered fall of the Vikram lander will send it hurtling into the moon’s surface at a speed of 1.68 km/s, or approximately 6048 km/h—almost ten times that of an aeroplane.

This is known as the rough braking phase and lasts for roughly 11 minutes. The Vikram lander will then begin to slow down with all of its engines operating, but the lander is still practically horizontal to the surface of the moon. The lander will touchdown with just two engines firing which will shut down once the sensors on the legs feel the lunar surface. The Vikram lander and rover are both designed to last one lunar day (14 Earth Days)

According to ISRO, Chandrayaan-3 is on schedule and the smooth sailing continues. After the successful landing, India will become the fourth country to master the technology of soft landing on the lunar surface after the US, China, and the Soviet Union.

Apple’s AirPods to embrace ‘Make in India’ label at Foxconn’s Hyderabad factory

Apple, the renowned creator of the iPhone, is set to initiate the production of its highly acclaimed wireless earbuds, the AirPods, within the premises of Foxconn’s manufacturing facility in Hyderabad. Sources with intimate knowledge of the matter have revealed that Foxconn has given the green light to a substantial investment of USD 400 million for the establishment in Hyderabad, which is poised to commence large-scale production by the onset of December 2024.

According to a reliable insider, the Foxconn Hyderabad plant is poised to take on the responsibility of crafting the coveted AirPods. This ambitious endeavour is expected to transition into full-scale manufacturing operations by the conclusion of the year, ushering in a new chapter in Apple’s production capabilities.

This development has been corroborated by another source privy to the ongoing progress. However, despite our outreach, both Apple and Foxconn have yet to provide an official response to our email query seeking confirmation.

The forthcoming AirPods production line will represent a significant milestone as it establishes itself as the second product category, following the iPhone, to be manufactured in India. Globally recognized for their exceptional performance, Apple’s AirPods have emerged as market leaders in the realm of True Wireless Stereo (TWS) audio devices.

Notably, they seized an impressive 36 per cent of the TWS market share in the final quarter of 2022, as reported by Canalys, a prominent research entity. Apple dominates the segment, followed by Samsung, capturing 7.5 per cent, Xiaomi securing 4.4 per cent, Boat claiming 4 per cent, and Oppo with a 3 per cent market share. It is pertinent to mention that Xiaomi, too, embarked on TWS production in India, commencing operations this year at the Optiemus Electronics plant in Noida.

ISRO releases breathtaking snapshots of the Moon as viewed by Chandrayaan 3 Spacecraft

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) disseminated the inaugural portrayals of the lunar terrain, as adeptly captured by Chandrayaan-3, signifying India’s third expedition to the lunar realm. Chandrayaan-3 achieved the remarkable feat of acquiring these mesmerizing depictions after entering the lunar orbit on the previous Saturday.

The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has traversed around two-thirds of the interplanetary journey to the moon since its initiation and impeccably attained the lunar orbit on the aforementioned Saturday, as officially confirmed by ISRO. Employing the GSLV Mark 3 (LVM 3) heavy-lift launch vehicle as its conduit, the spacecraft’s successful lift-off occurred on July 14, emanating from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre situated in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

In an accomplishment emblematic of India’s technological prowess, the nation now occupies a select echelon as only the fourth sovereign entity, following the United States, China, and Russia, to have achieved the feat of alighting its spacecraft onto the lunar regolith, thereby eloquently showcasing India’s proficiency in orchestrating a secure and gentle touchdown upon the moon’s surface.

Upon achieving its anticipated touchdown, Chandrayaan-3 is slated to perform its operational duties for a solitary lunar day, an interval equivalent to approximately 14 terrestrial days. This distinctive synchrony arises from the moon’s peculiar rotational dynamics, where one complete lunar rotation aligns with the passage of 14 days as recognized on Earth. Intriguingly, the financial allocation earmarked for the realization of Chandrayaan-3 is quantified at Rs 250 crore, a valuation that does not encompass the associated launch vehicle costs.

The developmental trajectory of Chandrayaan-3 embarked in the embryonic stage of January 2020, primed for a voyage initially slated for the subsequent year, namely 2021. However, the unanticipated onset of the Covid-19 pandemic wrought unforeseen disruptions to the strategic timeline of the mission.

Chandrayaan-3 stands as ISRO’s subsequent foray, representing an earnest endeavour to facilitate upon the setbacks encountered during the Chandrayaan-2 mission of 2019, which faced formidable challenges during its attempt at a gentle lunar landing, culminating in the acknowledgement of a shortfall in the achievement of its foundational mission objectives.

India restricts import on laptops, tablets and PCs

India has imposed restrictions on the imports of laptops, tablets, and personal computers with immediate effect. A government notice was shared not too long ago which announced the restrictions, in a bid to push local manufacturing. The notice revealed that the import of laptops, tablets, and PCs “would be allowed against a valid licence for restricted imports.”

India restricts imports of laptops and more

In 2023 April-June, electronic imports including laptops, tablets, and personal computers were $19.7 billion. This was an increase of 6.25% year-on-year. As per reports, electronics imports range between 7% to 10% of the country’s total merchandising imports. The former director general at MAIT, Ali Akhtar Jafri said that “The move’s spirit is to push manufacturing to India.” Jafri also added that the move was not just a mere nudge, but a major push towards bringing manufacturing in India.

India has been working tediously to push local manufacturing by giving production-linked incentives in over two dozen sectors which also include electronics. The country also extended the deadline for companies to apply for the $2 billion manufacturing incentive scheme to attract major investments in IT hardware manufacturing. This covers products like laptops, tablets, PCs and servers. Dell, Acer, Samsung, LG Electronics, Lenovo, Apple, and HP Inc. are some of the key companies selling laptops in the Indian market, a big chunk of this portion is imported from countries like China. This restriction by India triggered a rise in shares by over 5% for Indian electronic maker Dixon Technologies. As per government reports, laptops, tablets, and personal computers makeup about 1.5% of the country’s total annual reports and nearly half of these imports are brought from China.
