Here’s Why Apple Moved the Mac mini’s Power Button to the Bottom?

Last month, Apple unveiled its latest Mac mini, a pint-sized powerhouse boasting the M4 chip. Not only is it Apple’s smallest and most affordable entry in the M-series lineup, but it’s also one of the most powerful mini PCs on the market. However, as fans have come to expect, this tech marvel comes with a twist – the power button is now hidden at the bottom. So, if you’re planning to turn it on or off, prepare to pick it up, an added step that’s already sparking a mix of intrigue and frustration among YouTubers and users.

In a recent interview with a Chinese content creator on Bilibili, Apple’s VP Greg Jozwiak and hardware chief John Ternus explained the design rationale, saying that the compact size of the new Mac mini forced the button’s relocation. The redesigned Mac mini is almost half the size of its predecessor, and the button’s optimal resting place apparently ended up at the bottom.

They also pointed out that most Mac mini users simply put their devices to sleep rather than turning them off completely. Fair point, but some users were quick to find DIY workarounds, with inventive individuals designing 3D-printed hinges to make the button more accessible. Yet, for many, this quirk feels like another classic Apple move, a choice that keeps the brand in the headlines while laying the groundwork for future accessories.

Apple has mastered the art of creating subtle inconveniences only to follow up with “solutions” in the form of premium-priced add-ons. Let’s take the infamous $700 Mac Pro Wheels Kit, for example. When Apple reimagined the Mac Pro as a stationary powerhouse, it didn’t take long before they launched an exclusive and pricey wheels kit (₹69,900) to roll it around. It’s a formula that only Apple can pull off.

So, while there’s no official solution to the Mac mini’s power button dilemma yet, it wouldn’t be a surprise if a “Mac mini Stand and Power Button Enhancer” appears soon in the Apple Store, promising effortless power access with a touch of Apple elegance. At just 720 grams, it’s light enough to lift when needed, but if you’re mounting it behind a display, that bottom button could be a hassle to reach. Perhaps Apple’s next product will be an “Elevated Experience” accessory kit, designed to make the simple act of turning on your Mac mini as streamlined (and costly) as possible.
