AMD has launched the new Versal Premium Series Gen 2, an advanced System-on-chip (SoC) platform designed to speed up various workloads. This marks a milestone in the FPGA industry as these devices will be the first to feature Compute Express Link (CXL) 3.1 and PCIe Gen 6, plus support for LPDDR5X memory.
These technologies allow faster and more efficient data transfer between processors and accelerators, addressing the growing need for real-time processing and data storage in industries like data centers, communications, and aerospace.
“Our latest addition to the Versal Gen 2 portfolio empowers customers to enhance overall system throughput and optimize memory resources, achieving the highest performance possible,” stated Salil Raje, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD’s Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group. “This innovation is designed to facilitate insightful analyses for the most demanding applications, spanning from the cloud to the edge.”
The Versal Premium Gen 2 excels in host connectivity with high-bandwidth options through CXL 3.1 and PCIe Gen 6, which are much faster than older technologies. By working with AMD EPYC CPUs, system designers can enhance their data-intensive applications and improve memory management.
The System on Chips (SoCs) are engineered to significantly enhance memory bandwidth, tapping into the impressive capabilities of LPDDR5X memory. This advanced technology enables the achievement of remarkable data transfer speeds, which are crucial for high-performance applications. Moreover, these SoCs support CXL (Compute Express Link) memory expansion, allowing for substantial increases in overall bandwidth by enabling the connection of additional memory resources. Looking ahead, AMD is committed to increasing its development tools, with a projected timeline indicating their availability by the second quarter of 2025. Silicon samples, which will allow developers and manufacturers to evaluate the new technology, are anticipated to be ready by early 2026. Production of these cutting-edge SoCs is scheduled to commence in the latter half of 2026, bringing a new era in high-performance computing solutions.
