WhatsApp May Soon Let You Pay Bills Directly Within the App

WhatsApp is gearing up to expand its financial services in India, and its next big move could be bill payments. According to an APK teardown by Android Authority, the Meta-owned messaging giant is developing a feature that will allow users to settle their utility bills directly within the app. The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.3.15, hinting that an official rollout might not be too far off.

    Here’s What to Expect

The upcoming feature is expected to cover a wide range of bill payments, including electricity, mobile recharges, LPG gas, water, landline postpaid bills, and even rent payments. While it remains in the development phase, an empty activity for the feature has already been added to the beta version, indicating that testing could soon commence for select users in India.

This move aligns with WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to solidify its presence in the digital payments space. Back in 2020, the platform introduced UPI-based money transfers for select users, gradually expanding its reach. However, the real game-changer came recently when the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) lifted the onboarding cap for WhatsApp Pay, allowing it to compete head-to-head with giants like PhonePe and Google Pay.

    The Road Ahead

While the exact launch date remains unclear, the beta listing suggests that WhatsApp may initially roll out bill payments to testers before a wider public release. However, the company could face regulatory and logistical hurdles, as integrating bill payments requires approvals from various service providers and governing bodies.

Notably, this isn’t WhatsApp’s first experiment with financial transactions. The platform was previously spotted testing international payments, further indicating its ambition to evolve into a full-fledged financial ecosystem rather than just a messaging app. If this feature sees a full-scale launch, WhatsApp could redefine how Indians manage everyday payments, making it as simple as sending a message.
