Elon Musk’s Starlink to Launch in India With Plans Priced Under Rs. 850 Per Month: Report

Starlink, the satellite internet service backed by Elon Musk, is reportedly preparing to launch in India after clearing most regulatory hurdles. According to reports, Starlink’s India plans could be priced as low as $10 (roughly Rs. 850) per month. As part of initial promotional offers, consumers may be able to enjoy unlimited data plans. With this pricing strategy, SpaceX aims to scale its user base to 10 million quickly, thereby compensating for high spectrum costs through volume benefits.

Starlink Plans in India: What to Expect

Earlier this month, Starlink received a Letter of Intent from the Department of Telecommunication (DoT), allowing the company to initiate satellite communication services in India. A report by The Economic Times mentions that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended an additional charge of Rs. 500 per urban user per month, which could potentially make satellite internet more expensive than traditional wired or wireless broadband.

In addition to this, companies may be required to pay:

    • 4% of total adjusted gross revenue (AGR)
    • Minimum annual fee of Rs. 3,500 per spectrum block
    • 8% licensing fee for offering commercial services

These recommendations, however, are still awaiting final government approval.

Despite the hefty license fees and spectrum charges, Starlink and other satellite communication companies are expected to offer competitive pricing to recover upfront capital expenditure and fixed costs. Starlink’s reported Rs. 850 per month plans with unlimited data in promotional stages could position it as one of the cheapest satellite internet services globally.

What is Starlink and How Much Does It Cost?

Starlink is a satellite-based broadband internet service developed by SpaceX, Elon Musk’s private aerospace company. It delivers high-speed, low-latency internet even in remote and underserved areas using its massive network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, located about 550 km above the Earth.

In the United States, Starlink’s Residential Lite plan costs $80 (roughly Rs. 6,800) per month and includes unlimited but deprioritized data. Users also need to purchase the Starlink standard kit for a one-time charge of $349 (roughly Rs. 29,700).

Additionally, Starlink offers Roam plans for users who are always on the move. The Roam 50 plan starts at $50 (roughly Rs. 4,200) and includes 50GB of data. Users opting for these plans need to buy the Starlink Mini Kit for $299 (roughly Rs. 25,400).

    Conclusion
With its aggressive pricing strategy and cutting-edge technology, Starlink is poised to disrupt the Indian broadband landscape. If the proposed Rs. 850 per month plan with unlimited data comes to market, it could offer a game-changing alternative for rural and underserved regions across India.
