iOS 26: Third-Party Apps Can Now Build Their Own AirDrop

Apple’s strict control over local wireless sharing is finally relaxing. iOS 26 will bring developers a new API that enables third-party apps to find and connect nearby devices using Wi-Fi, without needing an internet connection.

    What Is Wi-Fi Aware

As noted by iHelpBR, the core of this update is Wi-Fi Aware, which allows devices nearby to:

    • Discover one another
    • Establish a direct peer-to-peer Wi-Fi link
    • Connect without being on the same Wi-Fi network

This is the same technology that powers Apple’s AirDrop, but now Apple is making it available to developers.

Here’s what Swetank Saha from Apple said:

With Wi-Fi Aware, you can unlock new experiences and allow your apps to seamlessly discover and connect to nearby devices. Some examples include: media streaming, high-speed file transfer, accessory control, screen sharing, and more all simultaneously if needed.

    How It Works in Practice

In Apple’s WWDC25 session titled “Supercharge device connectivity with Wi-Fi Aware”, Saha demonstrated the real-world process:

    1. Open the app on each device
    2. Detect nearby peers
    3. Tap to connect
    4. Optionally confirm the connection with a code (like AirDrop)

This allows secure, fast, and local connections without relying on the cloud.

    Not Just for File Sharing

While fast file transfers are a key feature, Apple emphasizes that the Wi-Fi Aware API can also support:

    • Screen sharing
    • Streaming media locally
    • Accessory control (e.g., smart glasses, drones)
    • Local syncing and configuration
    • Offline communication without cloud dependency

    Cross-Platform Potential

Because Wi-Fi Aware is an open standard, third-party apps can work beyond the Apple ecosystem. Developers could create apps that:

    • Connect iPhones and Android phones
    • Enable cross-platform file sharing
    • Function across devices running the same app

This isn’t AirDrop for Android, but it’s the closest Apple has come to supporting true cross-platform sharing.

    Is Regulation Behind This Move

Apple hasn’t officially linked this to regulatory pressure, but the timing is telling.

The European Union has urged Apple to:

    • Make iOS more open to third-party apps and hardware
    • Improve local file sharing compatibility

Rather than open AirDrop itself, Apple is offering this new API to meet requirements while maintaining platform control.
