In a major announcement, Microsoft has confirmed that it will end official support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. However, the company also stated that important updates will continue until 2028, offering some relief to millions of users still running the operating system.

    What’s Changing in 2025?

Starting October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide:

    • Security patches
    • Feature updates
    • Technical support for Windows 10

This does not mean the OS will stop working or be completely unsupported. Some key services will continue receiving updates, ensuring limited but essential security and functionality.

Which Services Will Continue to Work on Windows 10?

Microsoft 365 Apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

    • Will receive security updates until October 10, 2028
    • Will continue getting feature updates until August 2026

    Microsoft Defender Antivirus

    • Will keep receiving security intelligence updates through October 2028
    • Ensures protection from new viruses and malware

These updates provide a secure buffer for users who depend on Microsoft’s productivity tools and antivirus software but are not ready to upgrade immediately.

What Should Windows 10 Users Do Now?

While foundational protections remain available, Microsoft strongly recommends upgrading to Windows 11 for:

    • Improved performance
    • Enhanced security
    • Access to new AI-powered features like Copilot

To check if your PC can run Windows 11:

    Go to:

    • Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update, or
    • Use the official PC Health Check tool from Microsoft

    Extended Security Updates (ESU) Program

For users unable to upgrade by 2025, Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program:

    • Delivers critical updates beyond the 2025 deadline
    • Available for a small fee or in some cases free via Microsoft Rewards

    Conclusion

While Windows 10 reaches end of support in 2025, key services like Microsoft 365 apps and Defender Antivirus will remain supported until 2028. Users are advised to start planning their upgrade to Windows 11 to benefit from the latest security, performance, and AI capabilities.
