Tesla is finally rolling into India but not in the way most expected. On Tuesday, July 15, Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company officially opened its first showroom at BKC, Mumbai, marking its entry into the world’s third-largest car market.
But here’s the twist: only six cars have arrived, and they’re not up for sale.
Tesla’s First India Showroom Goes Live at BKC
Tesla has brought in $1 million worth of cars and merchandise, a strategic first step toward tapping the Indian EV segment. This comes despite CEO Elon Musk’s repeated concerns over India’s high import tariffs, which he says are making it harder to sell Tesla vehicles here competitively.
The move marks a long-awaited debut, as Tesla sets its sights on expanding to new markets amidst slowing sales in its more mature regions.
What Tesla Models Are Coming to India?
According to multiple media reports, Tesla’s India operations will start small. The company has exported a limited batch of six Model Y SUVs from its Shanghai factory to Mumbai.
These vehicles are for demonstration and showroom display only, meaning buyers won’t be able to drive one home just yet.
Additionally, the Tesla Model 3 will be showcased at the Mumbai store but again, there’s no confirmation on its sale or availability for the Indian market.
What Is the Tesla Model Y?
The Tesla Model Y is the first EV that the U.S.-based carmaker will retail in India. It’s a mid-size electric SUV, known globally for its efficiency, minimal design, and strong performance specs.
It will be available in:
- Long Range RWD
- Long Range AWD (Dual Motor)
Performance Highlights:
- Range: Up to 574 km on a full charge
- 0 to 100 km/h: Just 4.6 seconds
These specs make it a high-performance SUV for those looking to switch to electric — if and when sales begin.
Tesla Model Y Pricing in India
Customs data accessed by Reuters shows that Tesla has exported six of its top-selling Model Y vehicles to India. Here’s the breakdown:
- Five vehicles shipped at a value of $32,500 each
- One long-range unit priced at $46,000
- The shipment also included Superchargers and other accessories
Due to India’s 70% import duty on completely built-up electric vehicles, the anticipated price of the Model Y could land at around $56,000 (₹47 lakh approx.). That makes it a luxury product, accessible to only a limited segment of Indian buyers.
What Does This Mean for Tesla’s India Plans?
Tesla’s entry into India is a big moment even if it’s symbolic for now. The Mumbai showroom acts as a starting point, allowing Indian customers to experience Tesla vehicles firsthand, even if purchases aren’t possible immediately.
It also signals that Tesla is testing the waters in a market with huge EV growth potential, provided import duties are revised or local assembly becomes viable.
While the cars may be out of reach for most Indians today, this launch could pave the way for future expansion, possibly with locally assembled Teslas if the government and Tesla can reach an agreement.
