Instagram is introducing a major update to its Teen Accounts, setting content visibility based on PG-13 film ratings by default. This means teens under 18 will now experience Instagram the same way they would watch a PG-13 movie viewing mostly age-appropriate content with limited exposure to mature themes.
Instagram Introduces 13+ Default Setting for Teens
All users under 18 will automatically move to the new 13+ content setting, which cannot be disabled without parental consent. Meta says this is the strongest update since Teen Accounts were launched last year and aims to create a safer, more consistent environment for teens online.
The company emphasized that this update was built using feedback from thousands of parents globally. For families wanting even stricter control, Instagram will also roll out a new ‘Limited Content’ mode, allowing parents to filter even more mature or sensitive material from their teen’s feed.
What the PG-13 Standard Means on Instagram
Instagram’s content guidelines have now been refined to align with the PG-13 movie rating system, a standard most parents already recognize and trust. Teens might occasionally encounter light suggestive material or mild language, similar to a PG-13 movie, but Meta says it will keep such instances to a minimum.
The updated rules will go beyond earlier protections that hid sexually suggestive content, graphic imagery, or tobacco and alcohol promotions. The platform will now also restrict exposure to:
- Strong language and explicit terms
- Risky stunts or dangerous challenges
- Content promoting harmful behaviors, including drug-related paraphernalia
A survey conducted by Ipsos for Meta revealed that 95% of U.S. parents found the new settings useful, while 90% said the changes will make it easier to understand what kind of content their teens see on Instagram.

New Protections Across Search, Feeds, and Messages
Meta has also rolled out enhanced AI-driven technology to enforce these updates across multiple areas of the app:
- Accounts: Teens will not be able to follow or interact with accounts that frequently post age-inappropriate content. Similarly, these accounts won’t be able to follow or contact teens.
- Search: Sensitive or mature search terms such as those related to alcohol or gore will now be blocked, even if typed incorrectly.
- Content Experience: Age-inappropriate posts will be filtered from Explore, Reels, Stories, and Feed, even if shared by someone a teen already follows.
- AI Experiences: Instagram’s built-in AI will also adopt PG-13-based behavior, ensuring responses stay within appropriate boundaries.
‘Limited Content’ Mode Gives Parents Extra Control
For families seeking an even stricter experience, Instagram is launching ‘Limited Content’, a parental setting that hides additional content and disables commenting features entirely. It also limits the kind of AI conversations teens can have within the app.
According to Meta, 96% of American parents appreciated having this option regardless of whether they planned to use it.
Ongoing Collaboration With Parents
Meta said that parental feedback continues to shape its teen safety policies. Over the past year, 3 million pieces of content were rated by parents to help define what’s suitable for teens. In recent surveys, less than 2% of posts were rated “not suitable for teens,” suggesting that these new guidelines align closely with parental expectations.
Parents using supervision tools will soon be able to flag any post they feel shouldn’t be visible to teens. These reports will receive priority review, and Instagram will notify parents once the review is complete.
Global Rollout Timeline
The new PG-13-based content settings begin rolling out this week to Teen Accounts in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, with global expansion expected by the end of the year. Meta also plans to extend these protections to Facebook Teen Accounts in the near future.
With this update, Meta aims to make Instagram safer and more transparent for teens, giving parents more control and peace of mind while ensuring teens enjoy a social media experience that feels appropriate for their age group.
