Interview: OPPO’s Goldee Patnaik Talks Brand’s Quiet Shift From Camera-First to Experience-First, And More

In a smartphone market drowning in spec-sheet one-upmanship, standing out today requires more than just bigger numbers and buzzwords. With the launch of the OPPO F33 series, OPPO is attempting to shift the conversation from raw hardware to real-world confidence. It’s a device built not just for benchmark scores, but for the chaos, spontaneity, and demands of everyday life. In this conversation, Goldee Patnaik, Head of Communications, OPPO India, talks about why durability, battery endurance, AI integration, and human-centric imaging are becoming the new battlegrounds for the mid-range segment, and how the F33 aims to redefine what consumers should expect from an affordable smartphone in 2026.

EX: The smartphone market is maturing globally. With the OPPO F33, what is the single technological or experiential shift that you believe will genuinely move the needle for consumers?

GP: The truth about the mid-range segment is that consumers have stopped being impressed by numbers. A 50MP camera or a 5000mAh battery no longer moves anyone, because everyone has one. What consumers are increasingly voting for with their wallets and their word-of-mouth is confidence. Confidence that their phone won’t die before the day ends. Confidence that it survives a monsoon, a drop near the pool, a dusty construction site. Confidence that the selfie they take at a wedding actually looks the way they felt in that moment.

EX: The OPPO F33 addresses all three with a single coherent idea: build a phone that performs at the edges of real life, not just in ideal conditions.

GP: The 7,000mAh battery isn’t a spec, it’s a two-day promise. The IP69K rating isn’t a badge; it’s freedom from anxiety. And the 50MP Ultra-Wide Selfie with a 100° field of view isn’t a camera upgrade, it’s the acknowledgement that the most important photos people take are of themselves and the people around them, and that the frame should be wide enough to include everyone in the moment, not just the person holding the phone. In a maturing market, the shift that moves the needle isn’t the next megapixel milestone. It’s the first time a mid-range phone makes someone feel like they don’t have to be careful with it and still gets every shot.

EX: The F-series has traditionally been associated with camera-first devices. How is OPPO evolving that identity in an era where AI photography and computational imaging are becoming standard across the industry?

GP: The F-series is evolving from being camera-first to experience-first, with imaging still at its core. While AI photography is becoming standard, our focus is on making it more intuitive and useful in real-world scenarios, whether it’s better front-camera versatility, smarter enhancements, or tools that simplify content creation. The idea is not just better photos, but a more seamless and creative imaging experience overall.

EX: What were the three biggest engineering priorities while developing the F33, and how do they translate into real-world user benefits rather than just spec sheet improvements?

GP: The development of the OPPO F33 Series was guided by three core engineering priorities: battery endurance, long-term performance stability, and durability.

With a 7000mAh battery combined with 80W SUPERVOOC fast charging, the goal was to eliminate battery anxiety. For users, this translates into all-day usage across heavy tasks like gaming, video calls, and content consumption, along with quick top-ups that minimise downtime. Features like bypass charging and a 1,800-cycle battery lifespan further ensure reliability over the long term. Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6360-MAX platform built on a 6nm process, along with system-level optimisation and 72-month fluency protection, the device is engineered to remain smooth and responsive even after extended usage. In real-world terms, this means better multitasking, stable performance during intensive tasks, and reduced lag over time, rather than just high peak performance. The 360-degree Armour Body, use of aerospace-grade materials, IP66/IP68/IP69 ratings, and MIL-STD-810H testing ensure the device can withstand drops, water exposure, and varied environmental conditions. For users, it gives them confidence in everyday usage, whether it’s accidental drops, outdoor use, or long-term wear and tear.

EX: Many consumers today are questioning yearly upgrades. What makes the F33 compelling enough for someone using a two-year-old phone to upgrade right now?

GP: For users on a two-year-old device, the F33 offers a meaningful step-up in everyday experience rather than incremental changes. From significantly improved battery life and faster charging to smoother displays and more reliable performance, the upgrade is felt across daily usage. Rather than offering one standout feature, it is more about a complete, balanced improvement that makes the device more efficient, responsive, and dependable over time.

EX: With AI becoming central to the smartphone experience, how much of OPPO’s AI capability is processed on device versus in the cloud, and why was that architectural balance chosen?

GP: At OPPO, we see AI as most impactful when it feels intuitive, responsive, and seamlessly integrated into everyday use. In markets like India, where users are constantly navigating payments, content, communication, and work, AI needs to operate in real time and with minimal friction.

That’s why a significant part of our AI capabilities is designed to run on-device, enabling faster response times, lower latency, and more reliable performance even in dynamic network conditions. At the same time, it is complemented by OPPO’s Private Computing Cloud, enabling more advanced AI capabilities while ensuring data remains secure and private.

Ultimately, we define success by how naturally AI experiences fit into everyday behaviour in a secure and trusted environment. With over 100 million users in India and GenAI features scaled to 100 million+ users globally, our focus remains on making AI feel invisible, intuitive, and genuinely useful across imaging, creativity, and productivity.

EX: What are the key feature upgrades to the F33 series?

GP: The key feature upgrades in the OPPO F33 Series focus on delivering a well-rounded everyday smartphone experience, with improvements across performance, battery, display, durability, and camera. The series introduces a 6.57-inch 120Hz AMOLED display for smoother visuals, a large 7000mAh battery paired with 80W SUPERVOOC fast charging for extended usage and quick top-ups, and the MediaTek Dimensity 6360-MAX platform for reliable performance. It also features a 50MP rear camera system and OPPO’s 360-degree Armour Body durability architecture, enhancing both imaging and device robustness.

It also has a smart auto-switch feature, which intelligently shifts to 0.6x when multiple people enter the frame. In contrast, the F33 comes with a 16MP front camera that is optimised for clear, dependable daily selfies. From a design aspect, the F33 Pro offers premium craftsmanship cues, including Dynamic 3D Depth technology in the Misty Forest finish and a One-Piece Cold Carving build that creates a more seamless rear camera platform. The F33 carries forward the Cold-Carving approach as well, but interprets it differently through a textured finish and visual details like the Luminous Loop design in the Forest Green variant. There is also a difference in configuration and form factor. The F33 Pro offers a higher memory ceiling with up to 12GB RAM for users who want stronger multitasking headroom, while the F33 goes up to 8GB RAM.

Overall, the F33 Series is designed to offer dependable daily performance, long battery endurance, durable design, and a strong front camera experience.

EX: India has become one of the most competitive smartphone markets globally. How does OPPO position the F-series against rivals that are aggressively competing on price and specs?

GP: Smartphone pricing across the industry has seen an upward shift in 2026, largely driven by structural factors such as supply chain constraints and rising component costs, especially with the rapid growth of the AI ecosystem. India is one of the most competitive smartphone markets globally, with brands increasingly competing on price and specifications. At OPPO, we position the F-series by focusing on delivering a balanced, high-quality experience rather than competing on specs alone. Our priority is to offer strong innovation, reliable performance, and a superior user experience that consumers expect from the brand. At the same time, we remain committed to ensuring that the F33 Series stays accessible, striking the right balance between value and overall experience.
