Viral Excapes: Goa in Mercedes-Benz V-Class

When you think about a road trip, you usually think about where you’re going. The destination is the headline, the route is something you have tocover and the hours spent getting there are often treated as the price you pay for eventually arriving. But what if the journey itself could become the destination? That was the idea behind our latest Viral Excapes, where we took the Mercedes-Benz V-Class and a group of four very different personalities into Goa for two days, with one simple objective – to experience the state beyond its usual beaches, parties and tourist checklist.

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class is not a small vehicle pretending to be a luxury car. At 5.37 metres long, with a 3.43-metre wheelbase, it is a substantial machine, and that sheer footprint translates into something you appreciate almost immediately once you’re inside – space. There is room to move, stretch out and actually relax, which becomes particularly important when the road trip isn’t a quick two-hour drive but a proper journey. The V 300 d we drove is powered by a 1.95-litre four-cylinder diesel producing 234 Hp and 500 Nm, paired with a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox and rear-wheel drive. It has the kind of effortless torque that makes moving a large luxury MPV through highways and winding Goan roads feel surprisingly easy.

But the numbers aren’t really what this V-Class is about. Its real party trick is what happens behind the driver.

    FOUR PERSONALITIES. ONE PRIVATE SUITE.

For this Viral Excapes, the passenger mix was deliberately eclectic. Prakriti’s idea of the perfect road trip was somewhere scenic, good food, good company and no rushing. Vivek wanted the right soundtrack, the right people and just enough unpredictability. Sonia admitted that she likes a little planning, but also enjoys seeing where the road takes her. Symran’s non-negotiable was rather more contemporary – her phone.

And then there was me, taking the driver’s seat and looking at four completely different personalities through the rear-view mirror. Okay. Four very different personalities,” I told them. “Let’s see how long we survive together.”The good news is that the V-Class gives everyone enough personal space to make that survival considerably easier.

Mercedes-Benz calls the rear cabin a “private suite”, and after spending serious time in those second-row seats, it becomes difficult to argue with the description. The multi-contour luxury seats can recline, offer ventilation and come with adjustable calf support, while the cabin’s Energizing Comfort functions bring together seat settings, climate control, lighting and sound to create different comfort programmes. There is even a ventilated third row, meaning the luxury isn’t restricted entirely to the two people sitting in the main executive seats. It sounds like a list of equipment until you actually use it. Then it becomes the difference between sitting in a car and spending time in a moving lounge.

    THE ROAD TRIP STARTS HERE

The rain had started coming down outside as we settled in. Inside, the atmosphere was completely different. The seats were reclined, the ventilation was doing its job and the ambient lighting added another layer to the cabin. The V-Class gets 64-colour ambient lighting, while the Burmester surround sound system with Dolby Atmos turns the cabin into a rather serious listening room. For a passenger who has already declared that music is an essential part of a road trip, this is probably the automotive equivalent of handing Vivek the aux cable and hoping for the best.

The MBUX multimedia system sits at the centre of the technology experience, with its widescreen cockpit and voice-control functionality. Navigation becomes particularly useful when you’re exploring rather than simply following a fixed highway route, because this trip was deliberately designed around discovering places rather than rushing between them.

And there is another feature you appreciate on a road trip that isn’t quite as glamorous as massage seats or Dolby Atmos – AIRMATIC. The V-Class uses air suspension with adaptive damping, allowing the system to adjust the vehicle’s behaviour according to conditions and speed. On Goa’s mix of smooth stretches, uneven surfaces and tighter roads, that matters. The V-Class isn’t trying to be sporty. Its job is to isolate the passengers from the road as much as possible while keeping this very large vehicle composed.

Which is exactly what you want when your passengers are trying to have a conversation rather than discuss the condition of the tarmac.

REIS MAGOS – GOA BEFORE THE BEACHES

Our first destination was Reis Magos, on the banks of the Mandovi. The group knew only that we were heading somewhere with more than 400 years of history, which naturally produced a variety of guesses. We arrived at Reis Magos Church, one of Goa’s earliest churches, built in 1555. The church sits at the foot of Reis Magos Fort, which was erected in 1551 at a strategically important point near the mouth of the Mandovi. The fort was built as a Portuguese defence position and later served a variety of purposes.

Standing there in the rain, the contrast was hard to miss. We had arrived in a 21st-century luxury MPV packed with technology and comfort, at a structure that had been standing here for nearly five centuries. And that’s one of the pleasures of driving through Goa. You don’t always have to chase a destination. Sometimes you simply turn down a road and find yourself looking at something that has been standing there for centuries.

“What do you think, beach Goa or this Goa?” The answer, predictably, wasn’t unanimous. But that was exactly the point.

    FINDING FONTAINHAS

From Reis Magos, we moved towards Panaji and into Fontainhas, Goa’s famous Latin Quarter. This is the kind of place where the journey changes pace almost automatically. The roads become narrower, the buildings become more colourful and suddenly the familiar image of Goa disappears.

Fontainhas is known for its Portuguese-influenced architecture, narrow lanes, old villas, projecting balconies and colourful facades. Much of its architectural character comes from homes built in the 18th and 19th centuries, and unlike a museum frozen in time, Fontainhas remains a living residential neighbourhood.

For the V-Class, this was also where its dimensions became very real. At 5.37 metres, this isn’t a car you forget you’re driving. But Mercedes has equipped it with a parking package that includes a 360-degree camera and Active Parking Assist, giving you a much better view of what is happening around the vehicle when negotiating tighter spaces. That becomes particularly useful when your journey takes you away from broad highways and into historic neighbourhoods with narrow lanes and limited room to manoeuvre.

We walked through the lanes, looking at the colours, tiled roofs, balconies and small details that are easy to miss when you’re simply driving through Panaji. The V-Class became our mobile base between locations. Bags went in, phones came out, conversations continued and the journey carried on.

And that’s where the concept of Viral Excapes really came alive. It wasn’t about ticking off attractions. It was about allowing the route to create the story.

THE TECHNOLOGY THAT DISAPPEARS INTO THE EXPERIENCE

There is something interesting about luxury technology when it is done properly. You don’t necessarily notice it working. The V-Class has Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Brake Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST and a driver camera that monitors signs of driver fatigue and inattention. There are also seven airbags in the Extra-Long Wheelbase model. On a long road trip, these systems aren’t there to become talking points every five minutes. They’re there quietly in the background, reducing the workload and adding another layer of reassurance.

The same goes for the electric sliding doors. It sounds like a small detail until you’re getting in and out repeatedly, carrying bags, cameras and whatever else a four-person road trip inevitably accumulates. Press a button and the door does the work.

That is what luxury should increasingly mean – not simply adding more things, but making the things you already do easier.

AGUADA – WHERE HISTORY GETS HEAVIER

Our next stop took us to Aguada, but not simply to see the famous fort. We wanted to explore the Aguada jail and the story behind the site. The Aguada Central Jail was once Goa’s largest prison and continued to operate until 2015. The jail has now been repurposed as a heritage and freedom-struggle experience, telling the story of Goa’s colonial past and its liberation movement.

There is something particularly powerful about arriving at a place like this after spending hours inside a cabin designed around comfort. The V-Class represents an almost extreme expression of modern passenger luxury. Aguada represents a very different side of travel – one that forces you to confront the history embedded in the places we visit.

Goa isn’t just beaches, restaurants and sunsets. It is also churches built in the 1500s, forts built for war, neighbourhoods shaped by centuries of Portuguese influence and buildings that carry memories of a complicated past. And after two days of discovering that side of Goa, there was one final destination.

    PALACIO AGUADA

The road eventually led us to Palacio Aguada, one of Goa’s most extraordinary private estates. Set across five acres overlooking Aguada Bay, Palacio Aguada has ten suites and is designed as a private full-estate experience for up to 20 guests. It isn’t a conventional hotel where you book a room, check in and disappear into your own corner. The entire estate is offered privately, creating something much closer to having a very large, very extravagant Goan home all to yourself.

The property took years to create and has the character of a private residence rather than a conventional luxury resort. Its position overlooking Aguada Bay gives the estate one of those views that makes you instinctively slow down. And after navigating Goa’s narrower lanes, historic roads and some fairly tight corners, arriving at Palacio Aguada felt like the final chapter of the escape.Suddenly, the entire idea of the journey came together.

    TWO PRIVATE SPACES

The Mercedes-Benz V-Class had given us our own private space while travelling. Palacio Aguada gave us our own private space when we arrived.Different spaces. Same idea.

And perhaps that’s what made the V-Class such an appropriate vehicle for this particular ViralExcapes. It isn’t simply about carrying six people. It is about creating an environment in which six people can actually enjoy travelling together.

The 5.37-metre body gives it the physical space. The 3.43-metre wheelbase gives passengers the room to stretch out. The 500 Nm of torque in the V 300 d gives the driver the effortless performance needed to move it around without drama. AIRMATIC works underneath, the driver-assistance systems work around you, while MBUX, Burmester Dolby Atmos, ambient lighting, ventilated seats and massage functions transform the passenger compartment into something closer to a lounge than a conventional MPV.

But specifications alone don’t explain the V-Class.You understand it only after spending a couple of days inside one.

    THE JOURNEY WAS THE POINT

There is a reason road trips continue to appeal even when flying is faster. The point isn’t efficiency. It’s everything that happens between the beginning and the end.

On this Viral Excape, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class made that “in-between” time feel less like travel and more like part of the holiday itself. The group could talk, listen to music, relax, watch the rain, catch up on work or simply stare out of the window while Goa changed around us.And that may be the real luxury of the V-Class.

Not simply that it has more space, or more technology, or more comfort. It is that it gives you back something a road trip normally takes away – time.

We went looking for a different Goa and found it in places that had been standing there long before the modern version of the state existed. We found history at Reis Magos, character in Fontainhas, memory at Aguada and a very different definition of privacy at Palacio Aguada.

But somewhere between all of those places, the destination became less important.Because when the journey itself becomes comfortable enough, interesting enough and memorable enough, you stop asking how long it will take to get there.

You simply enjoy being on the road.
