Race day means something different to every runner. For some, it is about shaving seconds off a personal best; for others, it is simply about making it to their first starting line. Nike is leaning into that diversity with a new race-day system of speed, bringing together three shoes designed around different goals, experience levels and approaches to racing.
At the top of the lineup sits the Nike Apex, positioned as the brand’s most advanced expression of racing speed. It is aimed at runners chasing every possible second and pushing the limits of marathon performance. Alongside it is the Alphafly 4, designed to make marathon speed more accessible by balancing responsiveness, comfort, stability and efficiency over longer distances. The Swooshfly, meanwhile, takes a more approachable route, offering cushioning and confidence for runners stepping into race day, potentially for the first time.

Rather than presenting these shoes as a conventional hierarchy, Nike describes the system as a matter of choice. The idea is to match the footwear to the runner, rather than expecting every athlete to chase the same definition of performance. Each shoe has emerged from a specific runner problem studied at the Nike Sport Research Lab, with the resulting designs tested by athletes before reaching the starting line.
The new system also draws on more than five decades of Nike running innovation, combining proprietary Air Zoom platforms, advanced foams and engineered plates. The focus remains on improving running economy while addressing four key needs: comfort, confidence, efficiency and speed.
The Alphafly 4 arrives in October, followed by the Apex in January 2027 and Swooshfly in February 2027. All three will be available through Nike’s website and select retail locations.
