Design platform Canva has introduced a new feature called Magic Layers, a tool that can convert flat images and AI-generated visuals into fully editable designs inside the Canva editor. The feature allows users to break down static images into separate elements, making it possible to move objects, edit text, and adjust layouts without recreating the design from scratch.
Currently, Magic Layers is available in public beta in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, with the company planning a wider global rollout in the near future.
What are Canva’s Magic Layers?
Magic Layers allows users to upload a flat design file or image and automatically convert it into structured, editable layers inside Canva. Once the image is processed, the tool separates different components of the design into individual objects.
This means elements such as icons, shapes, backgrounds, and graphics can be moved, resized, or edited independently rather than being locked into a single image file.
Another key feature is its ability to restore text as editable text boxes. Instead of manually recreating text from an image, users can directly change the wording, adjust fonts, or modify formatting within the Canva editor.
The feature can also be used across multiple formats including presentations, social media graphics, documents, and other visual content, making it useful for creators, marketers, and designers.
Editing AI-Generated Designs in Canva
Magic Layers also works with AI-generated visuals created inside Canva. Users can generate a design using a prompt and then refine it within the editor.
Once the AI-generated design appears, users can move elements, swap backgrounds, change colours, adjust fonts, or reorganise layouts without having to regenerate the entire image. This makes it easier to fine-tune content while keeping the original design structure intact.
For creators and businesses, this means AI-generated visuals can now be quickly modified and customised, rather than starting from scratch each time.
How Canva Magic Layers Works
According to Canva, Magic Layers uses AI to analyse the uploaded image and identify different elements within the design. The system detects objects, recognises text areas, and preserves the relationships between design components so the overall layout remains intact.
The feature is powered by the Canva Design Model, the company’s proprietary foundation model built to generate and edit visual content.
Unlike traditional tools that simply trace shapes from an image, Magic Layers attempts to understand how different parts of the design relate to each other. This allows users to edit individual elements while maintaining the original structure of the design.
At the moment, Magic Layers supports single-page PNG and JPG files, though Canva has indicated that more capabilities are expected in future updates as the feature expands globally.
