Google NotebookLM Is Testing 30 Minute AI Lectures With New Voices

Google is reportedly developing major upgrades for the audio features of NotebookLM, its AI powered research and note taking platform. According to a report by Testing Catalog, the company is testing a new long form Lecture audio mode that could generate AI created audio sessions lasting up to 30 minutes. Along with this update, Google is also preparing new narration options, including a British English accent expected to arrive in a future release.

Although these features are not available to the public yet, the report suggests Google is aiming to offer users greater flexibility in how they listen to and review research content inside NotebookLM.

    What Is NotebookLM Audio Overview

NotebookLM Audio Overview is an AI powered feature that converts uploaded documents into an engaging audio experience. Instead of a basic text to speech format, it uses AI hosts to explain ideas, connect information from multiple sources and simplify complex topics for easier understanding.

This makes Audio Overview especially useful for students, researchers and professionals who prefer listening while learning or revising lengthy documents.

NotebookLM Audio Overview Update What’s New

According to Testing Catalog, Google is experimenting with a new Lecture format within the Audio Overview feature. This option appears alongside existing formats such as Deep Dive, Brief, Critique and Debate.

Unlike the current conversational approach that uses two AI voices, the Lecture format is designed as a structured narration delivered by a single AI host. The focus is on clarity, continuity and in depth explanation, similar to a classroom lecture or professional presentation.

Long Form AI Lectures Up to 30 Minutes

Testing Catalog reports that when the Lecture format is used with the Long duration option, NotebookLM can generate audio lectures lasting around 30 minutes. These sessions focus on detailed explanations and logical progression while connecting ideas across multiple uploaded sources.

This could be highly beneficial for exam preparation, topic revision, research analysis and understanding complex subjects without constantly switching between documents.

    Language and Accent Options Expected

The report also highlights a language selector linked to the Lecture mode. This suggests users may eventually be able to generate AI lectures in different languages based on their preferences.

Google has also teased new narration options for Audio and Video Overviews. A British English accent has been mentioned as a future addition, with references pointing to a possible release in 2026. This move reflects Google’s broader effort to make AI generated audio feel more natural and personalized.

How the Lecture Mode Could Work

According to Testing Catalog, the Lecture format is expected to follow the same workflow as current Audio Overviews. Users would select their sources, choose the Lecture option and generate the audio session.

This format could be particularly useful for reviewing internal documents, preparing for meetings or listening to research summaries during commutes or travel.

    Availability and Launch Timeline

Testing Catalog was able to generate a sample lecture using available sources to demonstrate pacing and structure. However, since the feature remains hidden and under development, Google has not confirmed a launch timeline.

Final availability, supported languages and narration options may change before the feature is officially released.

    Why This Update Matters

If introduced publicly, the Lecture mode could significantly expand how users interact with NotebookLM. By offering long form structured audio explanations, Google could transform NotebookLM into a powerful learning companion for students, educators and professionals.

As AI driven audio content continues to grow, this update highlights Google’s push toward making knowledge more accessible, flexible and easier to consume on the go.
