OpenAI Adds Mental Health Features to ChatGPT Ahead of GPT-5 Release

OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT with new mental health-focused updates, aligning with the upcoming release of GPT-5 and a rumored low-cost subscription plan. Here’s what users can expect. As part of its commitment to responsible AI development, OpenAI is rolling out a series of features aimed at promoting healthier user interactions with ChatGPT. These updates come at a time when anticipation for GPT-5, the company’s most powerful model yet, is growing rapidly.

    1. Encouraging Breaks and Healthy Use

To prevent excessive screen time and promote well-being, ChatGPT will now nudge users to take breaks during extended sessions. These gentle reminders are designed to ensure users stay balanced in their usage, reinforcing that the chatbot is a tool not a replacement for real-life interaction.

“We build ChatGPT to help you thrive in all the ways you want” OpenAI stated.

    2. Thoughtful Responses to Emotionally Sensitive Questions

When users ask ChatGPT about sensitive or emotionally charged topics such as relationship dilemmas or personal decisions, the AI will now aim to guide reflection rather than provide simple yes-or-no answers. The goal is to support users in weighing options calmly and thoughtfully, without overstepping into the realm of professional advice.

    3. Detecting and Responding to Signs of Distress

OpenAI is improving how ChatGPT detects signs of emotional or mental distress in user inputs. In such cases, the chatbot will be trained to respond with extra care, steering users toward evidence-based resources and, where appropriate, encouraging them to seek support from mental health professionals.

These changes have been developed in consultation with more than 90 medical experts across 30 countries, alongside researchers in human-computer interaction.

GPT-5 Is Coming And It Might Be a Game-Changer

Behind these updates is the much-anticipated GPT-5 model, which OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has described as both impressive and intimidating. In a recent podcast, Altman compared GPT-5’s potential impact to the Manhattan Project, hinting at a major leap forward in AI capabilities.

GPT-5 is expected to push boundaries in speed, reasoning, and versatility, setting a new standard for generative AI models.

New ‘Go’ Plan: A Cheaper ChatGPT Subscription Tier?

OpenAI may also be preparing to launch a more affordable subscription option named ChatGPT Go. Though not officially confirmed, references to the plan were recently discovered in the ChatGPT app’s codebase. If released, this plan could offer budget-conscious users access to premium AI features at a lower price point than the current $20/month ChatGPT Plus tier.

    Other Features in Development

In addition to mental health improvements, OpenAI is reportedly testing several interface upgrades on the ChatGPT web platform, including:

    • Pinned chats for easier navigation
    • Saved favorites to quickly access useful conversations

These tools aim to improve usability and streamline user experience as the platform evolves.

    Balancing Innovation With Responsibility

OpenAI’s latest efforts highlight a growing emphasis on responsible AI use. By integrating mental wellness features and building tools that encourage balanced usage, the company appears focused not only on technological progress but also on ethical deployment.

As GPT-5 approaches, these changes reflect a broader industry trend: powerful AI tools must come with safeguards that protect users emotionally, mentally, and socially.
