In a remarkable case highlighting the growing intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare, a 27-year-old Parisian woman claims that ChatGPT identified signs of blood cancer nearly a year before medical professionals provided the same diagnosis. Here’s what happened.

Woman claims ChatGPT helped her detect cancer

ChatGPT Flags Blood Cancer Symptoms Before Official Diagnosis

In an era where AI tools are becoming increasingly integrated into healthcare conversations, Marly Garnreiter’s story stands out. The young woman from Paris began experiencing persistent night sweats and skin irritation, symptoms she initially attributed to stress, particularly after losing her father to colon cancer.

Despite undergoing routine medical check-ups, all test results appeared normal, and no major health concerns were detected by physicians at the time.

    Turning to ChatGPT for Answers

Still in search of clarity, Garnreiter turned to ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, to describe her symptoms. According to her account shared with People.com, ChatGPT flagged the possibility of blood cancer, a serious suggestion she initially dismissed. Her friends also discouraged her from relying on an AI tool for medical advice.

Diagnosis of Hodgkin Lymphoma Months Later

A few months passed, during which Garnreiter began experiencing increased fatigue and chest pain. A second round of medical consultations led to imaging tests, ultimately revealing a large tumour in her left lung. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer that affects white blood cells.

Now undergoing chemotherapy, Garnreiter expressed her surprise at the AI’s early detection. “I just didn’t want my family to go through this all over again,” she shared, reflecting on the emotional toll of her father’s battle with cancer.

    Early Detection and Survival Rates

While Hodgkin lymphoma is relatively rare, it has a high recovery rate when caught early. Health experts note that the five-year survival rate exceeds 80% for early-stage cases. Common symptoms include chronic fatigue, night sweats, abdominal discomfort, itchy skin, and fever all of which Garnreiter had experienced.

The Importance of Listening to Your Body

As she continues her cancer treatment, Garnreiter hopes her journey encourages others to trust their instincts and seek second opinions when symptoms persist. “It’s really important to listen to our bodies,” she emphasized. “Sometimes we tend to lose our connection with our inner self.”

The Role of AI in Early Medical Symptom Detection

Although ChatGPT and similar AI tools should never replace professional medical advice, this case fuels a growing discussion around the potential of AI in early disease detection especially when traditional diagnostics fall short or delay a clear diagnosis.
