Travelling Eco-Friendly

I started travelling with my family when I was three. Before I knew anything about life, I knew that you could find a home, away from home. Growing up, I fantasized about getting lost in unknown places, stumbling upon secret cafés and bars, meeting complete strangers, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. I knew how significant and liberating travelling was for me, but unfortunately, I never thought about the other side of the story.

A few months ago, when I was in Italy, I was on my dream trip. In the winding streets of a quaint village on Lake Como, our Italian tour guide and I had a conversation that stayed with me. She told me how she loved a job that allowed her to interact with people from all around the world, but she was struggling to make ends meet, especially after the pandemic. Being a local and an independent service provider in the travel industry, she didn’t have the visibility and reach that many other commercial tour operators did.

Before this, I explored every place from a perspective that was obliviously mine. This conversation, as well as many others with Italian locals, opened my mind to who they were, what they go through and how tourism affected them, on a personal level.

Sustainable travelling combines two things that I deeply love: Travel and Conscious living.

When you have an awareness of the environment, people, culture, and economy of the place you are travelling to, you will have an experience that is richer and infinitely more gratifying. Even more so, you will be doing your part in minimizing the negative effects of tourism.

So, how do you go about it?

There are three aspects to sustainable travelling: social, economic, and environmental.

According to ‘The World Counts’, there are 1.4 billion tourists arriving at their destination every year, which comes to 45 arrivals every single second. With so many of us moving around the world, the impact of tourism is substantial and cannot be overlooked.

There are a few, practical ways in which you can be more considerate and responsible as you travel to every place on your bucket list.

Consider the most sustainable form of transport

To reach your destination, depending on how far it is, different transport options may be a more sustainable choice. If you are travelling in a group, sharing a car may be a sensible option, however, if you are by yourself, flying to your destination may be an ideal choice. To explore within a city, always opt for public transport rather than renting a car, for instance.

Pack light and eco-friendly

Packing what is essential and reusable will help you cut back on waste. You can pack a reusable water bottle, reusable bags and containers, for instance, to generate as little waste as possible.

Be a slow-traveller

Don’t rush through life. Savour it. By flying less often and staying longer at destinations, you will not only reduce your carbon footprint but also be able to appreciate each place more profoundly.

Eat Local

Try restaurants, cafes, and bars owned by locals. In this way, you will be supporting local businesses, all the while tasting traditional, authentic and delicious food.

Buy gifts and souvenirs from local shops

To support local artists, manufacturers and shop owners, buy gifts and souvenirs from locally-owned stores.

Choose locally-owned accommodation

Use your money to contribute to the local economy rather than foreign-owned hotels and resorts. You can read up about the accommodation beforehand to know more about who owns and runs it.

Ask questions

The most important thing is to increase your awareness and therefore your accountability to the environment and people. So, don’t be afraid of asking questions, having conversations, and learning new perspectives as you travel.

Sustainable travelling is a simple way to deeply enrich your travel experiences while creating a more conscious, harmonious and considerate world. A way of travelling that has opened my mind, and now, hopefully, yours too.

How the diet industry fails all of us?

How many times has your new year resolution sounded like a weight loss goal? Mine has, almost every year.

For the longest time, the number on the weighing scale dictated how I showed up in the world. By the time I was fifteen, I had already been on Atkins, the Low-carb diet, the Paleo diet, and multiple detox diets, only to gloriously fail at each one. The crippling anxiety and frustration that followed each of these failures became a permanent part of my personality.

What started this madness? A medical condition I didn’t know I had.

I spent years losing my mind, but not my weight, because I didn’t know why I was gaining it in the first place. What boggles my mind is that I wasn’t even interested in finding out.

I knew one thing: I had to lose the weight and if I couldn’t do that, I didn’t deserve to be happy.

In 2021, the global market for weight loss products and services was valued at 254.9 billion dollars. This billion-dollar diet industry has an astounding failure rate of 95%. Interestingly, that is exactly what keeps feeding it.

The success of this industry is directly proportional to the degree you fail at accepting yourself as you are. In a media-saturated world like ours, that leaves no room for imperfection, self-acceptance is nothing but an abstract concept. So, we try, we fail, and we keep coming back.

From a biological perspective, it makes sense why diets don’t work. Our bodies are beautifully complex mechanisms designed to keep us safe at all times. So, when you deprive your body of food, it goes into survival mode. While your mind understands that you are on a diet, the body believes that you are in danger and you need to eat everything you can to survive. Inevitably, all you can think about is food. Sound familiar?

It is not uncommon for occasional dieters to find themselves developing serious eating disorders over time. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, global eating disorder prevalence increased from 3.4% to 7.8% between 2000 and 2018. As of today, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. In the pursuit of an unattainable and ever-changing standard of beauty, sometimes we end up doing irreversible damage to our bodies.

So, what are we chasing?

If self-acceptance is the goal, it is never found in the numbers on a weighing scale. If optimal health is the goal, it is never found in a diet fad or a weight loss supplement.

What creates lasting change is the ability to listen to your body and give yourself the validation you crave from others. Can you imagine what would happen to the billion-dollar diet industry if we were all to do this?

Rainy & Dripping – Monsoon Wardrobe Essentials

There is something oddly lazy about the rainy weather: the sound of raindrops lashing against the window sill and heavy clouds lugging across the somber grey tones of the morning sky. While this makes for a perfect stay-in, stepping out can feel like a traumatizing experience. The last thing on your mind is deciding what to wear, but it is also something that can dramatically change the course of your day.

Colours

The gloominess of a rainy day calls for brighter colors that can significantly improve your mood. However, wearing white is a vehement no. White clothes can be easily stained and ruined in weather like this. Your best bet would be opting for darker hues of any color you choose to keep your attire functional. That being said, don’t hesitate to have fun with an orange shirt or a funky yellow umbrella to brighten up your day just a tad.

Fit

Humidity is a frequent visitor in the wet season. To make your clothing comfortable in this time, you can opt for loose fits like a shirt dress. When it comes to bottoms, you can go for relaxed-fit jeans or culottes. Comfort should be a priority at all times, but especially so when the weather is unpredictable.

Prints and Patterns

If you are anything like me, floral prints will effectively lift your mood on a gloomy day. Tropical or animal prints can be a great choice for an otherwise dull day. An exotic print balanced with a silhouette shirt, for instance, would make for a brilliant choice.

Additional Tip:

The best addition to a rainy-day outfit is a pair of comfy shoes or sandals that help you navigate slippery surfaces that are inevitable on a rainy day. Also, invest in a trench coat for a fashionable and useful addition to your monsoon wardrobe.

Monsoon Must-Haves

Waterproof tote bag: This makes for a smart yet fashionable choice to keep your belongings dry and safe at all times.

Ultralight Raincoat: There is nothing like a raincoat to make your outfit practical and stylish during the monsoons.

Waterproof Boots and Socks: To keep your feet warm and dry, a pair of waterproof socks and boots will work wonders.

Umbrella: Needless to say, you must always carry an umbrella. Always.

Things to avoid

  1. Stay as far away from leathers and suedes as you can.
  2. Keep your georgettes and chiffons safely tucked away in your wardrobe.
  3. Avoid long outfits and bottoms.
  4. Keep in mind you may have to maneuver muddy waters, and you don’t want to ruin a perfectly good pair of wide-leg pants.

Fashion, in every way, should be a tool to allow you to show up as your best self. It is always a game-changer to dress according to the season and choose outfits that feel comfortable and, at the same time, elevate your style quotient.

Let’s Talk About Veganism

This will change the way you think, speak and consume food.

Let’s talk about veganism.

I know every argument that a meat-eater makes when I start this conversation.

“But meat tastes so good”

“You know plants feel pain too”

“Eating animals is very natural”

“Animals are supposed to eat other animals”

…and these are just few of them.

So, I hear you and I can tell you that you will feel differently when you finish reading this article.

Statistically speaking, as of 2021, there are approximately 79 million vegans in the world which covers only 1% of the global population. This means that the diets of 99% of the world contain either meat, animal-based products or both. To satisfy this demand, approximately 200 million land animals are slaughtered around the world every single day. Let’s boil this down a bit.

By the time you finish reading this sentence, 267789 animals will be killed globally for food.

There is no denying that these numbers are staggering but it is important to remember that these numbers are made of individual lives. Each individual life that is brutally taken for the short-term sensory pleasure of someone eating a tuna sandwich for lunch, simply, because they really like the taste of meat.

Raised as a vegetarian, I was curious about what made meat so appealing to everyone. So, for a certain while I joined the club and tried everything under the sun: chicken, fish, lamb, and cows. When I decided to go vegan, it wasn’t because I didn’t enjoy the taste of meat, it was because the taste was no longer justifying the moral and environmental implications of killing animals.

Some people argue that human beings are designed to eat meat. Evolutionary evidence suggests that humans have evolved to be omnivorous, which means that we can eat both plants and animals. However, this isn’t because humans are designed to eat meat but because humans are designed to adapt. We are always responding to our surroundings and over time, for reasons of survival which don’t hold true in today’s times, we began hunting and eating animals.

Let me ask you a simple question: Do you think animal cruelty is wrong?

Most people will say yes. Yet, these people will continue consuming animal-based products without giving it a second thought. Why is that?

It seems that eating meat, for most people, is an unconscious choice, a thought-less action, motivated by habit or temporary gratification.

Today there is a lot of scientific evidence suggesting that pain and the way in which it is sensed is awfully similar across humans and mammals because we share the same nervous system, neurochemicals, and emotions which are integrated into the experience of pain.

This is not the case with plants. Plants do not have a brain or a central nervous system which makes them incapable of feeling anything.

If pain is a part of the food-making process, pain becomes a part of the food-consumption process.

On a molecular level, what we consume becomes a part of us. The saying goes, “We are what we eat” and as overused as it is, undeniably, there is scientific, energetic, and spiritual truth to it.

I am aware that I cannot get anyone to stop consuming animal products if they don’t choose to. I am also aware that starting a conversation about things that matter invite people to broaden their perspective and take a long, hard look at the choices they are making on a day-to-day basis.

In this way, we are all doing our parts in making the world just a tad better and that is a huge step forward.

Enabling the Smartphone Future

The global pandemic has triggered digitization at an unprecedented rate in India, with the country becoming a leading mobile-first consumer economy1. As smartphone prices cease to be prohibitive, the smartphone user base is expected to reach 829 million in 2022, accounting for 60% of the population, which will represent 38% of all networked devices in India this year2. Today, India ranks second in the world for the number of smartphone users.6

Smartphones are playing a pivotal role in bridging the divide between urban and rural India and improving digital literacy- they are offering access to education, healthcare, banking, and other vital services. In fact, during the most severe lockdowns, smartphones and internet access were central to keeping children connected and educated, especially in rural and remote parts of the country.  People are turning to their phones both for enrichment as well as entertainment.

The Photographer in Us

Smartphones have dramatically changed our lifestyles and have become our go-to devices. People in India spend around five hours a day on these devices on average, and are one of the world’s highest data consumers per day—even surpassing China3. After all, digital natives turn to smartphones for work, play, and nurturing hobbies. Phone cameras offer rich 4K resolution today, and several new devices bring 8K video recording. These innovations have turned many people into amateur photographers and content creators, capturing and documenting our lives. However, at the same time, this means that unless we have the right level of storage, we have to make the debilitating decision of deleting our memories in order to create new ones.

Today, dedicated storage devices are developed especially for mobile content creators, such as SanDisk® Dual Drives, which can be used to enhance mobile storage by up to 1TB5 and offer ease of moving content between various compatible devices. Moreover, dedicated storage is available both for AndroidTM and iOS devices. This simple plug-and-play device allows us to continue the pursuit of the best picture and capture our precious moments without worrying about the lack of storage space. Other options are available too, such as microSDTM cards and external SSDs, that offer phenomenal transfer speed and can be plugged directly into smartphones that feature a card slot.

Booming Mobile Gaming

Thanks to the smartphone penetration in the country, mobile gaming has also become a mass phenomenon and is competing with other popular entertainment categories, such as short-form video, streaming services, and social networks for user attention. With one out of ten gamers across the globe being in India, it is the fifth-largest mobile gaming market globally4. Even an entry-level smartphone today comes packed with more power and features. As a result, affordable yet powerful smartphones are one of the critical enablers of this massive boom in mobile gaming. Additionally, easy access to various game titles has also aided the popularity of mobile gaming. For example, many casual games are ‘Pick Up and Play’, usually available as a free download and monetized by ads. These also attract casual gamers looking for no-obligation games to pass the time.

Hardcore gamers can easily access the games of their choice from almost unlimited title options and play immersive multiplayer games, which are gaining traction. While immersive and graphically taxing titles are becoming popular, these take up a lot of space on the device, which can hamper the gameplay in the absence of the right storage. The storage should be designed to avoid the lagging graphics that can slow the game down. For example, the microSDTM card, in addition to offering ample space, should also offer high-performance speeds to support demanding game graphics and 4K ultra-HD video.

Smartphones have changed our world and have become a crucial part of our lives. However, these devices will become inhibited without storage.

The Biggest Upcoming Technologies of 2022

The beginning of every New Year is no doubt exciting for a variety of reasons. However, among these reasons, is the unveiling of new technologies. This unique opportunity creates a unique platform for companies far and wide to introduce what they will be working to launch in the upcoming year. It also provides each company a unique look into what their competitors are trying to get out there.

Whether you use this platform just as an observer or a competitor, it is hard not to be left oohed and awed by some of these technological adventures. Here is just a shortlist of some of the most exciting things tech companies are working toward this New Year.

3D Home Printing

Could the old methods of home-building be about to change forever? What if you could do away with your hardhat and toolbelt and wear a suit and tie while carrying a briefcase to work every day? This might not be a sacrifice everyone is willing to make, but 3D home printing technology could forever change the world of homebuilding. You’d be surprised at just how applicable it is to feed concrete, sand, and plastics into massive 3D printers.

You might be surprised by this, but you likely be even more surprised at how cost affordable this solution is. It might end up even being less costly than the older, traditional ways of building homes. There is, however, one thing still holding the industry back. That is the lack of infrastructure to transport printing materials to parts of the world where they would be most impactful.

Self-Fertilizing Crops

When you look at all the wealth in the world, it is almost hard to believe that there are still suffering and struggling out there. Indeed, there are entire countries and regions of the world lacking, but it just seems like some people have so much. Not only this, but you combine all this excess with the waste that goes on today, and the fact that there is one starving person in the world seems kind of ludicrous. That might be about to change. And it won’t have anything to do with less spending or less wasting.

It will be thanks to self-fertilizing crops. Most people just don’t realize how harmful current farming practices are. With the use of massive commercial fertilizers, nitrogen and other harmful chemicals are just eating away at the earth daily. Nitrogen is a highly used crop production chemical that accounts for 1 to 2 percent of yearly, global carbon dioxide emissions.

While nitrogen has proven to be an effective fertilizer, it is also doing untold harm to the world.

A world that is in limited supply. Soy plants and members of the legume family like peas and lentils might be about to transform the entire industry. Scientists are already immediately working on getting corn and other cereals to self-fertilize.

Advancement Of Cryptocurrencies

Cryptocurrencies have been a slowly trudging technology that’s for the most part stayed on the fringes of mainstream finances. Consumers have seen this shift a bit in the online sports betting market. So, it is possible to play สล็อตแตกง่าย ฝากถอน ไม่มีขั้นต่ำ with specific digital currencies.

There are now a few online platforms willing to accept and payout in cryptocurrencies. Some e-commerce sites also accept digital currencies.

El Salvador has just recently become the first country in Central America to make Bitcoin the most popular cryptocurrency in the world.

Sweden, Canada, The European Union, and The United Kingdom are already a few of the global leading giants that are considering implementing financial changes. Unfortunately, there are some still not embracing this digital currency and all the potential it offers, but that could possibly change in 2022. It is the concerns and potential risks for digital fraud in countries like China, Bangladesh, Qatar, Egypt, and Morocco that have been deterring many.

Anti-Aging Drugs

Who doesn’t want to stay looking and feeling like a teenager? It seems these hopes and dreams might come to fruition in the upcoming years. At least the part about looking like a teenager.

While there are plenty of exciting and ground-breaking things going on in modern medicine, it seems that anti-aging medications are the exclusive talk of the town.

The first wave of new class anti-ageing drugs has already been shipped out and implemented in controlled testing environments. While these medications are not yet designed to make one live longer, they remove certain cells that accumulate during the aging process.

Apple 15-inch MacBook Air, 12-inch MacBook reboot, and more in the pipelines for 2023

Apple’s current line-up of MacBooks with Apple Silicon is extremely powerful, ranging from the entry-level MacBook powered by the M1 to the Mac Studio super-powered by Apple’s M1 Ultra and the Cupertino-based tech giant is showing no signs of slowing down.

In a recent report by Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, his sources claim that a 14-inch MacBook Pro and its bigger 16-inch counterpart are on their way with the second generation M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, with up to 12 CPU cores and 38 GPU cores. The report also identifies a 15-inch MacBook Air by 2023. This would be ideal for users looking for a larger screen but not needing the overhead performance, not to mention heavy pricing on the 16-inch Pros.

Furthermore, Apple is also reportedly looking at reviving the 12-inch MacBook with Apple Silicon. This is said to be priced below the M1 MacBook Air’s $999, with the aim to attract more customers to the Mac with a more affordable and compact option. However, the last time Apple announced a 12-inch MacBook, it was plagued with performance issues, battery life, and heating – all of which were effectively resolved with the improvements in Apple’s in-house silicon. However, there would likely be a complete redesign to the problematic keyboard that resulted in several lawsuits against Apple, motivating them to change it for the last two generations of computers.

Nevertheless, the future of the Mac is exciting. As Apple exercises its liberty with the form factor and designs of its new computers, it will continue to keep the industry on its toes to stay competitive.
