Transhuman Tomorrow: Exploring the Evolution of Humanity

The concept of transhumanism has been gaining momentum in recent years, sparking debates and discussions about the potential future of humanity. Transhumanism, in essence, is the belief in using advanced technology to enhance and evolve the human condition beyond its current biological limitations. It envisions a future where humans merge with machines, surpassing natural abilities and achieving unprecedented levels of intelligence, longevity, and even physical prowess. As we stand at the threshold of technological advancement, it is crucial to explore whether the future is truly transhuman and what implications this transformation might have for society.

The Drive for Enhancement

Humanity has always sought ways to enhance its capabilities. From the invention of the wheel to the development of the internet, our relentless pursuit of progress has led to remarkable achievements. Transhumanism represents the next logical step in this journey. With rapid advancements in fields like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and nanotechnology, we are on the cusp of achieving feats that were once relegated to the realm of science fiction.

One of the most intriguing aspects of transhumanism is the idea of merging humans and machines. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are at the forefront of this movement, allowing direct communication between the human brain and computers. This technology has the potential to revolutionize fields such as medicine, enabling paralyzed individuals to regain mobility and people with neurological disorders to regain their independence.

The Pursuit of Immortality

One of the most audacious goals of transhumanism is the pursuit of immortality. Through genetic engineering, regenerative medicine, and other cutting-edge technologies, proponents of transhumanism aim to extend human lifespans indefinitely. While this concept may seem far-fetched, significant progress has already been made in understanding the ageing process and finding ways to slow it down.

However, the pursuit of immortality raises profound ethical questions. How would society grapple with the consequences of a population that never dies? Would it exacerbate existing inequalities? And how would we reconcile the philosophical and existential aspects of our mortality? These are questions that must be addressed as we contemplate a transhuman future.

Challenges and Ethical Dilemmas

The path to a transhuman future is fraught with challenges and ethical dilemmas. Privacy concerns, for instance, become paramount when we consider the integration of BCIs and other invasive technologies into our lives. Who would have access to our thoughts and personal information, and how would this impact our autonomy and individuality?

Moreover, the potential for a technological divide between the enhanced and the unenhanced is a pressing concern. Access to these transformative technologies could become a privilege reserved for the wealthy, further deepening societal inequalities. It is essential to establish ethical guidelines and regulations to ensure that transhumanism benefits all of humanity rather than a select few.

The Human Experience

As we contemplate the future of transhumanism, we must also reflect on what it means to be human. Will the integration of technology into our bodies and minds fundamentally change our essence? While proponents argue that enhancing our abilities and extending our lifespans align with our inherent drive for self-improvement, the flip side also brings about the worry that we may lose something essential in the process – our humanity.

The future may indeed be transhuman, with technology offering us the potential to enhance our physical, cognitive, and emotional capacities. However, as we embark on this transformative journey, we must approach it with caution and a keen awareness of the ethical, social, and philosophical implications it carries. Striking a balance between technological progress and preserving our humanity will be the defining challenge of the transhuman era. In the end, the path we choose will determine whether this future is a utopia or a dystopia, and it is our responsibility to shape it wisely.

Xiaomi X Series 65-inch (L65M8-A2IN) Review: Bigger & Affordable

Televisions have evolved to become an integral part of our lives. While some users are glued to the screen enjoying their favourite shows and movies, others prop up their living room with a television that compliments their aesthetics. However, one thing I thoroughly appreciate about television in the last decade is that they have become accessible. A buyer can now spend as little as 9-10K to get a TV up in his room, on the other end of the spectrum we also have TVs which cost upwards of 10 Lakhs. Xiaomi however, has always played its cards right offering feature-packed Smart TVs at an affordable price. The latest in the roster is the Xiaomi X Series 2023 variant. This time around, Xiaomi is offering the X Series TV at the massive 65-inch option which simply stuns with its superior picture quality. So at ₹61,999, is this the television you should be going for? Let’s find out –

Design

With the latest X-series, Xiaomi sticks to the tried and tested design aesthetic. It is a pretty standard design which does not scream premium but surely is minimalistic. The design is pretty much synonymous with the previous X series TVs. There is only a single colour option (Black) and I stand firm on the belief that Xiaomi should introduce TVs with a wide range of colours now, it’s high time! Xiaomi’s logo is placed right at the centre which is not a distraction in any way. The bezels around the screen are slim and do not bother the viewer while watching films, etc. However, the bottom bezel is slightly larger than the others. The television isn’t entirely slim but not thick to the point where it’s a hindrance. We tested the TV using the in-box plastic stands which hold their ground really well. The remote also maintains pretty much a standard Xiaomi design. During our interaction with a Xiaomi India spokesperson for the briefing of this television, we recommended Xiaomi integrate a better remote design for future televisions. Let’s see if that comes to fruition in the near future.

Performance

Xiaomi clearly does not like to experiment when it comes to the software experience of its televisions. While some might call that playing it safe, I call it playing with sense. The singular software experience across all its televisions builds a UI language that has become synonymous only with Xiaomi TVs and no other brand. The Xiaomi TV X-Series is powered by a quad-core processor powered with 2GB of RAM. The internal storage available here is also just 8GB with 4.3GB available for users. This surely works for people who stick to a few mainstream streaming applications. People keen on side-loading third-party app stores and downloading heavy games to test them out will not exactly have a pleasant experience.

A 65-inch TV is definitely Xiaomi’s flagship offering and 2GB RAM does not ring flagship in any sense. Additionally, having more space would also be beneficial. The UI works smoothly and shifting between apps will not be a hassle for users, at least until they don’t load up the storage with apps. The software here is the latest Google TV UI which is patched along with the Patchwall. Google TV’s features like Assistant and Chromecast work without any issues.

Thanks to home entertainment reaching its full potential due to the pandemic, there is a lot of UltraHD and high-dynamic content readily available on streaming services for viewers to enjoy. I watched hours’ worth of content on the immersive 65-inch screen of this television which left me truly stunned. Mission Impossible: Fallout was the one film that looked the best as it took advantage of the entire screen real estate using a bigger aspect ratio in certain scenes. Watching shows like Taali & Barry on JioCinema was also a surprisingly delightful experience given the streaming service is notorious for having a low bitrate even for 4K content. UHD content was the sharpest to watch, however, some details looked washed out. Watching series/films in a well-lit room with natural light was also not a hassle at peak brightness. The speakers here provide 30W of sound output. We do not get support for Dolby Atmos from this set of speakers. However, the TV is loud, crisp and clear even at moderately low volumes. The latest Patchwall+ service which brings a traditional cable TV experience to the smart TV is definitely a welcome addition.

Patchwall+ Interface

Verdict

Xiaomi X-series 65-inch is one of the best affordable big-size TVs you can buy right now. It brings a classy minimalistic design coupled with a powerful performance for a complete package.

Beyond Impulse – The Science of Scoring the Ultimate iPhone Deal

When it comes to acquiring the latest in technological marvels, few names resonate as powerfully as the iPhone. The allure of cutting-edge features, enhanced performance, and an unrivalled user experience can be irresistible. However, the seasoned consumer knows that a well-timed purchase can make all the difference between a savvy investment and a less-than-ideal expenditure.

A cardinal rule in the realm of iPhone acquisitions is to exercise patience during the months of July and August. This is not a whim but a calculated manoeuvre stemming from Apple’s pattern of unveiling its newest iPhone iterations in September. The rationale is simple yet profound: the imminent launch of new models triggers a domino effect, driving down the prices of their predecessors.

The art of precision extends beyond mere timing. It’s not just about when but also about how. The impulse to seize the latest iPhone hot off the press might not always yield the best outcome. Contrary to common assumption, the sweet spot for acquisition is sometimes right after the curtain rises on the new model. A prudent course of action involves allowing a brief interlude—perhaps a month or two.

However, the realm of shrewd iPhone procurement harbours more than just temporal considerations. As the calendar turns, strategic shopping events come to the fore, beckoning the discerning buyer. Think about the October shopping extravaganza and the legendary Black Friday. These moments in retail offer a glimmer of hope to those hunting for a deal on the cherished device. But, let it be known: while these occasions might tantalize with discounts, the latest iPhone incarnations typically remain sheltered from steep price reductions.

Apple’s modus operandi in pricing strategy has proven itself to be a symphony of timing and tactics. The price tags of newly minted iPhones seldom witness a significant plummet within their debut year. Instead, Apple employs a subtle dance, often stepping back on the cost of the previous year’s model when its successor is unveiled. This captivating performance typically graces the stage in September, with potential encores in the spring.

In summation, the pilgrimage for the most opportune iPhone purchase entails a delicate minuet through the annals of time. With their promise of blooming possibilities, the festival time often delivers the best chance to embrace the latest iPhone incarnations. For those with an appetite for a slightly more seasoned vintage, the siren calls of Black Friday might beckon with alluring offers.

In the grand tapestry of iPhone acquisitions, let the months of July and August serve as a cautionary tale, a vivid reminder of the impending harvest of new models and the subsequent cascade of price adjustments. Ultimately, as seekers of the perfect iPhone deal navigate the shifting tides of opportunity, one truth stands resolute: timing, in all its nuanced glory, reigns supreme in the realm of the discerning buyer.

Silent Spies – How to Guard Your Devices from Acoustic Side-Channel Attacks?

The pursuit of having a less stressful life has led us to Artificial Intelligence. However, it has only drawn us into the infinite loop of stress. At first, AI took over the jobs, and now, to make things worse, it is being trained to steal data from keyboard keystrokes. With 95% accuracy, it could leak your passwords, messages, or other sensitive information to malicious third parties.

What is an acoustic side-channel attack?

Devices like computers, smartphones, and IoT devices can generate acoustic signals as byproducts of their normal operations. With that in mind, a group of British researchers has trained a deep-learning model that can tamper data by manipulating the sounds of the keystrokes to determine what keys are being pressed. The cyberattack is now called an acoustic side-channel attack.

By analysing these sounds, hackers equipped with the right tools can potentially infer details about the internal operations of a device, such as keystrokes, cryptographic keys, or other confidential data being processed. For instance, the rhythmic pattern of keystrokes or the noise generated during specific computational tasks might provide clues about what actions are taking place on the device.

Acoustic side-channel attacks can be carried out remotely or locally, and compared to other security breaches, acoustic side-channel attacks are easy to perform, thanks to the abundance of microphone-bearing devices that can capture high-quality audio like a pro. Local attacks require the attacker to have physical access to the device, enabling them to place specialised sensors or microphones directly on the device.

How to save your devices from getting attacked?

Mitigating acoustic side-channel attacks requires implementing security measures that reduce unintended sound emissions, such as isolating sensitive components, employing noise-cancelling techniques, or using secure hardware designs that minimise acoustic leakage. You can also replace the physical keyboard with an on-screen keyboard while typing sensitive information on the system.

Here are a few suggestions you can take to mitigate the risk of such attacks:

  1. Limit physical access to your devices Prevent unauthorised individuals from physically accessing your devices, as attackers might implant acoustic sensors to capture sound emissions.
  2. Increase ambient noise – Play background music or use white noise generators to make it difficult for attackers to isolate and interpret the acoustic signals emitted by your devices.
  3. Isolate devices – Position your devices to minimise the propagation of sound waves. For instance, you can place your laptop on a soft surface to dampen vibrations.
  4. Disable unnecessary hardware – Turn off microphones and other sensors that aren’t needed for your work to minimise the potential for acoustic data leakage.
  5. Control your environment – Be cautious when discussing sensitive information in places where acoustic attacks might occur, such as public spaces or areas with thin walls.
  6. Keep software up to date – Ensure that your operating system and applications are up to date with the latest security patches to mitigate potential vulnerabilities that could be exploited in acoustic attacks.
  7. Stay informed – Keep up-to-date with the latest research on acoustic side-channel attacks and other emerging threats. This knowledge will help you adapt your protective measures as needed.

ViewSonic LS610HDHE Projector Review: Sets a New Standard!

It was only at the start of this year that I reviewed ViewSonic’s X2 projector. It took me by surprise to how many features that projector managed to pack in a small form factor. When I was tasked to review the ViewSonic LS610HDHE projector, the excitement went above the roof as I was expecting another smart Android-based projector from the company. However, to my disappointment, the LS610HDHE projector is a pretty standard affair which does not cramp up features. It takes a different approach of being a projector suited for classrooms, boardrooms, and similar settings. So, is the ViewSonic LS610HDHE not worth exploring? I beg to differ as it definitely stands in a league of its own when it comes to picture quality.

Design & Features

ViewSonic LS610HDHE is rated to produce 4,500 ANSI lumens and comes with Full HD resolution at 1920 x 1080. For a business and education projector, it weighs pretty light and it won’t be an issue for users to move this one around. It also boasts some high-end features like HDR, HLG and 4K signal support. When it comes to the design, the ViewSonic LS610HDHE does not innovate in any sense but presents a known design aesthetic which was not an issue for me in any way.

What comes with the 4,500 ANSI lumens is the capacity for the projector to cut through ambience lighting and present some sharp images even in the brightest settings. Testing the projector out in a dark room was a grave mistake I made as its brightness prowess nearly blinded me for a second. What users also get here is a maintenance-free sealed light engine which keeps dust and moisture away from the lens.

Performance: Beyond Impressive

One of the few reasons why people opt for projectors is to get the best picture quality out of their films and series. On the performance side, the ViewSonic LS610HDHE is one of the best projectors you can buy right now. It not just produces a sharp picture quality but takes it a notch further by allowing users to choose between multiple color modes. Users get to choose between Brightest, Standard, Photo, Movie, User 1 and User 2 options. The ‘Brightest’ color mode has a green tint to it and is suitable only for ambiences with plenty of light. I found myself sticking to either standard or movie mode during my testing of the projector.

LS610HDHE houses a standard control panel on the top which allows users to quickly play around with the settings. It houses a power button and keystone buttons coupled with color mode, menu, source, and more. There is also a handheld remote control which gets the job done with ease.

The projector also houses a standard 10W speaker system which works well enough given it’s not the premium Harman Kardon speaker system which the X2 boasted. The projector can handle 4K content generally but downscales it to 1080P. I watched films like Avatar: The Way of Water & Spider-Man: No Way Home during my testing of the projector and I was glued to the superior picture quality of it.

Verdict

If you’re in the market looking for a capable projector and do not obsess over smart Android features which modern projectors offer then the ViewSonic LS610HDHE is definitely the one for you. It produces some punchy colours which can be enhanced furthermore using the color management features.
