The 1990s was a defining decade for cinema. These films, a curated list with various genres, are mind-bending, thrilling and surprisingly, independently produced. Furthermore, they were chosen as audiences and critics alike unanimously agreed that these were the decade’s best films. We couldn’t add every film made in the 90s that has gained a significant cult following. However, I can guarantee that these films will change your perspective on cinema as well as life itself.

Here are our choices for the best movies from the 90s

    Pulp Fiction (1994)

    Genre: Crime/Thriller

Directed by Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction is an iconic film that redefined how storytelling should be shaped, especially with its non-linear narrative. The movie intertwines multiple storylines involving mobsters, amateur criminals, and a mysterious briefcase. With its witty dialogue, memorable characters, and iconic soundtrack, Pulp Fiction became a cultural phenomenon. Tarantino’s status as a master filmmaker began here. You might see one or more people wearing a Pulp Fiction-inspired t-shirt on the street.

    The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

    Genre: Crime/Thriller

Based on Stephen King’s novel The Shawshank Redemption, Frank Darabont’s adaptation is an emotional anecdote of hope and friendship set in Shawshank prison. Tim Robbins stars as Andy Dufresne, a banker wrongly convicted of murder, and Morgan Freeman plays Red, another inmate. The film’s effective narrative and powerful performances have made it a beloved classic for movie buffs.

    Schindler’s List (1993)

    Genre: War/Drama

Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List is a brutal depiction of the Holocaust. Based on the true story of Oskar Schindler, it depicts how he, despite being a German businessman working for the Nazi regime, saved over a thousand Jewish refugees by employing them in his factories. The film’s stark black-and-white cinematography, powerful performances, and Spielberg’s direction make it a deep and moving historical epic.

    Titanic (1997)

    Genre: Romance/Adventure

James Cameron’s Titanic is an epic romance film that became the highest-grossing one of its time. While it begins with roses and rainbows, we all know the fate of the Titanic was a tragedy. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as the lead couple, the movie tells the woeful love story of Jack and Rose aboard the ill-fated Titanic. Known for its breathtaking visual effects and emotional soundtrack, Titanic won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

    The Matrix (1999)

    Genre: Action/Sci-Fi

Directed by the Wachowskis, The Matrix is a sci-fi action film that shaped the genre to where it is today. With its innovative special effects, including the revolutionary “bullet time” technique, the film has become a favourite of sci-fi fans. Starring Keanu Reeves as Neo, the film explores themes of reality, control, and freedom within a dystopian future. You quickly find out the humans are unknowingly trapped in a simulated reality. I’m sure almost everyone has tried to do the bullet dodge move for fun, too. If you want to get into sci-fi, The Matrix is a must.

    Forrest Gump (1994)

    Genre: Comedy/Romance

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, Forrest Gump stars Tom Hanks as the titular character, a kind-hearted man with a low IQ who unknowingly influences key historical events in 20th-century America. The film’s blend of drama, comedy, and historical commentary earned it widespread acclaim and multiple Academy Awards. Hanks’ charming performance as Forrest gave him critical acclaim, and it is a film that stays in our hearts. It also blends romance into it with a key love interest, Jenny (Robin Wright) whom he never stops loving throughout his life.

    Goodfellas (1990)

    Genre: Crime/Thriller

Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas is a gritty yet stylish portrayal of life in the mob, based on the true story of Henry Hill. It shows that despite all the odds and expectations, Hill makes it, but at what cost? With an ensemble cast featuring Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci, the film presents an unflinching look at the rise and fall of a gangster.

    Jurassic Park (1993)

    Genre: Adventure/Sci-Fi

Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park brought dinosaurs to life and the big screen with CGI ahead of its time and animatronics, setting a new standard for visual effects. As we all know by now, Jurassic Park follows a group of scientists and visitors as they face genetically resurrected dinosaurs in a theme park. Its blend of adventure, suspense, and outstanding visual effects made it a landmark in film history. Jeff Goldblum, with his charm and wit, is also a highlight of the film’s action-packed adventure.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

    Genre: Horror/Crime

Directed by Jonathan Demme, The Silence of the Lambs is a chilling thriller that features one of horror’s most iconic villains, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins. Jodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling, an FBI trainee seeking Lecter’s help in capturing a serial killer. The events she goes through are chilling to the bone. The film’s gripping narrative, psychological depth, and stellar performances earned it five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It’s a must-watch for horror enthusiasts.

    The Lion King (1994)

    Genre: Family/Adventure

Disney’s The Lion King is an animated musical directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. The story of Simba, a young lion destined to be king, has captivated audiences for ages to come. Even today, we see adaptations and even a famous Broadway musical. Featuring memorable songs by British rock star Elton John, breathtaking animation, and a compelling narrative, The Lion King is a beloved classic. It also blends grief and recovery with the tragic death of Mufasa, and the sheer shock on Simba’s face could never be replicated. Of course, this was proven in live-action, where the shock of Mufasa’s death was not nearly as hard-hitting. Like most Disney films, Simba goes on a fun adventure to find himself and where he belongs in his pack. A message we could all use.
