The Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 9 is a well-rounded mid-tier gaming laptop priced starting at ₹129,940. Does it got a blend of high performance, sleek design, and portability? We will analyze its features and performance to provide an in-depth understanding of this laptop.

Here are the Features of Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 9 Gaming Laptop

Design, Build and Display

The Legion 5i Gen 9 has a modern and refined grey finish body with both Lenovo and Legion branding on top, giving it a sense of style. The aluminium chassis not only adds a premium touch but also ensures durability. However, as a result, it contributes to its weight, tipping the scales at about 2.36 kilograms. This may be a lot to carry along on a journey. The keyboard is highly regarded for its robust build, ample key travel, and per-key RGB lighting, all of which significantly boost the gaming experience. Additionally, its larger form factor accommodates a dedicated numeric keypad, a valuable inclusion for this laptop. However, the trackpad may feel slightly undersized due to the integration of full-sized arrow keys, a minor compromise in exchange for improved productivity.

The laptop is equipped with a high-resolution 16-inch WQXGA (2560×1600) IPS display featuring an impressive 165Hz refresh rate, which is sufficient for an RTX 4060 GPU laptop. This display delivers vibrant colours and smooth FPS, which is perfect for gaming and content creation. With a 16:10 aspect ratio, the screen provides additional vertical space, enhancing productivity and creating a more immersive gaming experience. However, the display’s 350 nits of brightness might feel slightly dim when used in brightly lit environments, impacting the overall viewing experience.

Performance

lenovo legion 5i specs

The Legion 5i Gen 9 is equipped with the latest Intel Core i7-14650HX processor, featuring 16 cores and 24 threads, paired with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 GPU. This configuration ensures good gaming performance and multitasking capabilities. It only comes with 16GB of DDR5 RAM, but it can be expanded by adding another single RAM module to get it to 64GB if a user needs it. It also has a 1TB SSD, providing fast load times and a seamless gaming experience.

During our testing, we found that the laptop excelled in various tasks such as work, content creation, and gaming. It handled work-related activities effortlessly, showing no lag, even when running over 30 Chrome tabs concurrently with Microsoft Word and playing YouTube videos. However, when pushing it to over 60 tabs, the 16GB RAM capacity was fully utilized, resulting in noticeable delays when switching between applications.

For content creation, applications like Premiere Pro and VN Editor ran smoothly, allowing for easy editing of video content, including reels. When it came to gaming, the laptop truly shined. I tested a few demanding first-person shooter titles, such as Call of Duty Warzone and Battlefield 2042, achieving around 80FPS+ at medium settings. The frame rate dipped slightly when pushed to ultra settings, falling below 60FPS. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 proved to be a capable graphics card, delivering a satisfying gaming experience at medium settings on a 2K+ display. Additionally, with DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) enabled, we experienced a significant improvement in FPS without compromising game quality.

Connectivity and Battery Life

The laptop is equipped with a wide range of ports, including three USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, a 3.5mm audio jack, an Ethernet port, a microSD card reader, and a dedicated physical camera key for added convenience. Additionally, it supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.1, ensuring fast and reliable wireless connectivity. The 80-watt-hour battery provides decent battery life and supports fast charging, although extended periods of heavy gaming may necessitate frequent access to a power source.

Audio and Additional Features

The device is equipped with a dual 2W speaker system featuring Nahimic Audio, which is designed to provide high-quality, clear, and immersive sound for an enhanced audio experience. However, for gaming, we primarily use a gaming headset to play FPS games more accurately. In addition, it comes with a built-in 1080p webcam that delivers decent quality for video calls and live streaming, ensuring sharp and detailed visuals.

Verdict

The Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 9 is not a top-end gaming laptop but delivers decent performance for gaming and productivity tasks. Its premium build quality, vibrant display, and ample connectivity options make it a strong contender in the mid-end to high-end gaming laptop market. While it is heavier, its performance and features justify the heft for those seeking a powerful portable gaming solution.
