Electronic Arts (EA) has apparently cancelled the Black Panther game, which it had been developing in association with Marvel, as per a report by gaming-focused outlet IGN. In addition, the American video game publisher has reportedly closed Cliffhanger Games, the studio it had established specifically to produce the title.
Black Panther Game Development Halted
Since its original announcement in 2023, not much information has been released regarding the Black Panther game aside from the fact that it is a single-player game with an original story, developed in collaboration with Marvel Games.
EA Internal Memo Reveals Reason
According to the report, an email sent to staff from EA Entertainment president Laura Miele stated that these changes, along with other recent cancellations and layoffs, are being made to:
“Sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”
Miele also expressed her sentiments on the difficult decision:
“These decisions are hard. They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”

EA and Marvel’s Partnership Remains Intact
As IGN notes, the Black Panther game was part of a three-game deal between Marvel and EA, which includes Iron Man and another still-to-be-announced title. Despite the cancellation, the partnership will continue, with Motive Studios taking the lead on future Marvel games.
In a statement to IGN, Miele reaffirmed:
“Our partnership with Marvel remains strong and our multi-title, long-term collaboration continues.”
Continued Layoffs and Restructuring at EA
The cancellation comes amid a wave of job losses and canceled projects at EA, especially throughout 2025. Just last month, EA reportedly laid off approximately 300 staff, including nearly 100 from Respawn, and also cancelled a Titanfall game along with another incubation project.
According to the report:
- Earlier in 2025, EA reorganized BioWare, leading to employee relocations and dismissals.
- In 2024, a significant company-wide reorganization resulted in 670 job cuts, including about two dozen at Respawn.
- In 2023, BioWare experienced 50 job cuts, with further unspecified reductions at Codemasters.
