Instagram has rolled out a new feature called “Your Algorithm”, designed to give users more control over the Reels recommendations they see. The update, announced through Instagram’s official blog, focuses on helping users understand why certain Reels appear in their feed and allows them to fine-tune these suggestions based on their evolving interests. The feature is currently available in the US and will be launching globally in English soon.
What Is Instagram’s ‘Your Algorithm’?
The new tool is integrated directly into the Reels tab. When users watch a Reel, they will notice a small icon in the top-right corner two lines with hearts. Tapping this opens the Your Algorithm panel, where Instagram provides an AI-generated summary of the topics it believes match the user’s interests.
This summary can include categories such as:
- Creativity
- Sports
- Fashion
- Food
- Other topics users engage with regularly
Instagram also allows users to share this interest summary as a Story, similar to how users share their Spotify Wrapped results.
How the Feature Works
Below the interest summary, Instagram displays a list of personalised topics that influence the user’s Reels feed. Here’s what users can do:
- Choose topics they want to see more of
- Mark topics they want to see less of
- Add new topics manually if something they enjoy isn’t listed
These inputs help Instagram refresh and refine the user’s Reels suggestions instantly. Instead of relying solely on broad categories, users can now personalise their feed with much more accuracy.
More Control Coming Soon
Instagram describes this tool as the first step in giving users clearer, more transparent control over how recommendations work. While Your Algorithm currently focuses on the Reels tab, the company plans to expand it to the Explore tab and other sections of the app. The goal is to enable users to shape their overall Instagram experience rather than depending entirely on automated recommendations.
