As 2026 begins, skywatchers around the world are preparing for a spectacular celestial lineup. February will mark the first of four eclipses scheduled for the year, featuring a rare annular solar eclipse on February 17, 2026. Popularly known as the “Ring of Fire” eclipse, this event promises a breathtaking view for observers in select parts of the world.

During an annular solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun but appears slightly smaller due to its greater distance from Earth. As a result, the Sun is not completely covered, creating a glowing ring of sunlight around the Moon’s dark center. At its peak, nearly 96 percent of the Sun will be obscured.

Annular Solar Eclipse 2026: Date and Time

    • Eclipse Date: Tuesday, February 17, 2026
    • Eclipse Begins: 03:26 pm (IST)
    • Eclipse Ends: 07:57 pm (IST)

Will the February 2026 Solar Eclipse Be Visible in India?

No, the annular solar eclipse on February 17, 2026, will not be visible in India. Since the eclipse does not occur during daylight hours over the Indian subcontinent, viewers will miss the event directly.

However, astronomy enthusiasts in India can still experience the eclipse through live online streams, including coverage provided by NASA and other space agencies.

Regions Where the Annular Solar Eclipse Will Be Visible

The “Ring of Fire” solar eclipse will be visible in parts of:

    • Southern Africa
    • Far southern South America
    • Most of Antarctica
    • Zimbabwe
    • Namibia
    • Tanzania
    • Mauritius

Observers in these regions will be able to witness the Moon forming a luminous ring as it passes in front of the Sun.

What Is an Annular Solar Eclipse?

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is at its farthest point from Earth during its orbit. Because the Moon appears smaller in the sky, it cannot completely block the Sun. Instead, the Moon covers the Sun’s center, leaving a bright outer ring visible.

This striking visual effect is known as the “Ring of Fire”, making annular eclipses especially fascinating for astronomers and eclipse watchers alike.

When Is the Next Solar Eclipse After February 2026?

Following the February event, the next solar eclipse of 2026 will take place on August 12, 2026, offering another opportunity for sky enthusiasts to witness a celestial spectacle.
