ChatGPT has announced the introduction of a new agent called ChatGPT Work, designed to enhance productivity by taking action across various applications and files. This new feature can engage with complex projects for extended periods and assist users in transforming goals into completed tasks. ChatGPT Work is powered by the latest advancement in the AI model family, GPT-5.6, which includes three versions: Sol, Terra, and Luna.
The recent updates highlight that ChatGPT Work integrates the capabilities of Codex across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. This integration allows it to gather context from chosen apps, files, and workflows, facilitating the creation of various finished materials such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and web applications.
Additionally, a new desktop application combines the functionalities of ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. This unified interface aims to provide users with everyday assistance and support for complex multi-step tasks, alongside functionalities tailored for developers and technical professionals.
The rollout of ChatGPT Work and the desktop application features a centralized plugins directory that connects ChatGPT to popular tools such as Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, and various CRMs. New features include Scheduled Tasks to help manage recurring work and an in-app browser designed to aid deeper engagement with websites and local applications.
The GPT-5.6 model family, including Sol, Terra, and Luna, will be available across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API. The Sol model is particularly noted for its enhanced intelligence and efficiency, delivering improved performance across coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity, and scientific tasks while utilizing fewer tokens and lowering costs. Key improvements include better reasoning for multi-step tasks, the introduction of an “ultra mode” for maximum performance, and enhancements in artifact quality for presentations and documents.
The new desktop application is now rolling out for Mac and Windows users globally, including those on the Free tier. Work features are set to become available on web and mobile platforms for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users in the coming days, with Plus and Business tiers to follow.
The rollout is expected to take place over the next 24 hours, with Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users gaining access to the Sol model for medium to high-effort tasks, while Pro and Enterprise subscribers can select GPT-5.6 Pro for more demanding workloads.
