Lenovo Launches Revolutionary Cooling Technology to Enhance AI Computing Efficiency

At its annual Tech World innovation event, Lenovo unveiled its latest advancement in data center technology, the ThinkSystem Neptune, a sixth-generation vertical liquid cooling solution. This groundbreaking innovation promises to enable organizations to harness accelerated computing for generative AI while cutting data center power consumption by up to 40%.

During the event, Lenovo further strengthened its collaboration with NVIDIA by announcing the Lenovo Hybrid AI Advantage, which launches alongside the ThinkSystem SC777 V4 Neptune. This new system utilizes the innovative ThinkSystem Neptune architecture, providing the foundation for deploying NVIDIA Blackwell and expanding the availability of trillion-parameter AI models in a compact design tailored for enterprise needs.

As the demand for AI technology rises, data centers require re-engineering to accommodate higher thermal densities. Lenovo’s ThinkSystem Neptune and SC777 V4 Neptune are at the forefront of this shift, enabling server racks capable of exceeding 100KW without the necessity for specialized cooling systems. This innovation represents a significant step towards optimizing data center designs to support increased hardware density and more efficient power usage.

“Lenovo has spent over a decade leading the charge in liquid cooling technology to deliver high-performance computing to organizations of all sizes,” stated Yuanqing Yang, Lenovo Chairman and CEO. “The ThinkSystem Neptune is set to redefine data center efficiency and design, allowing unprecedented access to NVIDIA Blackwell and massive AI models, while fundamentally transforming power utilization in data centers.”

Key features of the ThinkSystem Neptune include a fully liquid-cooled system that relies on a redesigned vertical cooling chassis, maximizing power for AI computations rather than cooling systems. This design eliminates the need for traditional power-hungry fans, providing accelerated computing capabilities in standard 19-inch racks for organizations of any scale.

Bob Pette, NVIDIA’s Vice President of Enterprise Platforms, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “The NVIDIA Blackwell platform is engineered to propel generative AI and instigate a new industrial revolution. With Lenovo’s ThinkSystem Neptune and NVIDIA solutions, we can support the most advanced tech-driven workloads while drastically reducing operational costs and energy consumption.”

The ThinkSystem SC777 V4 Neptune is compatible with next-generation NVIDIA Quantum-X800 InfiniBand and Spectrum-X800 Ethernet platforms, facilitating high-performance accelerated networking. Additionally, it supports the NVIDIA AI Enterprise software, streamlining the development and deployment of production-grade AI solutions across various domains, including generative AI and computer vision.

Lenovo’s commitment to advanced water cooling technology allows critical components to operate at lower temperatures, effectively dissipating heat from GPUs, memory, I/O, and storage. This design enables AI training and real-time inference for models scaling up to 10 trillion parameters, enhancing performance and energy efficiency within a compact, quiet system.
