Nikon has unveiled the Nikon ZR, a cutting-edge compact cinema camera, at the Broadcast India Show 2025 held at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai. The ZR, part of Nikon’s Z CINEMA series, is the company’s first professional cinema camera developed in collaboration with RED Digital Cinema.

The Nikon ZR delivers cinematic-quality video in a compact, all-in-one design, featuring internal 6K RAW recording, RED R3D NE codec support, and the world’s first in-camera 32-bit float audio recording, empowering filmmakers and content creators to capture professional-grade visuals and audio without heavy rigs.

Speaking about the unveiling of ZR, Mr. Sajjan Kumar, MD, Nikon India said, “We are thrilled to unveil the Nikon ZR, our first-ever cinematic camera developed in partnership with RED, at Broadcast India Show 2025. This marks a proud milestone for Nikon as we enter the cinematic space, empowering creators to bring their vision to life with unmatched precision and versatility. The ZR is more than a camera—it’s a revolution in cinematic storytelling, designed to meet the evolving needs of our customers and redefine what’s possible on screen.”

    Built for Cinematic Storytelling

The Nikon ZR offers nine RED-curated Imaging Recipes that can be previewed in real time. It supports seven video formats, including 12-bit RAW for maximum post-production flexibility. Key recording modes include:

    • 6K/59.94p and 4K/119.88p 12-bit RAW in REDWideGamutRGB and Log3G10
    • Internal RAW recording in R3D NE, N-RAW, and ProRes RAW HQ
    • Waveform, histogram, and LUT overlays for precise monitoring
    • Configurable shutter angle from 5.6° to 360° for cinematic motion blur
    • Deep-learning autofocus with up to nine subject detections, including people, animals, and vehicles

The 4-inch vari-angle LCD allows LUT monitoring and supports up to ten 65-point LUTs and additional 17 & 33-point LUTs for color precision, making it ideal for narrative, broadcast, OTT, and live productions.

    Compact Yet Powerful Design

Weighing just 540 grams, the ZR is among the lightest cinema cameras in its class, with a dust- and drip-resistant magnesium alloy body. Designed to replace multi-component rigs, it offers:

    • Internal 6K RAW video capture
    • Dual Base ISO (800/6400) for optimal exposure
    • Direct cloud uploads via Frame.io through NX MobileAir
    • Efficient heat dissipation for over 2 hours of silent, continuous recording

    Pro-Level Audio for Live & Multi-Cam Workflows

The Nikon ZR integrates 32-bit float audio recording with a 3.5mm jack and OZO Audio with five pickup patterns, delivering broadcast-quality sound without external recorders.

Alongside the ZR, Nikon introduced the ME-D10 shotgun microphone, which is wireless, battery-free, and compatible with the ZR’s digital accessory shoe. It offers PURE and FOCUS modes for natural ambience or precise voice capture.
