After a brief delay, Google has officially rolled out Android 17 Beta 1 to select Pixel devices on February 13. Instead of launching a separate Developer Preview, the company moved directly to the public beta phase, giving users early access to upcoming features.

The update focuses on large screen improvements, performance optimisation, better security, and smoother cross device functionality.

Here is everything new in Android 17 Beta 1 and the full list of eligible devices.

Android 17 Beta 1 What Is New

    Mandatory Large Screen Adaptivity

Android 17 now makes large screen optimisation compulsory for developers. Apps targeting Android 17 can no longer opt out of resizing or orientation changes on foldables and tablets.

This means a better and more consistent experience on devices like the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.

    Optimised Configuration Changes

The system will no longer restart app activities by default during certain configuration changes. This prevents state loss and improves overall stability.

    Lock Free Message Queue

A new lock free Message Queue implementation reduces missed frames and improves performance. Users may notice smoother animations and better multitasking.

    Notification Size Restrictions

Google has introduced strict size limits for custom notification views. This helps reduce memory usage and improves device efficiency.

    Camera Session Improvements

The camera experience has been upgraded. Users can now switch between photo and video modes without fully restarting the camera session. Output surfaces can also be attached or detached without glitches.

    Constant Quality Video Recording

Android 17 introduces a constant quality mode for video encoding in Media Recorder. This allows better control over video recording quality.

    Background Audio Hardening

Audio playback, focus requests, and volume changes will silently fail if an app is not in a valid lifecycle state. This strengthens system stability and prevents misuse.

    VVC Support

Android 17 adds platform support for Versatile Video Coding H 266. This improves compression efficiency and helps reduce file sizes while maintaining quality.

    Android Advanced Protection Mode

Google has introduced an optional Advanced Protection Mode for users at higher risk of targeted attacks. Once enabled, it:

    • Blocks app sideloading
    • Restricts USB data access
    • Enforces Google Play Protect scanning

This feature provides stronger security safeguards while allowing supported apps to adjust automatically.

    Handoff Feature

A new Handoff feature allows users to move an app activity from one Android device to another seamlessly. Supported apps can resume the same task on a nearby device either within the app or through a web link, improving cross device continuity.

Android 17 Beta 1 Eligible Devices

The update is available for the following Pixel devices:

    • Pixel 6
    • Pixel 6 Pro
    • Pixel 6a
    • Pixel 7
    • Pixel 7 Pro
    • Pixel 7a
    • Pixel 8
    • Pixel 8 Pro
    • Pixel 8a
    • Pixel 9
    • Pixel 9 Pro
    • Pixel 9 Pro XL
    • Pixel 9 Pro Fold
    • Pixel 9a
    • Pixel 10
    • Pixel 10 Pro
    • Pixel 10 Pro XL
    • Pixel 10 Pro Fold
    • Pixel Tablet
    • Pixel Fold

How To Get Android 17 Beta 1

Google confirmed that users already enrolled in the Android Beta Program and currently running Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2.1 will automatically receive the Android 17 Beta 1 update. There is no need to re enroll.

Devices that remain enrolled will continue to receive future beta builds.

However, Google warns that reverting to a stable version usually requires a full device reset until the beta cycle ends, which is expected around June 2026.

Users who do not want to test Android 17 should exit the beta programme through Google’s official website and wait for the stable Android 16 QPR3 release.

Android 17 Beta 1 clearly focuses on improving large screen usability, strengthening security, and enhancing performance. If you own an eligible Pixel device and want early access to upcoming features, this beta update could be worth trying.
