Apple is rumored to be working on a significant redesign of its Shortcuts app, and the changes could be powered by its in-house Apple Intelligence with a new suite of AI features for the iPhone, iPad, and other Apple devices.
Shortcuts App Overhaul Expected at WWDC 2025
In the most recent edition of the Power On newsletter, veteran tech journalist Mark Gurman revealed Apple’s ambitious plans to revamp the Shortcuts app. The update is expected to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, which begins on June 9 at Apple Park in California.
This move is reportedly part of Apple’s broader strategy to embed AI functionality deeper into its native apps and operating systems.
AI-Driven User Experience
According to Gurman, the new Shortcuts app will allow users to create personalized automations using Apple Intelligence models. Users could interact with natural language to perform actions such as playing a specific music playlist or launching a task streamlining workflows through AI-powered shortcuts across devices like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
While Apple plans to preview the overhaul at WWDC 2025, Gurman notes that public availability might be postponed until 2026, despite earlier expectations for a 2025 release.
Third-Party Developer Access and Apple Intelligence Expansion
On a broader scale, Apple is also expected to open its foundation AI models, reportedly comprising around three billion parameters, to third-party developers at WWDC 2025. This would empower developers to leverage on-device AI capabilities currently used for features like text summarization and other light processing tasks.
This access could catalyze the creation of additional AI-driven features within the Apple ecosystem.
Siri and Health App Overhaul
One of the headline features in Apple’s AI initiative is a revamped Siri, now powered by large language models (LLMs), promising a much more conversational experience bringing it in line with ChatGPT’s Voice Mode.
Additionally, Apple is said to be working on an AI physician service codenamed Mulberry, which could be introduced alongside a redesigned Health app. These updates are expected as part of a spring refresh for iOS 26.
Moreover, Apple is also rumored to be developing a chatbot to rival ChatGPT, capable of retrieving data from the web and delivering smart, contextual responses.
