Apple is making a major shift in its global supply chain. For the first time ever, all four models of the upcoming iPhone 17 series will be manufactured and shipped directly from India, moving away from its traditional reliance on China.
Apple Expands Manufacturing in India
According to Bloomberg, five Apple suppliers in India have already ramped up production, including two new facilities that recently went live. Foxconn, Apple’s largest manufacturing partner, is leading the charge, alongside Tata’s Hosur factory in Tamil Nadu and another Foxconn facility near Bangalore Airport.
This marks the first time Apple will launch its entire flagship lineup including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the rumored iPhone 17e with units produced and exported directly from India.
Why Apple Is Moving Away from China
For years, nearly all iPhones sold in the US were manufactured in China. However, with rising geopolitical tensions, trade uncertainties, and tariff challenges particularly from US trade policies Apple has been diversifying its production base.
While iPhones currently remain exempt from the new 50% US tariff on Indian imports, Apple is preparing for potential policy changes by increasing its reliance on India as a strategic manufacturing hub.
Indian Exports Surge with iPhone Production
The impact of this shift is already visible. Since April, India’s iPhone exports have touched $7.5 billion at factory prices, setting the stage to surpass last year’s record of $17 billion. Industry insiders suggest Tata could manage up to half of Apple’s iPhone shipments from India within the next two years.
What’s Next for Apple in India
Apple isn’t stopping at the iPhone 17 lineup. Reports suggest that production of a lower-cost iPhone 17e will begin in India early next year. There are also early signs that groundwork for the iPhone 18 has already started, with even greater volumes expected to be produced in the country.
Boost for Apple and Foxconn
Foxconn’s Q2 earnings have already received a lift thanks to steady iPhone 16 sales, supported by discounts in China and pre-tariff rush orders in the US. Analysts believe that the iPhone 17 launch, with Indian manufacturing at its core, will further strengthen Foxconn’s performance in the consumer electronics segment.
