The long-awaited iMac update is here, with Apple having kept the design unchanged for the most part. The big new addition is, of course, the M4 chip, which brings unbridled 3nm performance to the all-in-one. This Apple Intelligence-supporting iMac gets updated Type-C accessories as well, but those hoping for the Magic Mouse to receive a new location for its charging port are in for a big disappointment.
The much-criticised location of this charging port has been unanimously called a big design blunder, but Apple has surprisingly chosen to stick to it instead of a redesign. Owing to this, users of the Type-C port-equipped Magic Mouse will still need to stop using it every time it’s being charged.
Apple 24-inch iMac (2024): What’s New?
- The addition of the M4 chip results in a 1.7x uptick in performance compared to the iMac with M1. And its new GPU means that the M4 handles more intense workloads like photo editing and gaming up to 2.1x faster than the iMac with M1.
- It has a base RAM of 16GB, which is configurable up to 32GB.
- The iMac will be offered in seven vibrant colours that will be matched by the Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse accessories that will be offered with them. Even the optional Magic Trackpad accessory can be bought in a matching colour. Green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver are the available shades.
- There’s no change in the display itself – you will still get a 24-inch 4.5K Retina panel – but it can now be paired with an optional nano-texture glass aimed at reducing reflections and glare. Getting this nano-texture coating will cost an additional Rs 20,000.
- A new 12MP camera has been granted to the iMac, offering support for Apple’s Desk View and Centre Stage functionalities.
- As for ports, all four of the device’s Type-C inputs support Thunderbolt 4 for superfast data transfers. This means there’s support for up to two 6K external displays. The iMac is also equipped with support for Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and Touch ID.
Price and availability
Pre-orders for the new 24-inch iMac are now live, with deliveries slated to commence on November 8. The base model of the all-in-one, which offers an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU configuration on its M4 chip, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, costs Rs 1,34,900.
Potential buyers can also opt for a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU version of the M4, paired with either 16GB+256GB or 16GB+512GB configurations. These will be priced at Rs 1,54,900 and Rs 1,74,900, respectively. There’s even a full-specced model with the 10-core M4 that comes with a 24GB+1TB pairing and costs Rs. 1,94,900.
