Apple Vision Pro to Receive Native Support for PlayStation, Xbox and Spatial Controllers With visionOS 26: Report

Apple is preparing to unveil its annual operating system (OS) updates at WWDC 2025 next week. Rumors so far have focused on a significant overhaul to come to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, concerning their interface and naming approach. Still, this does not indicate that Apple ignores visionOS, which will run the Apple Vision Pro. There is a report that the mixed reality headset would be improved by having increased support for peripheral gamepads like PlayStation, Xbox, and spatial controllers.

Expanded Controller Support in visionOS 26

    • visionOS 26 will add greater controller support beyond its present abilities to the Apple Vision Pro.
    • The spatial headset purportedly leverages native support for PlayStation and Xbox controllers.
    • Although it currently supports these peripherals, developers have not fully utilized them yet.

“Controller Required” Badge on App Store

    • A special “controller required” badge will appear on the App Store for Vision Pro games needing a dedicated controller.
    • visionOS 26 will also alert users at the time of purchase if a title requires a PlayStation, Xbox, or MFi-certified controller.

    Spatial Controllers for Motion Awareness

    • Apple will introduce support for spatial controllers, commonly used for AR and VR interactions.
    • These input devices track orientation and 3D positioning.
    • Users will be notified if a game they purchase requires spatial controllers with motion awareness capabilities.

    Apple’s Increasing Investment in Gaming

    • This move reflects Apple’s growing focus on gaming.
    • In the past year, Apple enabled wired Xbox controller support across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
    • At WWDC 2025, Apple is rumored to unveil a dedicated Game app for launching games, tracking achievements, and user activity.

Discussions With PlayStation for VR2 Support

    • Apple is said to have held talks with PlayStation about integrating PlayStation VR2 controller support on Vision Pro.
    • The company is also encouraging third-party developer participation in enabling VR2 compatibility.

    Conclusion

The upcoming visionOS 26 update hints at Apple’s serious push into immersive gaming experiences on the Apple Vision Pro. With native support for major gaming controllers, and planned integration of spatial input, Apple aims to transform its headset into a versatile gaming platform. These features, along with a potential Game app, could redefine how users engage with games in mixed reality environments.
