Apple’s long-standing ambition to redefine the smart home experience might soon take a tangible turn. While rumours of a futuristic, desk-wandering smart hub with a robotic arm have been swirling for a while, Cupertino may be switching gears with a more grounded launch first. According to trusted insider Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is preparing to unveil a more accessible version of its smart home hub later this year, stripped of some of the flashier bells and whistles but packed with enough smarts to make an impression.
The entry-level device, reportedly codenamed J490, is expected to feature a 7-inch tablet-style display, accompanied by a front-facing camera, built-in speakers, and a battery. Think of it as a compact, square iPad that doubles as a control centre for your smart home. What’s more intriguing is the software under the hood. It’s said to debut with homeOS, Apple’s latest operating system that blends elements of watchOS and the iPhone’s StandBy mode, suggesting a user experience that’s both familiar and intuitive.
This AI-powered hub is being described as a “wall tablet with personality”, tailored to support Apple Intelligence, the tech giant’s growing AI initiative. From controlling smart appliances to delivering contextual updates and perhaps even hosting FaceTime calls from your kitchen wall, the device is poised to become a central fixture in the Apple home ecosystem.

But make no mistake, this isn’t the final act. Apple’s grander vision, dubbed J595, remains on the horizon. That’s the much-talked-about version with a robotic arm that can shift and swivel across your desk, possibly offering an interactive and animated AI experience. Though development has slowed, it hasn’t been abandoned. Gurman reports that Apple is eyeing a launch timeline “a year or two later” for this more ambitious variant.
In a space dominated by Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Nest, Apple has so far remained curiously cautious. But with this upcoming smart hub, the company appears ready to step into the fray. While details are still under wraps and plans may evolve, one thing is clear: Apple is gearing up to bring its signature blend of design, intelligence, and ecosystem integration into the heart of your home. And this time, it’s not just another screen, it’s potentially the beginning of a new way to live with Apple tech.
