The partnership between Donald Trump and Elon Musk started strong but quickly deteriorated into a very public and bitter dispute. Here’s how their relationship went from allies to adversaries in just a few months.
The Start of Trump-Musk Alliance
Their alliance began in July 2024, right after an assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. Elon Musk showed immediate support, tweeting, “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery.” Musk didn’t just stop at words as he joined Trump’s campaign trail, even wearing a custom “Make America Great Again” hat.
Once Trump became president, Musk took on a new role as an unpaid presidential advisor under the “special government employee” category. Musk was very vocal about his admiration for Trump, stating in February 2025, “I love @realDonaldTrump as much as a straight man can love another man,” on X (formerly Twitter).
During Trump’s early administration, Musk became the public face of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), aggressively pushing for cost-cutting reforms.
The Fallout Begins
Despite praising Musk as “one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced” at his last Oval Office press conference on May 31, 2025, Trump’s relationship with Musk began to crumble soon after.
Musk started criticizing the Trump administration’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” calling it a threat to federal finances and the reforms he championed with DOGE. On June 3, Musk tweeted, “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination.”

The Breaking Point
Tensions reached a peak on June 5, when Trump accused Musk of undermining the bill because it removed electric vehicle tax credits, a move seen as damaging to Tesla’s profits. Trump told reporters, “Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will any more.”
He added, “I’m very disappointed in Elon. He knew every aspect of this bill. He knew it better than almost anybody, and he never had a problem until right after he left.”
Musk responded quickly on June 6, denying Trump’s claims: “This bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!”

Later that same day, the dispute took a personal turn. Musk accused Trump of having connections to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, writing, “Trump’s name is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.” Musk ended his post with a sarcastic “Have a nice day, DJT!”
