Apple is claimed to be working on fresh MagSafe chargers that would support faster wireless charging on the next-series iPhone devices. According to a report, the development charging pads were listed on a certification website and could be Qi2.2 charging standard compliant. Although these are rumored to have backwards compatibility with older generation iPhone models, the so-called iPhone 17 series is said to fully utilize it by enjoying up to 50W wireless charging speeds.

Apple’s New MagSafe Chargers Spotted on Certification Website

A couple of new MagSafe chargers were listed on Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) website with model numbers A3502 and A3503. As per the listing, these look visually identical to the existing MagSafe chargers but possibly with improvements. The only specification difference between the two models is the cable length of the braided cable, with A3502 and A3503 featuring one metre and two metre long cables, respectively.

Qi2.2 Wireless Charging Standard: What It Means for iPhone 17

Regulatory filing reports indicate that the new MagSafe chargers would be compatible with the next-generation Qi2.2 wireless charging protocol. It will reportedly be announced by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) in the near future. As a result, they could provide wireless charging at speeds of up to 50W on the iPhone 17 lineup. The listing indicates that they would be able to provide a maximum power output of 45W.

iPhone 16 vs iPhone 17 Wireless Charging Capabilities

Interestingly, Apple’s current MagSafe chargers support the Qi2 standard that reaches 15W at the highest. While the new iPhone 16 series supports wireless charging up to 25W with the 30W MagSafe charger, it does not support the new standard, which is Qi2.1.

    Backward Compatibility for Older iPhones

Although iPhone 17 series would gain most from it, even older iPhone users will not be left behind. According to the listing, it would be compatible with iPhone models ranging from the iPhone 16 to iPhone 11. Besides charging at higher speeds, the Qi2.2 standard is also reported to introduce magnetic alignment and efficiency-related improvements.
