The Indian Parliament has officially passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, marking a significant shift in the country’s digital gaming landscape. The bill, piloted by Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw, was cleared by the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, a day after the Lok Sabha approved it.
The new legislation imposes a blanket ban on all forms of real money games, putting an end to platforms where users deposit money in the hope of winning monetary rewards. This move comes in response to growing concerns over gambling-like practices, addiction risks, and financial exploitation linked to online money games.
In addition to banning such platforms, the bill also prohibits advertisements related to real money gaming. Banks and financial institutions are barred from processing or facilitating any payments connected to these games, effectively shutting down their financial ecosystem.

At the same time, the government aims to promote eSports and online social gaming through this regulatory framework. By distinguishing between casual skill-based digital games and money-driven gaming platforms, the bill ensures that India can nurture a healthy and safe online gaming culture.
The passage of the Online Gaming Bill 2025 marks a watershed moment for the industry. While the real money gaming sector faces a complete shutdown, opportunities are set to open up for eSports and social gaming platforms, aligning with India’s vision of building a responsible and thriving digital entertainment economy.
