Qualcomm has marked a major milestone in advanced semiconductor design with the successful tape-out of its 2nm chip, a development that sharply underscores India’s growing role in shaping next-generation global technology. Achieved through close collaboration with its engineering teams in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad, the breakthrough highlights the depth and maturity of India’s semiconductor design ecosystem.

The 2nm tape-out is among the most advanced achievements in chip engineering worldwide and reinforces Qualcomm’s long-standing commitment to India as a core pillar of its global operations. With its largest engineering workforce outside the United States based in India, Qualcomm has steadily expanded India’s role from a support function to a critical innovation hub spanning wireless, compute, artificial intelligence, and system-level design.

The milestone was recently showcased at Qualcomm’s Bengaluru facility during a visit by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, reflecting the alignment between industry progress and the Indian government’s push to strengthen domestic semiconductor capabilities. Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and IT noted that sustained industry investment in advanced R&D is vital to building long-term semiconductor capacity and nurturing indigenous design talent.

Qualcomm’s India teams contribute across the semiconductor lifecycle, from design implementation and validation to AI optimisation and system integration, supporting platforms and products used globally. According to company executives, this level of involvement requires world-class engineering talent and close coordination with global architecture and program teams.

With over two decades of continuous investment, Qualcomm’s presence in India now plays a decisive role in how next-generation technologies are conceived and delivered worldwide. The 2nm achievement not only reinforces India’s position in the global semiconductor value chain but also signals the country’s readiness to compete at the cutting edge of chip innovation, building in India for the world.
