Snapchat Unveils Fifth-Generation AR Spectacles with Major Upgrades

Snap

At the Snap Partner Summit 2024, Snapchat introduced its fifth-generation Spectacles, equipped with augmented reality (AR) features and significant improvements over the previous version. These new Spectacles boast enhanced AR displays, dual Snapdragon processors, and better battery life, offering a more immersive experience. Alongside this launch, Snapchat also rolled out new AI-driven features, such as creative AI captions, a fresh Lens, and expanded capabilities for its AI chatbot, My AI.

Availability and Pricing

While the fifth-generation Spectacles aren’t available for general consumers yet, developers can access them through Snapchat’s Spectacles Developer Program. The program costs $99 per month (approximately ₹8,000), giving developers early access to cutting-edge AR glasses.

Key Features and Specifications

The new Spectacles are packed with innovative technology, including Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) micro-projectors, capable of displaying vibrant AR visuals both indoors and outdoors—even under direct sunlight. Powered by Qualcomm’s dual Snapdragon processors, the glasses promise efficient performance by distributing computing tasks, which not only reduces power consumption but also helps in better heat management.

These Spectacles can be paired with smartphones using the Spectacles app, available on the App Store. The app allows users to set up and control the glasses, adjust settings like brightness and volume, and download or view captured content. One notable improvement is the battery life, which now extends to 45 minutes—an upgrade from the 30-minute battery life of earlier models. The glasses charge via a bundled USB Type-C cable, making them convenient to power up on the go. Design-wise, the new Spectacles feature a slightly bulkier frame than their fourth-generation counterparts, adding durability without compromising style.

AR Capabilities and AI Integration

Running on Snap OS, the Spectacles support intuitive hand gestures and voice commands, enhancing their AR functionality. Snapchat has partnered with OpenAI to give developers access to advanced multimodal large language models (LLMs), enabling them to create more dynamic and interactive Lenses? With the upgraded Lens Studio 5.0, developers can now seamlessly move projects to the Spectacles, streamlining the creative process.

Snapchat’s fifth-generation Spectacles mark a significant leap in AR technology, with improved visuals, better performance, and extended battery life. Though not yet available for consumers, developers can explore the full potential of these glasses through Snapchat’s developer program. As AR and AI continue to merge, these Spectacles represent a promising step towards more immersive and interactive digital experiences.
