WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature for its Android app that will give users more control over group chat notifications. According to trusted WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the messaging platform is working on an option that allows users to mute @everyone mentions in group conversations.
What Is the ‘Mute Everyone Mentions’ Feature?
Currently, the @everyone mentions lets a participant tag all members in a group at once, generating a notification for everyone even if the chat is muted. While useful in some cases, the feature can quickly become disruptive if overused. To address this, WhatsApp is introducing a “Mute @everyone” toggle within notification settings.
This option will appear just under the mute settings in WhatsApp for Android. By default, it will be turned off, but users can enable it manually to silence these bulk mentions.
Where Was the Feature Spotted?
The upcoming update was found in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.27.1, though it is not yet active even for beta testers. The option was listed as part of a compatible update, suggesting that it may soon roll out to a limited group of users for testing.

Why Is WhatsApp Adding This Option?
The decision to test this feature stems from concerns that @everyone mentions could be misused, spamming group members with unnecessary notifications. With the mute option, users will have the flexibility to:
- Silence notifications triggered by @everyone mentions when muted.
- Retain control by enabling notifications if they still wish to see them.
This creates a balance between group-wide communication and personalized notification control, making group chats less overwhelming.
When Will It Roll Out?
As of now, the feature is still in development and not available to public testers. WABetaInfo suggests it may be released for beta testing in the coming weeks, with a broader rollout expected in a future WhatsApp update.
