Final Verdict
The DW-5000R isn’t trying to be the smartest G-SHOCK on the block, it’s trying to be the coolest. And it nails that ambition effortlessly. For longtime G-SHOCK fans, this watch is a must-own collector’s item. It offers a nostalgic ride with a few well-placed detours into modern territory. But even if you’re not deep into horological history, there’s plenty to love here - design, durability, and dependable performance at a reasonable price of ₹14,995.
The Good
- Impressive 5-year battery life
- Authentic, retro-inspired design
The Bad
- Lacks advanced features like Bluetooth or solar power
- It may feel basic for users expecting high-tech specs
In 1983, Casio changed the landscape of wristwatches with the launch of the original G-SHOCK DW-5000C, a shock-resistant marvel that combined utilitarian toughness with futuristic design. Fast-forward four decades, and the legacy continues with the newly launched DW-5000R, a reimagined version of the original icon. With a perfect blend of retro charm and contemporary functionality, the DW-5000R is more than just a homage.
Design

Casio could’ve gone flashy. Instead, they went faithful and it works. The DW-5000R stays remarkably true to the original 1983 DW-5000C’s aesthetic, featuring the same octagonal face, classic black resin construction, and unmistakable red, yellow, and blue accents. That nostalgic brick-pattern backdrop on the dial? It’s back in all its pixelated glory.
What elevates this version is the attention to heritage. Manufactured at Casio’s mother factory in Yamagata, Japan. Yes, the same facility that produced the original DW-5000R. The watch proudly features “JAPAN” on the dial, a small but significant detail that vintage G-SHOCK fans will appreciate.
The stainless-steel inner case and screw-down case back are direct nods to the original’s toughness, while the outer shroud and band are now made of bio-based resin, lending a modern, eco-conscious touch without compromising durability.
And while most new G-SHOCKs flaunt raised bezels for added shock resistance, the DW-5000R sticks to a flatter design, keeping the visual symmetry of the original intact. It may sacrifice a sliver of protection, but it gains plenty in aesthetic payoff.
Fit

At 42.3mm in diameter and weighing in at 76 grams, the DW-5000R has gained a little girth compared to its predecessor, which came in at 41.6mm and 64 grams. While this might seem like a minor jump, the extra heft is noticeable, but not overwhelming. It feels substantial on the wrist, just as a G-SHOCK should. The band is narrower than the original (16mm instead of 18mm), which might not please purists looking to retrofit their vintage models, but for everyday wear, the DW-5000R finds a sweet spot between retro bulk and modern comfort.

Specs & Features
While the DW-5000R looks like it time-travelled from the ’80s, it comes loaded with modern under-the-hood upgrades. The LED backlight is a noticeable step up, bright, efficient, and far superior to the faint illumination of the original. Casio promises five years of juice from a single CR2016 battery, a notable leap from the original’s two-year expectancy. Of course, that lifespan varies depending on how often you hit that light button, but for casual wear, it’s impressive.
- Other functional staples include:
Calendar support till 2099
Stopwatch with split timing and lap memory
Countdown timer (1 second to 24 hours)
Alarm functions with audible beeps and chimes
12/24-hour format switching
It also boasts 20 bar (200 meters) of water resistance, the same rating as the original, but now explicitly printed as “20 bar” on the face. It’s a minor visual update that differentiates this model from its predecessor. There’s no Bluetooth, solar charging, or Multiband 6 atomic timekeeping. And that’s kind of the point. This is a tribute piece, not a tech-forward timepiece.
