A Legacy of Innovation Meets Modern Exploration
Seiko continues to push the boundaries of professional dive watchmaking with the launch of its latest Prospex Marinemaster models, developed in collaboration with Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology. The new releases celebrate decades of innovation, precision engineering, and a shared commitment to ocean exploration.
Seiko’s journey in diver’s watchmaking dates back to 1965, when it introduced Japan’s first diver’s watch famously used during the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition between 1966 and 1969. This milestone was followed by the launch of Japan’s first 300-meter water-resistant diver’s watch in 1968. Since then, Seiko has continuously evolved its technology and design, earning global trust among professional divers and watch enthusiasts.
A Partnership Rooted in Deep-Sea Discovery
Seiko’s long-standing collaboration with JAMSTEC began in the 1980s, reinforcing its commitment to marine research and innovation. A key milestone came in 1983, when two 600-meter professional diver’s watches were successfully tested aboard the SHINKAI 2000, a manned submersible operated by JAMSTEC.
Today, JAMSTEC remains at the forefront of marine science, including its Arctic Research Program. The upcoming launch of Mirai II, Japan’s first icebreaking research vessel, marks a new chapter in data collection within ice-covered seas further aligning with Seiko’s spirit of exploration.
Two New Prospex Marinemaster Models
Inspired by this shared vision, Seiko introduces two new additions to its flagship Marinemaster lineup:
- A JAMSTEC collaboration limited model
- A continuous production black-dial model
Both watches are powered by Seiko’s advanced Caliber 8L45 automatic movement, representing the pinnacle of its 300m diver’s watch engineering.
JAMSTEC Collaboration Model: Inspired by Arctic Exploration
The collaboration edition stands out with a striking textured dial that reflects the path carved by an icebreaker through frozen seas. Its vertically graded blue dial deepens toward the center, symbolizing the vast, crystalline depths of the Arctic Ocean.
A thick transparent coating enhances the dial’s depth, while the polished finish adds a premium aesthetic. The blue ceramic bezel not only complements the design but also delivers superior scratch resistance ideal for extreme environments.
Black Dial Model: A Modern Take on a Classic Design
The second model pays tribute to Seiko’s iconic 1968 diver’s watch design. Featuring a deep black dial with a fine-grain texture, it minimizes light reflection for optimal underwater visibility.
The beveled indexes are engineered to catch light from multiple angles, ensuring maximum legibility, an essential feature for professional diving conditions.
Advanced Engineering and Comfort
Both models incorporate an upgraded clasp system that allows micro-adjustments of up to 16mm in 2mm increments, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit even during extended wear.
While the exterior design retains the signature silhouette of the 1968 model—including the screw-down crown at 4 o’clock the internal mechanics reflect cutting-edge innovation.
The Caliber 8L45 movement features:
- A 72-hour power reserve
- Precision accuracy of +10 to -5 seconds per day
- Components crafted from Spron, Seiko’s proprietary alloy for enhanced durability
Additionally, the crown is engineered with a separate locking component within the case, improving durability and ease of maintenance.
A New Chapter in Dive Watch Excellence
With the latest Prospex Marinemaster collection, Seiko reinforces its legacy of precision, durability, and innovation. The collaboration with JAMSTEC not only highlights the brand’s technical expertise but also its enduring commitment to supporting scientific exploration beneath the ocean’s surface.
